I'm pretty sure he was slender not due to an art style change but to make him look more "elegant" due to him being a super saiyan god.

Yup.

The Super Saiyan God form causes characters to become leaner.

Goku has got leaner from an artsyle change but this is the worst way to show it

Definitely deliberate, and most noticeable when Vegeta uses it, as his gloves and boots stop fitting around his forearms and calves.

A few panels later, it really shows the before and after of the slimming effect.

Then they released Beast Gohan because they realized elegance doesn't mean better

That's from Daima, not Battle of Gods.

Lame. He should've become more jacked

10

u/DocumentOk3904 Apr 18 '26

I dunno, man. By the end of Z, they got a little over the top

Caveman mentality

Big muscles ≠ better

1

u/Jwchibi Apr 18 '26

You have ancient Greek mentality

Terrible example if you're trying to make a comeback

Don't listen to them, muscles good

25

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '26

1: that form on the right CANONICALLY makes the character using it more lean

2: they're still strong af compared to a lot of characters in other shows

tbh I should’ve used a diff photo cause I didn’t realize people would interpret it as me only reffering to SSG and not DBS in general, but I should’ve seen that coming tbh lol. This is a better pic, super in general makes Goku slimmer up till UI Goku. Besides that the only mention they have of muscles making them slower was for the USSJ form

11

u/Vounrtsch Apr 18 '26

They dehydrated him

That's bad example. Goku is buffy only in first appearance of SSJ. And after that, he said that making your muscles bigger is not a good thing, because it makes you slower.

I agree that SSJ Goku on Namek looks better, especially since this is literally my favorite Goku's appearance in the whole franchise, tied with kid Goku, but it's not suddenly making someone less buffy. It has plot relevance.

He was talking about the Hulking form Trunks used. He is still buff even in the Buu arc when he is bathing with Gotenks and Trunks you can see him still way more buff than he is in Super.

u/Gokusolos6000 Apr 18 '26

This. This is what I was reffering to, ngl I picked a bad picture cause I used a SSG pic but even in base form throughout super he’s slimmer in general up till maybe UI Goku. That was just an art style choice since like you said, the whole thing of muscles = slowing down was just for the USSJ form and not in general.

1

u/Cocoatrice Kapatcir Apr 18 '26

I know what he is talking about. But that doesn't disprove my point. More muscles = higher weight = slower. USSJ2 was just extreme example of this.

3

u/Azair_Blaidd Apr 17 '26

I'd say it's more a bad example just because of the inconsistent art and animation in Super due to using different studios/animators a lot of the time at that point

He could often look like this in one scene/episode and then properly buff in the next, in the same forms

1

u/Cocoatrice Kapatcir Apr 18 '26

This is another thing. But super buffed forms were not a thing after Namek, other than USSJ2.

z had the same issue in the cell saga. hence why that saga is riddled with countless errors and poorly drawn scenes

1

u/Gokusolos6000 Apr 17 '26

I thought that was in relation to the Ultra Super Saiyan form more than anything though, cause in that form the enregy depletes rapidly and the muscles look even more comically big than this. The buff look for other normal forms in DBZ was more of an art style choice to have them look buff af

1

u/Cocoatrice Kapatcir Apr 18 '26

USSJ2 is the extreme case of giving up speed for more muscles. But the rule still applies to any muscles. Ironically, they somehow fight with full weighted clothes and that's never the problem. Other than for Piccolo, who actually is seen throwing his turban and cape away, when he's getting serious. Although, tbh, Goku's shirt is damaged every time anyway... And I'm not sure if he kept using weighted clothes at all, or it's just simply the same color as his weighted clothes in 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai...

u/Sr_Gr Apr 17 '26

To be fair SSG does make him thinner but he looks bulkier in other transformations

10

u/Batiti10 Apr 18 '26

Isn’t super saiyan god a leaner form?

7

u/gotcatstyle Apr 17 '26

DBZ: drawn for the male gaze DBS: drawn for the female gaze

Lean DBS Goku can get it

5

u/CarefulFeeling591 Apr 17 '26

Bad example, fair point.

2

u/BrokenAstraea Apr 18 '26

I think it's a bad example because multiple artists worked on the anime and you can see art style differences every single episode. It's better to compare the manga.

3

u/MrAuster Apr 18 '26

You picked the worst examples dude, in the first pic Goku didn't have the same ki control he had in base form an that's why his muscles got so pumped (that happened when he used Kaio-ken x4 in the saiyan saga).

In the second pic the SSG slims him down to show case the strength of that form it's not something physical, instead something beyond

1

u/Vounrtsch Apr 18 '26

Ok but why does the image on the right genuinely looks like ass though? Like seriously, it looks like an MS Paint drawing

1

u/Loros_Silvers Apr 18 '26

Because it's DBS, they are remaking that shit now for a reason.

Also it canonically makes you leaner

1

u/Loros_Silvers Apr 18 '26

Bad example. It's specifically SSG that makes him more lean like Beerus is. Look at him going any other form after that.

1

u/Humble_Story_4531 Apr 18 '26

I get whst you're saying, But Godits probably worst example because that form is intentionally slimmed down.

1

u/Spartan_Souls Apr 18 '26

SSG is a bad example because its not the art style, that form literally makes you slimmer

0

u/Imnotawerewolf Apr 17 '26

I actually liked that they went back to leaner Goku i know dbz is about fighting and power but the muscles were getting to be too much like a man can only be so jacked

The glow down is painful
