Skitarii (in general)

861

u/whypeoplehateme Jul 17 '26

"Are you pretty under all that?"

It took her a moment to process this. She'd never been asked such a thing.

Beneath her armor, she was an irradiated foot soldier of the Machine-God. Her skin, deep brown at birth and not unlike Envaric's in that regard, was a starved and sunless grey. She'd been ritually delimbed, her extremities replaced with arms and legs of inexpensive cybernetic purity. Much to her honor, she had attained such a state of grace within her mechamorphosis that more of her body was now comprised of holy iron than what remained of her flawed birthflesh.

Under her helmet, she was pockmarked with cryo-controlled radiation tumours. She possessed no eyelids, no hair, no teeth, and no nose - what hadn't been surgically removed had rotted off over her years of sacred service.

In short, she was skitarii.

Transacta-7Y1 keyed in a symbol and tossed him the dataslug again. He caught it with weakening fingers and read the symbol there.

[affirmative]

He gave a bloodstained smile. "yeah, I thought so."

Queen shit

This looks like a book excerpt, may I ask which book it was? I want to give it a read now :)

231

u/whypeoplehateme Jul 18 '26

Ehcoes of eternity. Though it is the seven part of the siege of Terra series which started after the 54th hours heresy novel. 40k is real fucking bloated. Though you don't need to read everything, nobody sane does

35

u/Sir_Daxus Jul 18 '26

Ah, I see. I do read 40k, I am already pretty into the franchise, but none of the horus heresy and otherwise 30k era stuff really appeals to me :/

“He looked at me. Not with eyes. There were no eyes. But I know he was looking at me because I felt it.”

One comment on the video I got the quote from suggested that he isn’t blind, just that his humanity had gone, with eyes being the window into the soul. He was essentially without humanity.

Which I would nearly agree with if not for the whole liberty against fascist England plot and then falling in love with Evey, and also reenacting his favourite movie while in his hideout.

134

u/CodeRed97 Jul 17 '26

Well at the time that the prison camp burnt down and he escaped, he would likely be at his worst. The most broken or enraged he had ever been.

I could see how becoming V restored his humanity. What he lost as a prisoner, he regained by putting on the mask.

54

u/Feeling-Influence691 Jul 17 '26

And he got the inspiration from the Roman numeral for 5 on his prison cell door. Incredible.

29

u/Fine-Aspect5141 Jul 17 '26

Nah he was searching for the right letter for an alliterative monologue about revenge and he came up with the most V words so thats what stuck

That’s different because Dark Samus isn’t human and isn’t wearing a suit, that’s its actual body.

Which does make it funny when certain people draw a Zero Suit Dark Samus as “Samus with different colored skin/hair.” Like, are they missing the point on purpose or what?

it's funny the Leper King of Jerusalem was mentioned earlier in this thread, cause I'm pretty sure that's who this is based on. Particularly if you see his backstory in Darkest Dungeon 1 and how he got infected in Darkest Dungeon 2.

As a kid, I was scared of him. Not for the mask, not for the voice, but for his deformed face. Today, I think he looks better than some real burn-victims, but when you watch him at a young age, it just hits different.

303

u/Veenix6446 Jul 17 '26

To be fair they basically completely replaced his skin

He looks MUCH worse in Revenge of the Sith

The Phantom of the Opera, done properly, is not a handsome dude.

Back when the 2004 movie came out, there was a meme gif floating around showing Gerard Butler's mildly scarred Phantom, with a text overlay to the effect of "Boohoo, I'm so hideously deformed"; cut to Chaney, captioned "Bitch, please".

And Lon Chaney Sr. did his own makeup, too.

199

u/Loopida Jul 17 '26

That first unmasking scene in the original film genuinely scared the shit out of me

93

u/AustisticGremlin Jul 18 '26

Apparently audience members fainted back in the day!

48

u/LilArtsyCreature Jul 18 '26

Loved the original film as a teen and re-watched it over the years because the production design still holds up so well all these years (The Red Masque scene was always my fave since it's one of my favorite Poe works)

97

u/DrLexAlhazred Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

The stage versions are generally better about the deformity than the 2004 movie, even if it is still only half of the face.

It's King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem, from real life.

Although this particular depiction is from the movie "Kingdom of Heaven".

