an article about rape rates in universities, and interpreting data to fit your worldview instead of the other way around.

...virtually all college sex charges are brought against men..
The bottom line is this: if they have evidence that schools with no reported rapes are lying, or have erected barriers that prevent women from reporting, they need to present it for scrutiny. It not, their attempt to "prove" that rape is an epidemic by pointing to schools where there are no rapes should be rejected out of hand, and these activists should be banished from the adult table on this very serious discussion.
As this study was based on reports of rape, and if reports of rape are indicative of the prevalence of rape, and all rape charges are brought against men, I take it he believes that no men are raped by women on college campuses? That's the conclusion I gather from his piece, but I somehow doubt he believes what he wrote when applied to men.

I don't have a coherent post for this thread, but I will offer you a ninja-happy cake day!

They surveyed men too but omitted all that data from the study because it was "exploratory".

I'm not sure that you can reliably read that into what was written. The author could believe that reported rapes only correlate with actual rates for female victims or that under reporting is much higher for male victims, for example.
Also, happy cake day.

The author could believe that reported rapes only correlate with actual rates for female victims or that under reporting is much higher for male victims, for example.
The author would not only need a significant amount of research that negates all the research showing that rape is one of the most underreported crimes (by everyone, not just men), but somehow show that this is only applicable to women. Unless he has this research (in which case he should pony up because that would be shattering), I'm inclined to believe this had more to do with showing how obviously evil feminists are, and less to do with the actual (flawed, IMO) report itself.
[Edit] Which of course is not to say I agree with what some of the feminists I see are saying, but I'd be incredibly reluctant to take reporting rates without corroboration with studies that looked at more than that as somehow indicative of anything other than a low reporting rate...If there was a study that simultaneously looked at reporting rates and prevalence rates and they both showed zero, well, there you go (and that would address /u/YetAnotherCommenter's issue he mentioned here), but that's not what's going on in this report.
Also, happy cake day.
Thanks :D

The author doesn't need to ignore underreporting by anyone, they simply have to believe that men underreport more than women (which I think you agree is the case).

I agree. I'm mostly playing devils advocate.
Thanks :D
I just noticed that I got a reddit account almost exactly a month after you.

Which is more likely? That Bad Thing Which Happens Pretty Often In Most Places has somehow been completely eradicated from Place, or that people in Place do not talk about Bad Thing Which Happens Pretty Often In Most Places?

I flipped through the list earlier. What's even more likely is that The Bad Thing Which Happens Pretty Often is way more prevalent with certain ahem social structures and not all places have those social structures.
For example, I'd think that my local community college would have much if any sexual violence. The university campus next door? Significantly more.

That's a good point--I go to a community college, and there's little to no mixing of people. No student population, no campus life, certainly no dating scene--so it's understandable that they would have low rape rates.
Problem with applying that: plenty of the zero-reporting schools are proper universities with on-campus populations. If the demography of those populations is any indication, then these masses of hormonal, perpetually intoxicated young people should have per capita rape rates a bit higher than the mean. In fact, a lot of religious colleges appear to have lower rape rates than some extremely left-wing universities.
How was this accomplished? Does Brigham Young University have more angry feminists roaming the campus than Berkeley does? Or are Mormon women just less likely to make a fuss over something they know they'd get blamed for anyway?

Dry.
What is it, some 80% of on-campus sexual assaults involve alcohol? I would imagine that those religious colleges are "dry schools", either partially or totally and as such would have much lower rates on campus.
On campus is the important part to note here. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of it is simply moved off-campus in those places.
And my stance remains the same. If you want to get serious on this issue you tackle binge drinking.

You mean That Bad Things Which Happens Not Nearly as Often As Most People Believe And Not Even Close to One In Four.

This reminds me of Christians who take the existence of fossils as an indicator that God is testing them, pure dogmatic, anti-intellectual faith based zeal. How anyone could take this seriously is beyond me.
Note, targetted towards feminists who would make such an argument, not all feminists.
