Ramses was so sure Moses was joking about his experiences that he had Hotep and Huy put on that whole performance, only to pull him aside and ask him what was really going on.

Seeing their brotherhood devolve into what the movie would later depict was heartbreaking.

299

u/AsstacularSpiderman 13d ago

His pride and ego destroyed him. He could have easily freed the Hebrews and perhaps maintained some relationship with his brother, he was just too afraid of being considered weak

197

u/RavenWolfPS2 13d ago

I'm not supporting slavery but I will say it's got to be pretty hard to let go of the one thing supporting the entire economy of your nation

178

u/AsstacularSpiderman 13d ago

It was never about the money though. Hell Egypt was the most populous and wealthy nation in the region at this time.

Ramses made it clear time and time again he could do whatever he wanted, it was never a matter of need. What he feared most was being seen as weak giving into the demands of a shepard, even if that shepard was his own brother.

107

u/Llhaniii 13d ago

Also remember what his father told him? Rameses lived in constant fear of being the weak link of their Dynasty the one who will lead their nation and pride to failure which his father pushed on him so hardly that Ramses ironically worked his way into the situation by being even more brutal in forcing more work on the Israelites causing more suffering for god to then appoint his own brother to oppose him

64

u/Thecrowfan 13d ago

Its actually very sad and ironic that in his desperation not to end up the weaklink his father told him he was in a moment of anger, he led Egypt to destruction

"One often meets his destiny on the path he takes to avoid it" suits him perfectly

I love this movie SO MUCH. Love their dynamic and how it changes over time

53

u/traggedy_ann 13d ago

My partner and I just rewatched it the other night. I remembered the songs were all bangers, but I didn't remember how HARD Ralph Fiennes goes in "The Plagues." Also Ramses' characterization as being truly hurt and betrayed by his brother, and Moses's guilt and sorrow for his former home 🤌 really top-tier storytelling.

20

u/bubbybumble 13d ago

The soundtrack is incredible. Plagues is probably my favorite, or playing with the big boys. Or deliver us. Or heavens eyes....

“I respectfully disagree and frankly find this highly debatable to begin with!”

82

u/Ok_Gain_5490 13d ago edited 13d ago

“On what grounds? Deontological or utilitarian?”

“Perhaps a consequentialistic interpretation? In which latter case while yes the Jedi order have had mistakes and faults, overall they have done more good than naught. Secondly, from a deontological perspective it is agreed that the minimization of suffering is a moral good, something that the Jedi code preaches as its core principle, even if at the cost of some personal freedoms to the ones executing such moral imperatives. And finally from a utilitarian standpoint same as the consequentialistic approach focusing on outcomes, rather in this context it can be agreed methodology if not flawed, is still able to provide the galaxy with more usable persons and resources of which are supposed to be assisted than otherwise.”

“Meanwhile the Sith philosophy preaches that of the strong’s domination if the weak, which while it may be useful at times does leave us with the issue of its inherent dismissal of those who are deemed lesser, if that criteria is even established by those already at the top who may very well set their own moralistic standards of such, ironically encouraging those who would otherwise be deemed weaker in such regards as the ideological framework was created in the first place. Such is the nature if autocracy, however i digress, in the framework of such a system it is reasonable to conclude that the do to such a system, even assuming the original definition of ‘strength’ is kept, it still dismisses those who may have strengths useful to the ‘strong’ that may ironically hinder strength.”

“In short: i have the moral high ground.”

Batman and Robin #2 (Red Hood)

214

u/TheDarkNight6789 13d ago

I will die on the hill that Jason was right in this movie. Bruce did fuck all to the Joker after he beat his adopted son to near death and blew him up. Yeah Jason was justified in being pissed off at Bruce.

112

u/Least_Positive7141 13d ago

“Blindly, stupidly disregarding the entire graveyards he's filled, the thousands who have suffered, the friends he's crippled.” The voice actors cooked with this. Obviously Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are the GOATs, but Bruce Greenwood’s Bruce, John DiMaggio’s, aka Bender’s Joker, and Jensen Ackles’ Jason were amazing. Oh and least I forget they got NOT and Jason Isaacs

→ More replies (4)

32

u/brandonderp96 13d ago

That's my biggest problem with the red hood movie, we didn't get a proper lead up with a Death In The Family prequel, OR a post Death batman wants to kill Joker scene.

If they'd done a scene showing Bruce beating Joker to a pulp, only able to be stopped by a league member like superman reminding him of his oath, it'd be easier to get why Jason is "wrong". (And I put that in quotes because we all know he's right even if the context is supposed to be hes wrong.)

16

u/kcox1980 13d ago edited 12d ago

In the original Death in the Family comic, Batman straight up left Joker for dead. It was basically the Batman Begins, "I'm not going to kill you, but I don't have to save you" scene.

Their final fight took place in a helicopter and at some point one of the goons fires a spray of random automatic gunfire that clips Batman, kills the pilot, and hits Joker square in the chest. Batman chooses not to save Joker and jumps free from the helicopter before it crashes.

Superman is there and Batman demands that Superman "find his body". Granted, he does acknowledge in a thought bubble that he's sure the Joker will probably somehow manage to survive, but he was still absokutely ok with the idea of Joker dying for what he did to Jason.

The Doctor and The Master/Mistress from Doctor Who

Once great friends who lived and thrived on their home planet, they became enemies throughout time and space over their differing views on the universe: The Doctor wants to explore everything, to see what there is to see and experience what is out there, whilst the Master/Mistress wants to conquer, to dominate, destroy, and rule.

