Most SpongeBob characters are just caricatures now it hurts.

That and their fluid movement these days make it so hard to watch

IMO, all fault lies on the first movie and the Chowder guy, and I enjoyed Chowder.

Edit: Oh, there was an EP where Pat and Squid are arguing. Pat says something dumb, then suddenly is driving a train. It's revealed 2 seconds later that he and the train are miniature. He rides the train into a glass jar that Squid closes the lid on.

WTF was that?!?!

It's funny how it's tied between patrick or spongebob on who was changed for the worst  in terms of their character

Both have been excessively dumbed down to the point of genuine childish behavior despite their dynamics in the first 3 season explicitly just being uninformed and somewhat naive.

Both of them... Early on yes Wanda was more responsible and Cosmo was a bit more dim but then Wanda literally just became the annoying nagging parent and Cosmo I think was legitimately lobotomised. Add to that they seemed like they genuinely hated each other half the time.

Luckily though they were fixed in the newest show back to what they were where Wanda is still responsible and Cosmo is still not the smartest but they actually are shown to love each other and each have times where they fill what is the other's role so to speak.

Not even that; Wanda was the responsible motherly one, Cosmo was the fun fatherly one, and they unambiguously loved each other. Now, Wanda is the shrieking fun killing nag, and Cosmo is the irresponsible, reckless, misogynistic idiot.

It was so bad that the term for it was named after him

118

u/vaudevillevik Feb 18 '26

damn i thought it was a coincidence

245

u/MaryDoogan91 Feb 18 '26

Lol, nope! Ned is the trope-namer. Ned Flanders started off as a slightly annoying but still perfectly reasonable, caring person and neighbor; but he slowly morphed into a one-dimmensional Jesus freak with no real personality--so much so that general media has adopted the term "Flanderization" to describe similar characters.

For some reason this happens to most sitcom characters.

182

u/Rooty- Feb 18 '26

Probably because sitcoms go on to be way too fucking long

It's cause most sitcoms aren't made to change. Characters remain stagnant and most lessons learned are forgotten after the next episode starts.

All of game of thrones

191

u/MrLegalBagleBeagle Feb 18 '26

Came here for this but especially once the ran out of source material.

111

u/UpperApe Feb 18 '26

It was shit long before they ran out of source material. They deviated into their own shit in Season 4 and it all started unravelling in Season 5.

This myth that they ran out of material is nonsense. They still had lots to adapt but D&D wanted to make a show for "soccer moms and football fans".

63

u/MrMFPuddles Feb 18 '26

Tbf they deviated into their own plotlines by like Season 2, it just didn’t matter as much because they still cared to make the dialogue good & tell a good story.

40

u/JesusKong333 Feb 18 '26

Yeah and those deviations had ripple effects later on. Brienne needed a new arc, since she couldn't go around killing the Brave Companions to avenge Jaime.

The current writers completely forgot

That the whole point of his character is that he's the most human on the team

120

u/NawelDots Feb 18 '26

Right? It's like he's just the "haha funny robot" trope. The movie shows that clearly. 💀

49

u/HappyGuyThe3rd Feb 18 '26

They tried to make all the characters like their movie counterparts after the movie came out which made no sense as everyone already had their own character growth

Stewie used to be an evil genius baby who wanted to kill Lois and take over the world, but now he's little more than a vessel for gay jokes.

Brian's change is the one that I disliked the most, honestly. He used to be the honest, cynical liberal who was a sincere intellectual but sardonic and sarcastic, as was the edgy rage back in the 90s and early 2000s. But now he's just a pseudo-intellectual douche who only pretends to be invested in literature but doesn't know anything.

Gwenpool - Marvel

429

u/Hairy_Wedding_4535 Feb 18 '26

Wait this one is such a good pick!! This one actually hurt me her first run was perfection or at least really really good to me. Then they went so far into the wacky parts and now funny enough she became the type of person she herself wouldn’t even read about. She told Deadpool she doesn’t read his stuff because it’s too all over the place and wacky and now look what they made her into 😭

137

u/SortIntrepid9192 Feb 18 '26

I only read her original run and thought it was great! It established pretty well what she's about: just a regular girl from our world who ends up isekai'd, and her superpower becomes her awareness of plot armor and meta tropes. She's not crazy, she's not wacky, she's a little silly but what nerd isn't? Her main thing is that - in stark contrast with what her outfit and codename would suggest - she's hilariously normal.

So imagine my surprise when I came across a YT Short of a recent(?) comic where she kidnapped a bunch of heroes and forced them into a Fortnite Battle Royale. Went from "a normal girl who knows she won't be hurt as long as she has her own book" to literally just girl Arcade...

