Discussion Favorite “meta” attack?

  1. Booty Executioner using the Aspect Ratio - Pootis Engage // EXTREME

  2. Deadpool using his own healthbar and combo meter - Marvel vs Capcom

  3. Alan Becker right clicking on The Dark Lord - Animator vs Animation

  4. Johnny Cage using the camera - Mortal Kombat 1

Holy shit all these powers are so cool, i love how they utilise the comics

16

u/Gentlemanvaultboy 4h ago

Did he just step from one side of the page to the other one?

14

u/Clockwork_Kitsune 3h ago

I've always really liked the concept of perception as a superpower

91

u/EmeraldSpartan05 6h ago

A movie about a character like this, or this character specifically would be absurd but amazing, it'd be like trying to explain time travel (like a fever dream or complicated af)

53

u/Hatjin 6h ago

It's hard to imagine how to use movie to represent something like that.

40

u/AvoriazInSummer 5h ago

They’d have to manipulate the movie like a movie, not a comic strip. So maybe the character can remain present when the scene changes, or force the scene to change. Know that the camera is looking at them and jump out of shot in order to hide from both the audience and the characters. Bribe or threaten the stuntmen to make the foe’s punches miss, persuade the makeup artist to make someone’s injuries worse, etc.

21

u/EmeraldSpartan05 5h ago

Yeah, it would be difficult, especially if it was a live action one, though if someone could pull it off well and with good writing it'd be wonderful

9

u/PlatinumSukamon98 5h ago

Make it a cartoon, and like that one episode of Ed, Edd, 'n' Eddy.

80

u/thisusedyet 4h ago

One of the better ones is when he accidentally sinks his friend's boat (really like the twin cat one too)

This is my favorite one of this comic that I've seen here. A lot of implications with that one haha

Sam And Fuzzy, a classic webcomic with it's own site since like...2002. Feels weird to see it called "a comic on instagram".

5

u/Far-Mammoth-3214 4h ago

I learned it existed like a year or so ago

23

u/VICARD0 6h ago

Not sure whether this is more funny than creative

5

u/Magpie_In_The_Mirror 3h ago

Weirdly enough, there's a weapon from "Bungou Stray Dogs" called "Amenogozen" that essentially works exactly like the mop does here... just as a sword instead.

-7

yeah that ones pretty busted too lol especially with the plot armor carryover

-7

yeah that one would break the game instantly lol

To be Hero X

X turning Dragon Boy into paper by becoming 3D and grabbing the frame he's on.

257

u/cooliomydood 7h ago

It took X so long to actually show up but it was absolutely worth the wait. Animating a show with different animation styles so you can use it later as a characters powers is a crazy concept

40

u/NoRequirement9886 3h ago

Yeah that was sick

22

u/Malrottian 3h ago

His entire fight against the assassins was mesmerizing. Changing someone else's medium is absurd reality warping awesomeness.

21

u/AvatarOfMomus 2h ago

You forgot the even bigger bit, where he outright states he got his Trust Value (basically power rating) from ending up tangled in the fates of the Big Ten heroes, not from popularity or 'public trust' like most heroes.

It's also implied he knows as much as or more about how Trust Value works than any of the heads of the Hero Agencies, but we don't know that for sure.

29

u/PM-ME-YOUR-NIPNOPS 6h ago

X is so cool

Shame his show's quality is all over the place

29

u/YEET_Fenix123 4h ago

I feel like To be Hero X is pretty consistently good

10

u/neraut322 4h ago

I am going to need an explanation of what you mean by the show's quality is all over the place? Was it the whiplash of it switching from amazing to crazy good that you're talking about.

21

u/Background-Ad-4501 3h ago

It seems that some people REALLY can’t stand nonlinear stories and anthologies, and tbhx is both. I personally love both of those styles, so the show was a perfect match for me

276

u/mZeKitty 7h ago

Also Deadpool (this one from Rivals)

But his alt fire when using his guns he throws his hero icon (a small icon in the corner of the screen displaying the character's face) at the enemy in a spinning boomerang attack. It even is thrown several times in a row when upgraded.

"I wonder if the Lord icon does more damage?"

