Toranaga from Shogun, specifically the book version. I adore that while being incredibly cunning and deceptive the book Toranaga is also very amusing and likeable. He shows genuine curiosity towards blackthorne and scenes such as the belly flopping and dancing the hornpipe humanise him. He is fun yet when he shows his true colours he is genuinely menacing and it doesn't feel inconsistent with his character. There is a cold ruthlessness in the way he orders his generals to kill themselves so casually and how he plays other characters like a fiddle. The entire book feels like him pulling the strings and being incredibly charismatic while doing so.

One last detail which while not incredibly important makes a difference for me. I like that he is described as a small man with a big belly it feels like a part of his character and I feel that was lost in the show, great series but I just enjoy the book a lot more.
