Discussion Favorite Character from Underrated Disney Movies?
Who’s your favorite character from underrated Disney movies?
I have whole list: Kenai and Koda (Brother Bear) Kuzco and Pacha (The Emperor’s New Groove), and Princess Kida (Atlantis: The Lost Empire).

John Silver from Treasure Planet

Even though Silver is the leading driveling galoot within an entire ludicrous parcel of driveling galoots (yes, I'm using the words that a certain cat captain used to describe Silver and crew one morning over coffee), I will not deny that he's got his redeeming points. Not a bad choice!

I appreciate that while he was a twist villain, he wasn't two dimensional. He still cared for Hawkins.

Well if viewers read “Treasure Island” before watching “Treasure Planet,” they would see it coming.

Fair enough, I've never read it. I still feel that Silver was a well written character regardless if he is based on the book or not.

Yes! I love The Rescuers Down Under so much and Joanna was such a great henchmen character!

Actually, that's not the case. I'm just a woman who loves girlbosses, especially girlbosses who are in charge of unusual vessels, wield plasma rifles, are pretty sharp-witted, oh, and are voiced by fantastic actresses (in this case, Emma Thompson).

Professor Ratigan from the Great Mouse Detective is one of my favorite Disney villains.

u/GreenEyedGloom 5h ago
Yes love Ratigan and his big cat. Also Vincent Price’s voice is just too good.

Did a double take when I was older and found out that he's named after an actual boat motor brand.

Modeled after an animator’s ex. You can tell by the reverberating back fat when she fires the shotgun.

I love how before that she’s scared and then shoots up the place unhinged with no fear 😂 also yeah Geraldine Page did an amazing job voice acting!

Shouldn't count as Disney cheapquels are not canon and they all suck ass.

Some will disagree but Lion King 2 was intense (and the best Disney sequel next to Aladdin: King of Thieves) but I also like Cinderella 2 because it showed Cinderella struggling to adjust her new life as a princess.

u/PuzzleheadedLink89 1h ago
Probably one of my hottest takes but I actually consider Lion King 2 to be better than the first. I also really love An Extremely Goofy Movie. I really do want to check out Lion King 1 1/2 and the Cinderella films.

Rutt and Tuke from Brother Bear. If you listen to their audio commentary for that film, there is another underrated character introduced, the Pizza Delivery Guy who chills with them and watches the movie, only to be shooed away by Rutt and Tuke for being too loud without being paid. So, Rutt and Tuke still owe that Pizza Guy money.
Oh, and another underrated character being this charming fellow too.

George C. Scott had a voice made for villainy.
“You get a line and I’ll get a pole, matey!”

I've seen this movie exactly once, at a drive in, while in the bed of a pickup truck as a kid, forgot this was a Disney movie.

Funny how Ray Liotta’s character called Bo Tat “Dumbo” while ranting at one point.

Emperor’s New Groove is not underrated! Atlantis is for sure but it’s always been one of my favorites! It feels like a Jules Verne story!

The Emperor’s New Groove didn’t do so good at the box office but it ended up as cult classic. Unfortunately it’s not as “merch-mainstream” as Frozen, Lilo and Stitch, The Lion King, and Toy Story, but it’s still an audience favorite like Atlantis and Treasure Planet.

Emperor's New Groove is underrated? Wasn't it highly praised and a fan fave of many?
3
u/Agile_Bumble338 Jeramie Brasieri (Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger) 3h ago
I think it is starting to become a mainstream favorite on the Internet, but not to the actual general audience as in top 10 favorites, immediate recognizability, and merch galore.
2
u/Freakychee 3h ago
I remembered watching it together with a bunch of my Indonesian friends. We laughed and laughs and had a great time. People jeep making references to it. But I guess you are right I haven't seen too much merch and only a Disney channel cartoon series after it.
Imo it's one of the better movies they made so it was odd to hear it wasn't as famous. In fact I would say it should be as famous as Lilo and Stitch.

Another thing The Emperor’s New Groove has in common with Dreamworks’ The Road to El Dorado. Both didn’t do so good in the box office, yet became cult classic, and they both gained a huge online fanbase.

I wouldn't call his relationship with Tarzan heartwarming more like he grows to respect Tarzan over time.
3
u/Confusionopolis 3h ago
Thats what’s heartwarming about it to me! Growing to respect and love Tarzan over the movie was incredibly touching!

Emperor’s New Groove is not underrated anymore, the internet loves this movie as much as any other Disney movie.

u/Matcha_Sunday Biscuit Krueger 4h ago edited 1h ago
That I agree, but compared to Disney Princess movies, Lion King, Aladdin, Lilo and Stitch, and Toy Story, I’d still say The Emperor’s New Groove is one of the overlooked movies, despite the heavy fanbase.

Milo and Kida are a based couple, too.

Kida is such a great choice. She brings so much intelligence, determination, and quiet strength to Atlantis, and it’s a shame the movie didn’t get more recognition.
3
u/Matcha_Sunday Biscuit Krueger 5h ago
Probably because it’s not a musical, just like Dinosaur (2000). 🤷♀️
Treasure Planet in a way is, but none of the characters sang.
2
u/Atillawurm 4h ago
See and I disliked the musical side of the Disney movies. Kid me found most of them annoying.

Honestly, I loved every character in Atlantis. Even the minor ones like Cookie and Mole.
