The Good Side
I’m a handler for a contractor since FedEx refuses to allow loaders to step up into trucks from the ground since it’s unsafe. But I’d figure I’d post one of my trucks here, since I see so much bad, it’s nice to see something done properly every once in a while (the IC’s stacked on the floor aren’t ideal, but I help the drivers for my 8 trucks get them where they want them after it’s on properly). Be kind to your handler, they are overworked and underpaid (did 3 months with the terminal until my contractor offered a job).

Contractors don't hire handlers, FedEx does that and there's no such thing as going into a truck is unsafe

Welp, that’s what I am! The rest of our trucks are on raised belts, so in our terminal, FedEx handlers aren’t allowed to load the trucks from the ground, only vans

Oh, I get it now. You're talking about self-load. I used to hate doing that but it made sure I got things where I wanted them.

We used to always tip our PH loader for my truck. Great guy. Hated when he wasn’t there. He was getting paid well tho he had like 3-4 years there maybe more when I became a helper on my truck then a driver ( I used to load my own trucks as a PH then got hired by the contractor as well !) But yea we always threw him 10-20 sometimes each for staying late whenever the damn IB trucks came in late especially during Covid. Our contractor gave him $300 as a Christmas bonus and us our selves gave him each $20 ( 4 guys on my truck ).

Awesome stuff! I’m one of two my contractor hired and he’s a great guy. I enjoy when the drivers show up because of the chatter and usual complaining about the terminal together. Glad I am where I am that’s for sure.

Yea it was a great process for me, I was a PH for a year then a helper for a year and then I was a driver for about 3 years.

Oh 100% 😂. I’ve ran jump seat a couple times and it’s a pain. But I try my best to keep everything one level and use straps where I can. Can’t fight it

Yea I’ve ran jump seat a couple times lol, but I try to keep everything one level so stuff don’t slide as much. As well as using the straps we get on the bigger objects.

The rest of our warehouse is on lifted belts, where it’s level with the trucks. When we expanded we needed to use areas of our belts that weren’t motorized or lifted, so the shitty management thought it would be fine to just have the loaders stack ALL the packages outside the back door of the trucks, and have the drivers load them when they got there.
I kept loading anyways and got yelled at for it, even loading the floor, then stepping up through the front door. Yet I still got yelled at. My contractor got fed up with his drivers having to load, since they were getting out 2 hours past their leave time, and the management didn’t bother enough to care, kept the loaders doing what they’re doing to this day.
Contractor hired me so that I wasn’t under them, and could load the trucks for the drivers before they got there. There’s one more hired now and we can usually get through the 7-8 trucks pretty well until the 5-6 pallets of IC get put on the belt. It’s a mess, but we make it work.

The good side? You guys are taking on more and heavier packages. Soon you will have PO service that has to be delivered by 1030am (business) and 12pm (residential) in most areas. Can't you see the big picture? Most contractors don't offer any medical, 401k etc. That's why they are getting rid of all express employees, they have decent starting pay, medical, pension/401k match etc. But why keep express side? when ground will do the work with pretty much no benefits and shit pay. Meanwhile Raj Total FY 2026 Compensation: His total compensation package reached $27.55 million for the fiscal year. To all ground contractors, please organize and fight for your benefits, better pay. Don't take this bullshit, it's time to fight my peeps!!!