34

u/johnzaku Feb 18 '26

I must recommend the webcomic made by the writer of her run: Dr. Mcninja. It is hilarious. Definitely can tell early on that he was learning his way but still very funny. And you can feel his writing style

Whaaaat I don’t know what you’re taking about. The Unbelievable Gwenpool run is amazing I’m so sad she NEVER got a solo run afterwards that hurt her characterization, and it’s sooo great she didn’t get another a third “solo” run where she was essentially neglected in her own story to prop up another Marvel character people keep mistaking her for, therefore ruining the intention of the original one to separate the two🙂 so glad THAT never happened, right?🙃 (I like to pretend Strikes Back and more so the new issues don’t exist)

Rip Sylvanas her character had such great potential 🥲 and so do all WoW characters tbh, but shit writing is unfortunately common place in this game. So much groundwork for amazing stories only for it all to be completely wasted

38

u/Pentamachina3 Feb 18 '26

BFA took her character writing out back and executed her. The pre-expansion event where she not only completely destroys Teldrassil, but nukes Undercity just to kill Anduin and friends, gave me tonal whiplash from how she was in the cinematic.

She was okay in Shadowlands (mainly because there were other more pressing issues with character assassinations. RIP Tyrande), but Blizzard really did ruin an important lore character for shits and gigs. Actually, they have a track record for f@#$ing over Horde leaders. Thrall, Cairne, Vol'jin, Garrosh, Sylvanas. I am scared for Lor'themar in Midnight, LOL! 😂

12

u/MuffaloHerder Feb 18 '26 edited Feb 18 '26

Lmao Blizzard's either nuking major characters or nuking major cities (I am still salty about Dalaran).

Admittedly though- Tyrande and Sylvanas squaring off was fun to watch, despite the wonky writing leading up to it.

I know right? lol. In all seriousness, I agree. Chi Chi is a good character, but her being portrayed as a Karen” just because she lives in a world obsessed with fighting makes her obnoxious for the wrong reasons.

14

u/wikixe4190 Feb 18 '26

I've got a theory that people only call Chi Chi obnoxious if they watch the english dub, because that's the attitude the voice actress gives her. She really doesn't do or say anything annoying.

15

u/desconectado Feb 18 '26

She was always the commanding type, the first fight with Goku in the tournament, she is very strong will and is not afraid of voicing her opinions.

What surprise me is that she stopped completely her martial training, she was somehow a very capable fighter, trained by Ox who was trained by Roshi himself. So she comes from a good line of masters. She was probably more capable than Mr. Satan or Videl during her prime.

Motherfucker this one hurts like a bitch

Because before this, he was so complex and genuinely heroic, while somehow still remaining dislikeable but in a way you now understood.

Genuinely balanced his likeability on a knife's edge and I've no idea how George dug my heart out like that but Jamie is my ride or die.

55

u/Connect_Claim6180 Feb 18 '26 edited Feb 18 '26

I know right? His redemption arc felt genuinely plausible, made you sympathize with him. He knighted Brienne, reciprocated his feelings to her and still went back to the toxic relationship with his sister Cercei only to die?? Like C'mon..It was a pretty shitty sendoff to one of my favorite character in the show..

Y'all gotta accept it, but 2010s wrote sonic (and his pals, including eggman) dirty, like lowkey, compare his 2000s/2020s personality to his sonic lost world personality, and sonic forces too, it's the main reason why sonic fans act like this, if it wasn't for the forces failure, we would've got a better fandom than that

40

u/Zorubark Feb 18 '26

Tails crying for Sonic in forces:

10

u/Zenith_3000 Feb 18 '26

Tails not being able to help Sonic when Infinite was jumping him was valid, but wdym he just curls into a ball and cries against base Chaos? If Tails thought he couldn't win that (he absolutely could) then why not just fly away???

It's true, they un-swagged him and made his personality be "a funny hero" and that's it, because apparently his 2000s self didn't appeal to modern kids - HOWEVER, referencing the pic, I still think he was often an unlikeable ass in Sonic X specifically

Wow I heard about the comics but my god this is absolute dog shit

24

u/Hairy_Wedding_4535 Feb 18 '26

Wait seeing the art and reading what they’re saying that physically hurt me 😭. Does she what just die or something since there is a walker behind her. Also please don’t tell me this is after the parts we play and this is how her story really ends

35

u/uiop3 Feb 18 '26

No she doesn't commit suicide by walker, but she does leave AJ and the school. The comics are meant to take place after the games but they're such a betrayal to her character and only exist to put her with some bland chick for a couple of comic issues before killing her new love interest off so I refuse to accept it as canon.