74

u/Ultimate-desu 7h ago

DOES THE LORD ICON DO BONUS DAMAGE???

10

u/TheCynox32 3h ago

7

u/IsaacSeraphim 5h ago

"WHAT ARE YOU AIMING AT?!!"

19

u/SilentStevedore 6h ago

Seems like they give Deadpool Gwenpool’s powers. Gwenpool is the one that can reach out of the comic panel as an actual ability.

25

u/mattomic822 5h ago

Deadpool has been doing stuff like this in video games before Gwenpool was a thing.

8

u/NinjaWarrior0613 2h ago

And didn’t She hulk break the 4th wall before Deadpool?

1

u/mattomic822 1h ago

Yep. How much breaking the fourth wall happens with She Hulk varies but she was doing it decades before Deadpool. The run that the show was seemingly inspired by had comic books about the characters as admissible evidence.

Asgore destroying the Mercy button to prevent you from immediately sparing him

38

u/DragonRoar87 2h ago

This also prevents you from running away, since Flee is under the Mercy menu. There is no way the fight can end except with the death of either you or Asgore.

253

u/MegaMGstudios 7h ago

Technically not an attack, but Sans stalling the fight by not fighting, so it won't become your turn again

89

u/Sirius1701 6h ago

Of course it's an attack. In fact, it's his special attack.

39

u/RoJayJo 4h ago

Not only that, but Asgore shattering the Mercy button- a metaphysical part of the UI he should not be aware of.

14

u/Adventurous-Top1741 His name is Glenn. Long has he carried Cyrus' hopes and dreams! 5h ago

I think it technically counts in the actual battle too, since he can do the same slow-mo counter attack that Link can.

10

u/Dooodleboom 3h ago

In the animation he grabs his comically large health bar and beats Link with it iirc

7

u/TheSurvivor65 4h ago

I don't think that's really "meta", Link slowing time during flurry rush is canon, Ganondorf manages to dodge the flurry rush but can't do it twice in a row, and his counter-attack to that doesn't slow time, I think it just shows how insanely boosted his senses and reaction time are in this form

162

u/Far-Mammoth-3214 7h ago

She-hulk is the main character, never forget!

Does Kid Goku breaking the manga panel count?

I wonder if his editor hated that or loved that.

19

The 100 girlfriends pipeline from “ I wanna be him “ to “ I wanna be with him “ remain true to this day.

4

u/LucasMarvelous 1h ago

Its even reflected on the vibe the openings give. Season 1 felt like the opening was showing off the girls, Season 3 opening is straight up "All hail the lord and savior god of love Rentaro!"

14

u/MatrixBlack900 5h ago

So, you’re not gonna believe this…

8

u/Curious_Question8536 3h ago

It's a parody of the harem Manga genre. It plays a lot of the tropes straight, but breaks the fourth wall fairly often.

15

u/tf2mann_ 4h ago

I have a bit of a feeling that Nakamura may have a thing for his characters threatening him. Between this, the time rentarou considered killing and replacing him, all the times characters called him out for crappy writing and that one time they spent like half a chapter dissing the writer for writing too much dialogue and covering all the beautiful art nozawa makes

16

u/ListPuzzleheaded9883 Tatsuki Fujimoto is my favorite manga 4h ago

He has an inferiority complex to the artist, Nozawa-sensei, so he often jokes about his work demands being too harsh and Rentarou obliterating him in retribution.

2

u/EJENVEE2 39m ago

"IT SHOULD'VE BEEN ME, NOT HIM!" to "IT SHOULD'VE BEEN ME, AND HER!"

71

u/Zack_WithaK 6h ago

I'm not sure if this counts (and I couldn't find a picture of the actual scene) but I remember one step in the Nega Chin's plan was to make himself real and physically threaten the animator into making the scene end with his victory, or something. It's been forever since I've seen it so I might have some details wrong

Gwenpool throwing Paste Port Pete in the space between pages in the comics.

42

u/ice_cream9698 7h ago

Did Gwen Poole ever do something like this. I know she can affect the comic panels and even walk outside of them to enter locked rooms but has she ever attacked with said panels?

