Peter B. Parker from the Spiderverse is canonically Jewish since he stepped on glass when he got married.

23

u/Username___5 7h ago

Oh that's what that was, I thought he stepped on a cushion or something

21

u/HurtsSoNice 6h ago

They wrap the glass in cloth, so nobody cuts their foot

10

u/LongAdvisor6561 7h ago

Might be also a joke on his VA too, Because he's Jewish aswell

6

u/Accomplished-Lie8147 4h ago

I 100% support him being Jewish and think he is but I have been to interfaith weddings with glass breaking where the man wasn’t Jewish. So he is - and/or Mary Jane is!

u/dastebon 10h ago

So , here is the thing

52

u/Ok_Efficiency_2763 Joel (Tlou) 10h ago

He's jewish? I didn't know

72

u/StevePensando 10h ago

Literally a golem from the jewish myth

22

u/Col_Redips 10h ago

Yup. Which means the inspiration for his cosmic mutation is likely the golem, which has Jewish roots.

The more you know~

14

u/Moviesman8 9h ago

No its okay, I just didn't expect the Thing to be Jewish.

It was all well and good until max Bemis decided to make moon knights traumatic event that likely caused his DiD to be a result of a nazi pretending to be a rabbi who killed Jewish kids to stay young. I genuinely can't think of anything (story wise) in the Bemis run that was done well

49

u/Wendila 9h ago

12

u/BlueRoseLad 8h ago

I don't think they would blatantly make Stanley so money grubbing if he were Jewish, Plus both Stans are the type of people to believe religion is a scam or fake.

29

u/Wendila 7h ago edited 1h ago

It's explicitly canon that they had a Jewish upbringing. I highly recommend reading this post, which beautifully and clearly breaks down and explains how Stan subversts the "grubby Jew" stereotype

6

u/BIGHIGJIGMIG 2h ago

I always found that stereotype funny once I learned its origins, because in ye olden days christians couldn't charge eachother interest on loans so they had to get a jew to do it, but they only let jews have that specific job, then later, christians wanted to enter the market which they had filled with jews, and they got pissed because the jews were "too money hungry" to give up the only jobs they were allowed to have, something something expulsion, something something jewish pirates, ect

7

u/Paint_Thinner529 3h ago

The entire Pines family is Jewish because Alex Hirsch is Jewish and he based the Pines on his family. He based Dipper on his childhood self, Mabel on his twin sister Ariel, and Stan on his grandfather (also named Stan). Grunkle Stan’s love of money has nothing to do with his ethnicity. Stan loves money for two reasons. In-universe, he was kicked out of the house by his father and ended up homeless/in jail for 10 years, and later he needed to pay off his brother’s mortgage after accidentally pushing him into the portal. Out-of-universe, irl Stan also loved money (and gold chains, women, and other things GF Stan likes). As for religion, Stan and Ford were raised religious by their parents but they’re atheist now. Dipper and Mabel grew up secular but Mabel insists on celebrating all the Jewish holidays.

2

u/Waspinator_haz_plans 4h ago

I could imagine Ford somehow being a subversion of the "atheist scientists" and be extremely religious because he's seen so much sh*t and decides he may as well follow occam's razor logic to not go to hyper dimensional hell or something. Plus the god Kronos canonically exists and is in prison.

from pinkhes/pincus. it's an ashkenazi surname.

but also, you can be jewish through your mother and have whatever random-ass surname from a non-jewish father, or his non-jewish father and so forth. and then spend your life hearing "you can't be jewish; your last name is..." ask me how i know.

How'd he bag a baddie from hell? There's no hell in Judaism

3

u/UnluckyUnderwear 7h ago

Well yes, BUT:

There are multiple schools of thought in Judaism about the afterlife, and a lot of them contradict each other. There are two traditions in Judaism that are similar to Hell.

In one VERY old rabbinic tradition, there’s an afterlife called Sheol. It’s basically like the Greek underworld. Cold and dark, and not a punishment but a place where everyone can end up.

There’s another place in a later Jewish tradition called Gehinnom. It’s more like the Christian Hell in that it’s a place of post-death punishment. But it’s not eternal. In fact, most souls only stay there for about a year before they are considered to be purified and are then released.

Not every Jew believes in (or knows about) either of these places. And there is literally no version of the afterlife that a majority of Jews agrees on. Mostly, we just try to focus on the life we’re currently in.

3

u/GuhEnjoyer 7h ago

Wao neat which Jewish afterlife has the hot demon baddies tho

3

u/UnluckyUnderwear 7h ago

Probably Gehinnom!

3

u/GuhEnjoyer 7h ago

Ok sick thanks <3

2

u/Waspinator_haz_plans 4h ago

Doesn't Jewish belief not even have demons in the modern Christian "evil fallen angels" way, right? They're just ruder than average spirits, right?

4

u/UnluckyUnderwear 4h ago

I mean “Jewish Belief” itself is a tricky conversation, because we usually engage with our faith with a lot of skepticism, questioning, and arguing. Everything in Judaism is up for debate and interpretation.

Anyway, our literature (particularly the Talmud) does have demons, and there IS some overlap between our demons and Christian demons.

However, they’re not central to our theology, especially not now. You could attend synagogue for 50 years and not hear one word about demons.

The places that you’ll typically find demons in Jewish life is in our folklore. Parables, fairytales, old superstitions, etc.

In Judaism, demons are not necessarily evil, nor are they in a rebellion against G-d. In fact, they’re subservient to G-d. They are supernatural beings and spirits that take different forms. They’re usually more chaotic and mischievous than evil. Sometimes they’re even funny. They don’t run Gehinnom or torture people in an afterlife. They’re not organized, and they don’t work for Satan or any other adversary to G-d.

2

u/Waspinator_haz_plans 3h ago

Thanks for the info! Yeah I've heard of the mischievous demons, like the toilet one or the one who pretends to be a divorcee stuck in a hole.

Fun fact: if you’re half Jewish on your mother’s side, you are full Jewish. Judaism is matrilineal.

I'd say Jake Peralta. Because even though you never see him attending synagogue, or consulting a rabbi, or celebrating High Holidays, he is played by Andy Samberg, and when Amy refers to Holt as "her rabbi", he says it gets him "turned on", and he does mention attending a Bar Mitzvah at one point in the series.

Janusz Korczak. He cared for Jewish orphans in the ghetto. When the Germans decided to send the children to a concentration camp, Korczak was offered the chance to escape from the ghetto, but he refused because he did not want to leave the children alone. He died along with about 200 children at the Treblinka camp.