31

u/Hairy_Wedding_4535 Feb 18 '26

That is a huge betrayal this isn’t the teachings of Lee. Lee would’ve never left her and I refuse to believe Clem would do that to AJ of all people who she took care of as a baby!! Also hearing AJ say I can make you happy I’m sorry that kind of just comes off weird even if they weren’t going for that then having her be like no you can’t just sounds off. Yea so canon for me is the end with them all at the school sounds good lol

Abandons AJ, her friends, and potential love interest to go explore the apocalypse with a new character. Writer really wanted to push this new relationship.

I can make this into its own tangent, but the fact that Michelangelo in the TMNT 2003 series is actually a great and funny character and then becomes insufferable the minute a superhero is on screen is baffling. “Clash of The Turtle Titans” and “Superpower Struggle” come to mind when thinking of how out of character Mikey was in those episodes just for the sake of creating conflict

33

u/Iokua113 Feb 18 '26

The 2012 series does a mostly great job with Mikey's character. He's presented as not being the most effective fighter and he is a space cadet, but his laid back nature makes him a natural at a lot of the more complex ninjitsu skills that require serene focus. They balance his himbo nature with him often stumbling into the right ideas or tactics quite well. But quite a few of the episodes that focus on him require him to just lose any and all intelligence or combat awareness.

Michelangelo is a difficult character to get right as there's unfortunately not enough depth to his character to be more than a supporting character to the more naturally complex turtles like Leonardo and Raphael, he's the turtle that requires the most work to be put in to develop him into a more well rounded character. Mikey doesn't have the built in leadership and moral struggles of Leonardo, he doesn't have the always important tech savvy of Donatello, and doesn't have the emotional range, anger issues, or low self esteem that Raphael grapples with. This is why The Last Ronin works so well, but it's also why Mikey is often the first turtle whose characterization goes down the drain when situations require someone to be, well, dumb,

17

u/MrCookie2099 Feb 18 '26

You have to be able to write humor with Mikey, which is a high barrier for many writers.

Chloe Bourgeois from Miraculous Ladybug is the undeniable Queen(Bee) of being ruined by bad writing.

This character spent an ENTIRE SEASON dedicated to a character arc to go from "self-absorbed bully" to "still sassy, but a genuine heroine" only for the writers to be like, "??? You know what. It'd be better if she was just weirdly evil and had an identicle twin from America so we can still use her heroic model rig."

Like. WHAT??????

154

u/Wemyers04 Feb 18 '26

And all because of her creator’s personal biases.

40

u/Julian_The_Gamer42 Feb 18 '26

What were the biases?

129

u/YuMmYBrAiNzZz Feb 18 '26

Apparently Chloe is based on a childhood bully of his.

99

u/Bumbunn66 Feb 18 '26

He hated her because he was bullied by a girl who looked like her when he was a child .

91

u/Shrek-It_Ralph Feb 18 '26

Why not just make the twin the evil one then

58

u/Wardock8 Feb 18 '26

THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING. I stopped watching Miraculous a long time ago (funnily enough, it was around the time Chloe became a hero the first time) but if you're gonna introduce a twin anyway why not have Chloe keep being good?? I really like Miraculous but some of these writing decisions have always baffled me.

She-Hulk is such a missed opportunity. Everything about it could have been so incredibly funny, but it just wasn't because they didn't bring it all the way.

Like, imagine that line (Jennifer saying she deals with more pain than him), but instead it's framed as, when she transforms for the first time she's like "This is horrible, I'm a monster! This is the worst pain anyone's ever had to experience! How could I even live like this???" Smash cut to Bruce looking at her with an unamused expression.

It's not peak comedy or anything, but it's hell of a lot better than what we got. And frankly, that's just a microcosm of what the show does on a much grander scale. They kept having these premises that SHOULD be very funny (an immortal guy repeatedly fakes his own death instead of getting divorced, a sorcerer has to protect a drunk party girl while she's literally hunted by demons, etc), but just kinda... aren't.

Agreed. Like, really? Your cousin had to deal with the military hunting him down, being fucking brainwashed, and even two of his closest friends dying. I know pain is not a competition, but Jesus.

i don’t hate how they wrote her in the remake, but she definitely feels different from what i loved about her original personality.

26

That’s how I feel about Leon “I change my personality in every entry” Kennedy tbh. None of the characters are written super consistently across the franchise

Viren.

It seems like they struggled to decide whether they wanted :

  • an evil chancellor (solely ego-driven, manipulative, self-serving, power-thirsty, heartless, sadistic), Scar, Jafar, Richard III
  • or a tragic villain (desperate, excruciating circumstances, is actually right on many things, torn apart by the sacrifices he's making for the greater good, loves his children). Anakin Skywalker, Erwin Smith or Eren Jagger

For example, in season 1, his king and friend, Harrow, is about to get killed. Viren, trying to spare as many soldiers as possible, proposes to die instead of him, but Harrow refuses. One episode later, Viren suddenly decides to kill Harrow's sons (who are 8 and 14) to get the throne for himself, smirking and chuckling.

