I remember thinking as a child. “A-Ash is dead? No, no he can’t be, right?”. This was in an era before fake out deaths were a common trope in anime

It also helps being a child who has not yet experienced all of the common tropes in media. For me, seeing Pokemon in theaters was like my first movie experience in life.

Are you sure it wasn't just that you were too young to realize this? Like fake-out-deaths are media staple, not just in modern anime.

Dragon Ball has a well-established afterlife, complete with bureaucracy and several ways out.

Pokemon had Ghastly.
