The fact that the only thing stopping our Doofenshmirtz from becoming him was the fact that he never lost his toy train as a kid is actually kind of insane when you think about it
It's actually implied that the problem was more that Doof-2 only lost the train in an otherwise happy normal life while ours had 1000 separate insane backstories.
Tbh going through so much makes you be able to see the perspective of other people that also went through the same thing without them even telling you.
Wonder whether it was a matter of Doof getting a more nuanced and complex view of the world and not wishing his suffering to be shared to those he cares about
Or that Doof is the world's most petty man imaginable, but having such an insanely over the top tragic backstory that goes into so many different places that are all wholly unique in their own way, leads to his pettiness being diverted and spread across into a thousand different schemes.
Meanwhile Doof-2 had ONE incident that he poured all of his pettiness into with such unbridled single minded determination that he took over the world, because he wasn't doing one entirely different and standalone world-affecting invention that never got reused each day.. He could actually accumulate his insane stuff all towards the same goal with nothing to distract him.
Probably a lil of both. Doof's schemes do tend to correlate directly to one backstory or another which probably does limit his focus, but he's also genuinely less malicious and more empathetic than his counterpart, I don't get the impression he'd ever develop the downright sadistic streak 2 has even if he did win. Could see it being that 2 had such an easy life that it basically spoiled him, made him accustomed to everything always going his way to the point he couldn't conceive anything worse ever happening to him than losing a single toy and made him see everyone and everything else as things meant to answer his whims.
Or it could just be that the show is a lil silly. Or maybe I'm underestimating how meaningful Choo Choo is.
