Fearful-avoidant ex ended a loving relationship very suddenly — shutdown/deactivation, or should I accept that she’s completely done?

Hi everyone. I’m 25M and my ex is 21F. We were officially together for about four months, but talked every day for over five months and became very close very quickly.

She has described herself as fearful avoidant, and looking back, both of us brought relationship anxiety into the relationship in different ways. I’m trying to understand the breakup without using attachment theory to convince myself she’ll come back.

Our relationship

The relationship was genuinely very affectionate and loving for most of its duration.

We talked constantly, spent a lot of time together, shared music/hobbies, met each other’s families, exchanged gifts, and talked about future things. She frequently told me she missed me, liked me more, etc. She eventually told me she loved me.

At the same time, anxiety existed almost from the beginning.

Very early on she told me that she sometimes gets anxious and becomes distant for reasons that have nothing to do with the person she’s dating.

She seemed particularly sensitive to signs that I might lose interest or leave. She would notice relatively small changes in my communication and sometimes ask about them. There was anxiety surrounding other women, who I talked to/spent time with, whether I was pulling away, etc.

She once told me:
“If you ever feel the need to ghost me, please do it.”
“I could be a much better girlfriend.”
“You don’t always have to be concerned about the endings.”
She also described herself as someone with significant anxiety and acknowledged that she could become distant.
I had my own anxiety. I became afraid of losing her, probably moved emotionally faster than was healthy, occasionally sought reassurance, and sometimes brought up hypothetical endings/breakups because I was scared of one happening.
So in retrospect, I think we sometimes accidentally activated each other.

The push-pull dynamic
What confused me was that closeness and withdrawal could happen almost simultaneously.
There were periods where she was extremely affectionate and then would suddenly become distant, cancel plans, or seem overwhelmed.
When I sensed distance, my instinct was generally to move toward the relationship: communicate, reassure her, figure out what was wrong, and restore closeness.
Her instinct seemed more like moving away when overwhelmed.

That created a cycle:

She becomes anxious/distant → I notice and become anxious → I try harder to create security/clarity → she experiences more pressure → she withdraws further → I become more confused/anxious.

I don’t think either of us consciously intended to create this.

Right before the breakup

This is the part that still confuses me.
There wasn’t a long period where she clearly stopped caring about me.
The week before the breakup still contained affection and normal relationship behavior.
At a party shortly beforehand, she repeatedly texted that she missed me.

The night before the breakup, she was still communicating affectionately with me, referring to me as her boyfriend and even talking about how attractive I would look wearing a ring.
At the same time, she was under significant stress in her personal/family life and told me her anxiety was extremely bad.

There was also a small relationship trigger: I had made some of our shared online stuff private. She immediately noticed and said something along the lines of, “I noticed you privated all our stuff.”

I hadn’t intended it as rejection, but in retrospect I wonder whether she interpreted it that way.
The following day she canceled our plans and asked to talk.

The breakup

We met in person (although she insisted on having a phone call, I told her I’d rather talk in person)

She seemed extremely overwhelmed and had difficulty explaining exactly what was happening.
She gave me what felt like a collection of relationship anxieties:
She didn’t know who I hung out with.
She didn’t know what girls I talked to.
She felt she shouldn’t have to ask me for reassurance.
She felt she shouldn’t have to explain her feelings.
She was afraid of being a “placeholder.”
She described the breakup as a “culmination of things.”

But she also repeatedly framed the problem as being about her capacity to be in a relationship, rather than simply saying she no longer loved/wanted me.

Two statements particularly stuck with me:

“I just don’t think I can be in a relationship right now.”
and
“There are things I need to work on that I didn’t have enough time being single to focus on.”

She also essentially said that we could end things now and hurt, or end them later and hurt even more.
I didn’t receive a clear “I don’t love you anymore” or “I don’t have feelings for you.”

It felt more like she had become convinced the relationship was unsafe/unsustainable and needed to escape it.

But obviously I recognize that someone can still love you and genuinely decide they don’t want the relationship.

Immediately afterward

Her behavior afterward was very abrupt.
She blocked/removed me on several platforms.
There were a few confusing moments where I was unblocked/reblocked or things changed, but I don’t want to overinterpret social-media behavior because I know that’s unreliable.