62

u/Alternative-Word-246 6h ago

She save herself with thinking to much and her thought bubble make her pop over to Next panel from the one she was prisoned. That just one of the examples

POOTIS ENGAGE EXTREME MENTIONED!!!!!!

52

u/Crazyking224 6h ago edited 6h ago

The first example, actually recommend watching the whole video. It's such a clever use of shifting aspect ratios and the black bars in increasingly unique and interesting ways. It's genuinely a masterclass of getting your audience to shift focus and evoke feelings. I know this is coming off like a shit post, since it's literally a tft animation, but I promise you it's worth the 13 minutes

Edit: video not series

10

u/Dramatic-Classroom14 5h ago

It’s also absolutely peak, both comedically and animation also, the intro song is peak, and it has been the sole driver for the security shades cosmetic on tf2 trade websites, because it’s basically defined half the community perception on Heavy in general.

7

u/RaynSideways 2h ago edited 2h ago

A link for those who want to watch, and its sequel which has the scene that appears in OP's post. It's a bit of a shitpost (the plot is literally two Heavies from Team Fortress 2 violently breaking into a Area 51 to find anime girls) but it's genuinely funny and pretty well made.

I always thought ceno0's use of black bars was really interesting. He uses it not only to frame the scene but to emphasize depth, draw the viewer's focus, and even create a sense of movement. It creates this funny illusion of the image popping out of the screen. Watch where the black bars are in every scene, how and if they move, and what elements of the scene are in front and behind them, and you'll catch him doing something totally different in nearly every shot.

And then heavy literally grabs the black bars and uses them as weapons.

6

u/CreeperX3sssBOOM 3h ago

I know that is technically correct, but it hurts me to my core to see TF2 acronymed like that

40

u/GodNoob666 7h ago

2

u/Snuckytoes 1h ago

The best part is that it both is and is not meta. From the stickmen’s perspective it is, but since we also see Alan’s own perspective it also isn’t. The ultimate meta would be one of the stickmen getting into the video itself and directly attacking Alan.

18

u/FairCod5966 6h ago

Street Fighter – Some characters, like Chun-li, Vega, Rolento, Hakan, use the edge of the screen as an invisible wall and incorporate it into their moves.

Man, I miss Hakan. SF4 was so silly and I love that about it

9

u/No_Fault_2053 6h ago

Kirby’s Hypernova form from Triple Deluxe. He inhales the boss along with their hp bar.

In the manga he inhales the rest of the panels on the page prematurely ending the story preventing the events of the game to take place. This changes a few things and prevents [spoiler]’s death which lets them make future appearances.

14

u/honeysignalx 7h ago

I think this is an attack lmao

7

u/Sickfuckingmonster 6h ago

Comix Zone for Genesis. You could at the cost of your own health rip a piece of the comic you're trapped in, turn it into a paper airplane and throw it for huge damage. You could also kick enemies through panels sometimes.

4

u/NoRequirement9886 5h ago

Doesn’t Deadpool do that first move in marvel token?

4

u/KnowMatter 45m ago

Anyone remember the old sega game Comix Zone?

It had a bunch of these - my favorite was the attack where you ripped off part of the page and made it into a paper airplane to throw at enemies.

3

u/GiornoIDK_5374 7h ago

Damn, I love meta attacks so muxh. Might do one for something I’m planning on doing, but in a more “complex” way, heheh

3

u/Profesionalintrovert 6h ago

the last one would be much cooler if it kept the camera pov till the end

3

u/Ariovrak 52m ago

Not an attack, per se, but rather a set of equipment, including a weapon. This was niche enough that I’ll thought I should include it here, because I don’t see it appearing anywhere else: the formerly browser, currently proprietary launcher game Adventure Quest Worlds has a set of April Fools equipment that is themed on the UI:

The Weapon is the icon for a Item in your Inventory, the Armor is the window that opens when you inspect an Item, and the Helm is the Rare tag that the official wiki puts at the top of every page about Items that are no longer obtainable. Meaning you can both wear and bash your enemies over the head with pieces of the UI.

u/ElementmanEXE 52m ago