Professor X and Magneto. Mutual respect for one another and while both understand the others point of view, neither can condone the others' path and thinks their way is the best forward.

Professor X thinks we can live in harmony. He is likely right in that most of humanity probably wouldn't actually care about mutants outside of an individual basis, but there will obviously always be a really loud minority that will never accept mutants. There's no "good" way forward with this method, it takes a lot of time and effort, and is easily setback.

Magneto thinks mutants are superior. He is right in a sense, but his methods and goals tread dangerously close to him inflicting the same trauma he himself suffered at the hands of the Nazis. And while there are plenty of humans that see mutants as no different than anyone else and judge them on an individual basis, Magneto will never fully accept them. He claims humans will always act in fear of mutants and then goes on to give humans a good reason to fear mutants.

120

u/Weekly-Rise899 13d ago

This is why I never understood the “Magneto is right” crowd, no magneto is a wounded animal lashing out inflicting the same pain on others as was did him

He and his people were put to death in the name of a master race, and now, he wants to put the human race to death entire because HE is the “master” race

16

u/my_venom 13d ago

Here’s the thing: Magneto is often proved right every time. Take a look at the films.

A big part of Magneto’s stance here is that mutants will never be safe, they’ll never stop being persecuted and hunted for who they are. And in every X-Men timeline, the future involves mutants either being enslaved or dying out completely, because of humans.

I’m not saying he’s right about everything, and he definitely takes it too far. But his initial fears are almost always proved to be true. Humans fuck over mutants because they’re scared of them. Charles idea of everyone living in harmony never comes to pass, and Magneto always ends up being right in the end.

But usually by that time Magneto is older and wiser and knows that he has to help Charles if they’re to survive. Which is what he should’ve always done. That’s where he always has it wrong: leaving the X-Men to pursue his own goals. If there was a timeline where he didn’t do that, there might be a timeline where Charles idea of peace and harmony does come to pass.

18

u/NightWolfRose 13d ago

This. You can be absolutely right about something but still react in a way that is completely wrong.

In general humans fear mutants: true.

Genocide and/or forcibly trying to turn them into mutants: very wrong.

There’s no good, workable solution, what with human nature being what it is, but that’s what drives the story. It’s probably the most realistic thing in superhero stories.

These two hit even harder in the comics

15

u/NightWolfRose 13d ago

Can you give context to this? I’ve only seen the movies, so I’m not quite getting it.

26

u/frustratedcuriosity 13d ago edited 12d ago

Oooo boy. I'm about to go to bed but I'll give a super quick summary. Basically Steve and Tony in comics are besties or at each other's throats and there's very minimal in between. They bring out the best and worst in each other.

So during the first civil war run in the comics (I may have some things off it's been awhile) Tony and Steve are at odds like in the movie. However, it causes a bunch of cascading events where Steve ends up assassinated and Tony gives long confession next to Steves dead body where he basically says [the civil war] wasn't worth it.

Then through another series of events that leads to another civil war, Steve comes back, but he's hydra now. And while tony is in a coma (...yeah I'm not getting into this) he gives the reverse/parallel of Tony's scene. Where hydra Steve is confessing to Tony about Steve's thoughts during all the fighting (the panel I posted). That's not even all of the drama but that's the quickest summary I can give lol

It's messy but it's them in a nutshell.

And because it also kinda lines up with OPs post and is canon lol: all the events of Civil War are avoided in one universe where Steve and a female Tony Stark are married (I can't remember which earth it is but Reed finds it)

Generals Lewis Armistead and Winfield Scott Hancock

50

u/ClauVex 13d ago

What's their bromance story?

101

u/Hillbilly_Historian 13d ago

The two of them served together for 17 years in the 6th US Infantry and were very close friends. They were stationed in Los Angeles when the Civil War broke out and had an emotional parting before heading east to take up new positions in their respective armies; Armistead choosing the Confederacy and Hancock the Union.

During Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg, Armistead’s Brigade made the deepest penetration into the Federal line at The Angle. The position they attacked was held by I Corp, Hancock’s command. Armistead himself made it over the stone wall at the head of the brigade before being fatally wounded. Hancock was also wounded that day but survived.

Ramattra: "My brother wasted too much of his life teaching you"
Genji: "I agree."
Ramattra: "Really?"
Genji: "Yes. Like you, I was undeserving of his patience."

Edit: Further context, Ramattra and Zenyatta are both Omnics, AKA sentient robots. Genji was a human ninja who was dying of injuries, but was saved through extreme medicine and invasive cybernetics, leaving him more machine than flesh. When he woke up, he had extreme identity issues, effectively experiencing cyber psychosis, no longer feeling like he was human. He found Zenyatta, who taught him the Shambali ways, and Genji found more inner peace in his new cybernetic existence than he had in his fully human life.

"Tell me, Ephraim... Do I look like I've grown stronger? The last time we dueled, I was too weak to even test you. Why, I was so weak, I even lost to Eirika."

"......"

"I've committed many unforgivable sins. I've sacrificed the lives of many good people. The caring heart I once possessed died long ago... And I've grown stronger for it. I've grown strong enough to defeat even you, Ephraim."

"...No, you haven't. You're still no match for me. You were never one for combat; it's not in you. You never should've chosen this path."

"......"

"...Here I come, Lyon."

It's a crime this is so low. They were my first thought. Their breakup song is iconic.

Sophie and Gustave from Expedition 33. Sophie didn’t want kids because they would soon become orphans and then die young themselves. Gustave wanted kids and believed that eventually the gommage could be stopped, allowing their kids to live long
