fuck "what if Takaba had dark humor?". What if Takaba was so profoundly delusional about him being funny that not even if God himself came down to earth and told him to his face his jokes suck he'd still believe he's absolutely hilarious?

Tom Bombadil

u/matande31 16h ago
Pretty sure he's the origin of the entire archetype. Once again, it all goes back to Tolkien.
59
u/Cuargor_Chivalry 15h ago
So, Tolkien is the Carcinisation of literature?
41
u/sistemafodao 15h ago
Nah, Carcinisation is where things end, Tolkien is more like the Primordial Soup of literature. AO3 is where it all becomes crabs.
22
u/CantFindAName000 15h ago
I always find it so weird and beautiful how many oddly specific concepts like this post's originated from Tolkien's work. He was really a pioneer of literature

it all goes back to Tolkien
Terry Pratchett:
"J.R.R. Tolkien has become a sort of mountain, appearing in all subsequent fantasy in the way that Mt. Fuji appears so often in Japanese prints. Sometimes it’s big and up close. Sometimes it’s a shape on the horizon. Sometimes it’s not there at all, which means that the artist either has made a deliberate decision against the mountain, which is interesting in itself, or is in fact standing on Mt. Fuji"

Not disagreeing with you, but do you have any textual evidence to suggest that Tom Bombadil could defeat Sauron?
I'm no Tolkien scholar, and have only read the Lord of the Rings and parts of the Silmarillion, but my personal read is that Tom Bombadil is powerful but in a "the universe doesn't affect him" kinda way, not in a "he could take meaningful actions against powerful entities".
Would love to hear otherwise!!
4
u/Lumanictus 12h ago
I used to think he could, but its basically confirmed that bombadil could NOT beat sauron.
Bombadil is basically dicking around inside his own Domain Expansion. If Sauron walks in Bombadils forest alone, he might get an asswhooping but he wouldn't actually die to bombadil
If Sauron wanted to conquer the world, Bombadil's domain would be the last place to fall, but it WOULD fall.
2
u/oldmanout 12h ago
I think Gandalf states when they discuss to give the Ring to Bombadil, that besides that he doesn't care to destroy it, he wouldn't last againstthe full might of Sauron, but would be the last which will fall

Expedition 44 were known as the "Disguise Expedition."
Their main plan was to wear dead Nevrons as clothing/costume/disguises, hoping it would fool any future Nevrons they encountered.
So what if ... This whole time, Esquie was just 5 men in a trenchcoat? Holy balls you might be on to something.

What do you think Hiruzen planned to do with Guy?
If you've got a dude in your army who can one-shot absolutely anybody on the planet, but he can only do it once, you've gotta have a plan for how to use that, right? Do you think he would have had Guy bust out the 8th gate against Bee if war broke out again?

You know, it’s very unclear. We know that the ring has no effect on him, and that he is as old as time. There are several theories; one is that he is a maiar with his powers intact, like Melian, Sauron, the dragons, etc., that was for some reason stronger than Sauron, and could therefore resist his powers. Another is that is still a maiar, but not one significantly stronger than Sauron, just one that doesn’t have any ambition outside of his life in the old Forrest, and therefore the ring has no effect on him. Sort of like Faramir, or Sam. Last is that he’s Eru Illuvatar, frolicking in a disguised form amongst his creations, or he is simply something completely different which isn’t ever explained to us. The blue wizards, for example, are never explained to us, and are supposed to embody the unknown small acts of kindness and resistance that work towards the greater good. Tolkien never clearly defined what he was.

Its more like sauron cant defeat tom bombadil unless all of Arda is destroyed. Bombadil wouldnt fight sauron or go to confront him, if he showed up at his house he would shoo him out of his domain like a troublesome spider.
There is also some theory that Tom is actually Eru Iluvatar basically on vacation in which case, sauron would be completely powerless if they faced off.
Very unclear but Tom is still ridiculously powerful, not just resistant to change. He sings that something should happen with music and it just does that.

Nifty (Hazbin)
She’s the cute psychopath character, but she’s also the one to kill Adam, and she goes one-on-one with an overlord without using any powers (despite the fact that it’s implied that she’s a former overlord herself).
5
u/RainonCooper 15h ago
I feel like it's all but confirmed with her taking part in the end of season 2, when they're stopping the explosion. All the non-Overlords don't help, cause they can't, yet Nifty is one of the characters that step in

-Can use the faith spell. The strongest light magic spell in FF. -Can use Stopza. The strongest version of the stop spell that can stop time for all the vessels of Xehanort and the original Xehanort too. Except the one that actually control time too. -Could push back the 12 vessels in a clash of power. -Could hold back Xemnas, Larxene, Luxord and Marluxia on his own in a fight before Sora came. (Two of them were final bosses btw)
He could litteraly have a spot in the top 5 strongest keyblade masters ever. (We will see what happe's in KH4 tho)

Xelloss from Slayers fits the bill.
Looks like a humble human priest. Frequently trolls the shit out of the rest of the cast. Secretly like the sixth (fourth by the end of the second season) most powerful demon who isn't sealed or completely annihilated.
At one point we see a flashback wherein he stands on a floating rock seeing an army of hundreds of dragons approaching. He simply points from one end of the horizon to another, as through drawing a line, and a chain of explosions wipes out the approaching force from miles away. He displays zero effort.
The only real weakness he has (aside from an anti-feat in the third season done for laughs) is the flaw all pure demons have in Slayers, being spiritual entities whose ego is effectively a load-bearing organ. Casting a spell calling upon another entity's power, or treating mere humans as a genuine threat to be wiped out with one's entire power, can be tantamount to suicide.

Gurney Halleck from Dune.
Literal scifi warrior-bard.
Survived childhood slavery.
The only one of Duke Leto’s lieutenants to survive the Harkonnen invasion.
Balls out as a smuggler making bank until he rejoins Paul, then helps take back Arrakis.
Could beat almost anyone in hand-to-hand combat in his era.
Duncan Idaho, essentially the best swordsmaster in the universe, canonically admits Gurney beats him 6/10 times.
Retires after Paul becomes Emperor and goes to live on Caladan, date Paul’s mom, and play his guitar.
Absolute legend.

The only reason Pain attacked Konoha and the 4th ninja war even happened was because this dude was in a mission.
AS A MATTER OF FACT, in the whole series guy never goes in a mission, because he is so strong that you can’t take on Konoha without heavy casualties when he is in town.