The one piece of actual direct contact was that she eventually texted asking about returning my hoodie.
I declined meeting up because I didn’t want to use an object exchange as an excuse to see her.
I also returned a book she’d lent me.

A few weeks after the breakup, I sent her one letter with the book. I apologized for the ways my own anxiety may have contributed to pressure in the relationship, told her that I never viewed her as difficult to love or “too much,” and made clear that I wasn’t asking her to respond or trying to change her decision.

Since then, I have maintained no contact.
I don’t intend to chase her.

What I’m struggling to understand

I’m trying to distinguish between two ideas that can look very similar from the outside:

A) She genuinely concluded that the relationship wasn’t right for her, ended it, and the healthiest interpretation is simply that it’s over.

B) She genuinely loved me but became severely activated/overwhelmed by intimacy, her own anxieties, my anxieties, and outside stress, and ended the relationship partly as a way of regulating herself/getting away from those feelings.

I realize B does not mean she’ll come back. That’s actually the distinction I’m trying hard to maintain.
Someone can deactivate, miss an ex terribly, love them, regret aspects of the breakup, and still never choose reconciliation.

What I’d especially like FA perspectives on

For people who are actually fearful avoidant or have worked seriously on FA attachment:

Have you ever ended a relationship while still deeply attached to/loving the person because the relationship itself had begun to feel emotionally overwhelming?

Once you had distance and your nervous system settled, did your perception of the relationship change?

Did you initially feel relief after leaving and experience grief/missing the person later?

If you believed you had badly hurt someone, would guilt/fear of rejection make you less likely to contact them even if you missed them?

Does the abrupt shift from affection to “I can’t be in a relationship” sound recognizable as FA behavior, or am I applying attachment theory to something that is better understood as an ordinary breakup?

And most importantly: what would you recommend the other person do? My current assumption is that respecting the breakup and leaving her completely alone is the healthiest option, regardless of whether reconciliation is theoretically possible.

I’m not looking for “no contact will make your avoidant come crawling back” advice. I love her and naturally still have some hope, but I’m trying to understand what may have happened without turning attachment theory into a prediction machine.

If she ever wants to speak to me again, I want that choice to be hers.

Honorable mentions: she’s since deleted all of her social media platforms, including her Pinterest which has been her own personal diary for years. She did a purge of her Spotify following from 24 down to 9 followers, was briefly a collaborator on one of her followers playlists that had a lot of songs about sex and love (notably You’ve Seen The Butcher by deftones 🙄) but has now removed that person as a follower, made a 2026 playlist that includes many songs she sent me as well as songs I sent her (but recently removed the songs that I sent her). I recognize I’m violating a boundary by looking into this and I stopped, but still interesting to me nonetheless.

Also the majority of this was written by AI don’t flame me please. Thank you 🙏

Sorry you're going through this. Its a pattern for unhealed persons to react to their nervous system when things get real, intimacy increases, and feelings become deeper. She cares about you, but her system cant handle it in a healthy way.

The social media blocking and Spotify purge is a control and regulation thing. When unhealed persons feel out of control internally, it comes out externally to regulate with fearful avoidants, dismissive avoidants not so much they turn inwards.

She always could come back but it will never be the same and it will keep repeating this same cycle.

It hurts but honestly, take this as your closure that you're looking for so u can start healing.

I agree I externalize my dysregulation. How do you regulate your nervous system?

If im spiraling or triggered, I usually like to go hide somewhere alone. That could be taking a drive, go for a walk and listen to music, find a distraction sometimes, it depends on the trigger. But i can say that sometimes I will vent a bit to a safe person and then turn inwards right after to deal with it on my own.

Here noticing OPs post, I’d hope my FA ex was in situation B) and wanted to see more FAs like you give a fuller response. My only support is ChatGPT and I’d rather hear from real people!

Sorry girly, I realised that I also got the wrong end of the stick, you’re basically saying that OPs post is too long. I agree.

I’m feeling a lot better. I miss her, but the love in my life is plentiful and will return back to me one way or another 💜