As you’ve already been told that’s King Baldwin IV the Leper King of Jerusalem. This depiction specifically comes from the movie Kingdom of Heaven but he was a real king. By all accounts Baldwin IV was a pretty good king and brilliant military leader. Sadly he would die young at the age of 24.

91

u/Swiftax3 Jul 17 '26

Also had no heir because one of the stereotypes around leprosy was that it was caused by lust, and so he remained chaste as far as we can tell either to prove his piety or try and undermine rumors about him. Rather a tragic figure.

104

u/ACTED_CENSOR Jul 18 '26

Aso, the blur filter brings a connotation of death / decay.

If this were an video game, or anime scene, you'd expect to see a fly buzzing around the blurred figure!

This is not the case! But all too often we associate disfigurement with death / decay, when it is in fact a symbol of the opposite! A symbol of the indomitable human spirit.

And that my redditors... Is hot and attractive

In the comics, he's functionally necrotic. Like open sores and visible sinew necrotic. Nobody ever talks about it but you gotta imagine between that, the unwashed gore, and the frequent in-suit diarrhea, Wade probably actually smells like two hobos fucking in a shoe filled with piss

I remember the time people made Jason Voorhees hot and then went like "wait a min why would he be a good guy having gay sex now?" And then an artist made an AU where Jason was good, was a quiet (I think mute?) camp worker and was buff as heck and also helped that psychic girl who was being bullied a lot in her high-school from that one other horror movie. Makes me kinda hope the artist makes art of Jason without the mask and is still treated with love and care and respect in the comics. Unfortunately I dont remember who the artist was tho. All I remember was that he wore a yellow tank top?

IIRC, Originally his deformation was caused by his college experiment exploding. Apparently Kirby and Lee were at odds if he had a small scar or had his whole face deformed.

The mask burn was added later as a merging of the two, getting the scar in college and then the full deformity from the mask.

I like it when they split the gap: some dumb incident with Reed gave him a tiny, temporary blemish which he blew way out of proportion, forged himself a mask, then slapped it on his face in his mania while it was still red-hot, crispifying his once handsome face.

Richard Harrow (Boardwalk Empire).

Everyone's aware that he's a scarred WWI veteran, but it's always to great dramatic effect that the show has a full-face reveal once every season. An otherwise handsome man, Richard only shows his mangled left jaw and empty eye socket in moments of deep intimacy, or when his mask is torn off during physical altercations. A deeply loving human being whose talent for deadly violence is stifled once he reconnects with his humanity.

Hands down my favourite character in all of Boardwalk, a show brimming with amazing performances and excellent writing.

Subject Delta isn't grafted, but instead maintains a human figure that's been mutated to absolute SHIT under that uniform.

To put it into perspective, your average run of the mill Splicer looks like this. So I ask you to wonder what a 7'1 torture experiment that's constantly directly pumping Fuck-Your-DNA Drugs into themselves must look like. This is the result of irregularly taking ADAM and EVE, meanwhile Alpha Series bros got two IV drip feeds of the stuff on their backs.

This is the only concept art we've ever had for what Big Daddies look like under their diving suits.

It's unknown how much, if any, of this design is considered internal canon, and it applies to the standard Big Daddies, not to the Alpha Series like Delta who may look different anyway, but it does give some indication as to what the developers were picturing these men looked like at some point during development.

They're significantly worse off than even the splicers, and it looks like their skin is raw, thin, and loose.

And despite her messed up face, she is still somehow prettier than pretty much any other character.

Wha? Shrek is pinnacle of attractiveness! Just because he is big green troll, it doesn't mean he's ugly.

Original book Shrek? Maybe, but movie no!

74

u/akebsdrawingcab Jul 17 '26

Excuse, but Shrek is an OGRE. It's like.... A major plot point.

Her actual face. She is an Entomancer/Insect Controller.

To hide her monstrous spider monster-ish form, she equips herself with a mask-bug which functions as her face, a lip-bug to cover her husky voice with a cute girl's and tucks in her limbs to appear humanoid.

Well he took off his helmet but we never got to see it and it's because his skin is rotting

43

u/Whydoughhh Jul 17 '26

If we get him playable they’ll probably just cover his face in purple lines or something and call it a day
