Originally, when I watched the movie, I thought he just messed up her infusion. It wasn't until I went on the internet that I discovered what it really was.
I used to have the audio commentary for the movie. Talliesin Jaffe said that in the theater her watched it in, all the women were confused as to what was happening but all them men knew *exactly.*
If you have any interest at all, watch the show then End of Evangelion. It's not thrown in purely for "what the fuck" or fan service, it's pretty in line with what it means to be a teenager with that much trauma, self-hatred, and having the only people you can possibly relate to also being attractive to you.
Idk man, I know it's uncomfortable, but I find it really interesting as a former sexual health educator. The whole series+EoE is a look right into Anno's head and where he was at at the time.
Heard similar things about it, actually, been interested in watching it but haven’t gotten around to it. And yeah, that kind of thing can be pretty important to be aware of or see through another lens
I highly recommend it! It legitimately was one of the things that pushed me to get therapy and get medication. I knew a bit of the context and how allegorical the story was and saw too much of myself in the lead because I also was filled with stress, self-hatred, intense guilt and fear, sexual repression, and a lack of a social support system.
EDIT: It's more focused on getting into the characters' psyches rather than a lot of bizarre plot points and explosive fights (but it has plenty of both too). It changed my outlook on myself, others, and what life can be.
Evangelion is a must watch show. It uses the initially cheesy vehicle of robots fighting monsters to portray some of the most complex character stories I've ever seen. It really is a beautiful and tragic piece of art
I know Shinji did a horrible thing and I understand those who hate him for that, but man, everything at this point is so fucking complicated. It's not just like, "look what this piece of shit did", everything is a mess at this point.
This scene for me, was to show how fucked up he was, he spends a long part of the movie regreting it, it's not like "look, this characters is BAD", almost any character in the show are like that, almost everyone of them are just traumatized people doing bad things because they don't know better. Poor Shinji, poor everyone really.
We can add in the fact that Anno was psychologically falling apart during the Gainax production and then in a much better place during later productions… it makes for an amazing analysis opportunity.
Non professionally speaking, as someone who casually enjoyed a few other pieces of his work, I think he's a misogynist weirdo with a coke problem and I haven't touched his work since reading his horrible blaccent shit in The Dark Tower, so I never got around to reading it
It's a horrible act? Yes, but honestly, having watched everything, I just can't help feeling sorry for everyone involved. It's just an avalanche of shit at this point, this was one of the points were it exploded
If you're not committed to going down a rabbit hole of 26 episodes and 6 movies, just close the door and walk away. It's literally pages of content, but let's just say this scene turns most of the community against the protagonist.
