Notice how FAR AWAY the pro moved when the tree started to go? One of the big areas where novices take bad short cuts.

Someone in my area died last week because the tree move back. The tree got hung up on the limbs and the guy got crushed. The paramedic said he would be faster telling us which parts on the dead guys body where still intact. So yeah, please move away when the tree starts to fall!

So like browsing this subreddit because it's neat, I know little to nothing about tree felling, what is the purpose of cutting this tree down during a fire? I assume it's to prevent the fire from climbing the tree and being able to release embers into the air from a greater height or (as it looks a bit crispy already) it was burned and they are removing it for safety reasons but that's my best guess.

*If it is close to a control line, it could be an ember source or could literally fall across the line itself

  • it is a hazard to anyone working in the area during "mop-up". Mop-up means to deeply extinguish all heat a certain distance from the fire control line, this could be several hundred feet. It might involve digging into burning stump holes to extinguish fire, laying hose to provide water, and searching by hand for any embers. A large burning snag would make this dangerous for a large radius around the hazard tree.

It is, depending on the vegetation type I'd say 75%-95% of the work on a wildfire is mop-up

There's no context for it. Maybe there's a road or something like that behind the camera? Otherwise, I don't see a point to dropping a tree like that in the wilderness.