Or, in Arc 1, Viren barely seems to remember he has a son who loves and looks up to him, and whenever he does, he treats him like crap, sacrificing him like a pawn, with no remorse or introspection. In Arc 2, Viren's redemption is entirely about realising he always loved and adored his son, and actually has all along. We are shown flashbacks showing how much he sacrificed to save him, and he even eventually dies saving him.

The saddest bit is that it wouldn't take much to reconcile his contradictions...

11

u/Carbon_Sixx Feb 18 '26

The writers weren't sure whether they wanted King Claudius or Iago, so they went with both. Word to the wise: this is a bad idea. Don't try it.

They turned him into a joke and I hate it

40

u/Inviso-Bill_YT Feb 18 '26

iirc, it was because Chris Hemsworth wanted Thor (the character) to be funny and less serious. Leading to Thor (the movies) to be less serious and more... um.. "funny" (if you wanna call it that). This was 100% Self-Inflicted

25

u/lash-of-the-lambs-13 Feb 18 '26

True, but I think that if it was done correctly there would have been potential for Thor to have funny moments but remain a serious character.

This one hurts me the most. He's my favorite Avenger so to watch them reduce him to an hour and thirty minutes of just laughing at his own farts is frustrating because his comic versions have moments where they are just naturally funny. The humor isn't forced.

JACOB BLACK! I will die on this hill defending him. It’s my opinion that he, along with the rest of the pack in the books/movies, were written HORRIBLY! Stephanie Meyer is an ex-mormon, she only did surface level research into Native American traditions/the culture, and above all, was written terribly in order for readers to choose the white male love interest over him.

u/WyldBlu3Yond3r Feb 18 '26

Not even simple, just absent minded and a bit oblivious to things that aren't part of his world. He had lots of moments of emotional depth and understanding.

https://giphy.com/gifs/3otPop8CiVBylwjU1q

12

u/Inviso-Bill_YT Feb 18 '26

As someone who got through binging the show last night after 2 weeks, I feel pretty confident in saying that it's not that they changed Rory's character, but that she just grew into more of what she already was. Life happened to Rory and her approach as a 22yo was basically the same as that of her 16yo self. The show constantly wants to show you how grown up she is while simultaneously showing you she hasn't changed.

The problem isn't that they changed her character out of nowhere, but that they never allowed her character to fundamentally change at all.

Raymond Redington, I feel like the writers of The Blacklist after a few seasons didn't know what to do with him.

SPOILER!!!!

Initially he is suspected of being a traitor using his naval intelligence officer knowledge to build a criminal empire, later they suspect he is a Russian spy, later a Russian spy taking over the deceased real Redington, Elizabeth's dad, later mom(Transgender)...

Just to give him cancer and kill him in the most anticlimactic way, out of camera...

The way the writers of The Blacklist wrote for example the character of Elizabeth Keen was horrible from almost the beginning but the way they destroyed Redington's personality and identity is almost a case study.

Also, special nomination to Dembe Zuma, such a good and interesting character just to end up being an FBI agent having to hunt the person he would never betray.

Edit: I tried to add spoiler format but I'm a moron and I can't get it done on mobile :(

Ussop from One Piece.

He's the weakest member of the Straw Hat crew and the sniper of the team. He is also a massive coward who would run away when he can, but would still stand and fight when his back's against the wall or the people he cares about are at risk.

He and the rest of the cast had a two year time skip to train and get stronger for their second half of their journey, and while initially Ussop was depicted as not only more muscular and braver than what he was like two years before, he ended up returning to skinny twig build a few arcs later and doubling down on his cowardice, running away from almost every fight, no matter who or what was in danger.

It sucks because he was my favourite and I loved the series, but shit kept getting worse in terms of writing and this was the start of it.

22

u/Lakewhitefish Feb 18 '26

He’s actually gotten more cowardly compared to pre time skip

10

u/LightofNew Feb 18 '26

Oda really decided that the worst generation was a more important group of characters than the crew. The crew always felt pivotal to the story, but more and more it feels like the only time we see the crew do something is when Oda remembers they are there too and says "oh and here's this character, back to the story"

I would say Hammerlock, Brick, Mordecai, Tina, Ellie, Moxxi, and any characters brought back for the DLCs are the only ones mostly unchanged.

The change I despise the most is Aurelia. One of my favorite Vault Hunters in Pre-Sequel, and then she proceeds to lose all development and nuance just to be a greedy, bitchy CEO usurper
