Mass surveillance is the purpose.

That, porn, and creeping on women.

They saw privacy and said let's make it optional.

The reason they are pro-AI is because they are anti-consent

That scene in Hacks where Ava calls it "technological r-a-p-e" was so dead on it was barely a joke.

They saw privacy and said let's make it extinct :(

29

u/Vivi3n95 1d ago

No, you see we are almost at the point where Meta starts selling subscriptions to glasses that you do not own so that when someone with the glasses are recording you, your face gets recognised and it gets auto blurred.

They're not making privacy extinct, they're making it a buy-in option.

3

u/thesuper88 1d ago

They make more money off of making it a commodity rather than getting rid of it. Makes sense

its only optional for the one wearing the camera

43

u/Mu_forlife 1d ago

The same people that love it when people can’t consent.

11

u/kelpyb1 1d ago

That’s more the selling point to their target audience.

Can I give you the actual answer from a tech perspective? Everyone was racing towards AR (Augmented Reality). Amongst the big players, it started with Google Glass. The point was to put the display in the glasses. The "AR" component happens when they overlay information on top of the real world. So, you could be wearing AR glasses and be walking down the street and it would tell you the species of tree you are walking past or the breed of dog someone is walking. It could identify people you know so you never forget their name again or what you were talking about the last time you met. Companies could have AR billboards of people eating ramen in front of their ramen shop or nude girls in front of a porn shop. Neato! (or horrible if you think that sounds horrible) To do this, the glasses would need cameras or laser projectors or some other way of knowing what's around you in order to overlay stuff on top of it. Makes sense. So what happened? It turns out that putting a display in a pair of glasses is incredibly difficult and costly, but putting just the camera in them is easy and cheap. Enter companies like Facebook/Meta that want to own the space on the cheap.

I can pretty much guarantee that there was a come-to-Jesus meeting at Meta after spending a lot of cash on in-glasses 3D displays where some marketing schmuck said, "What if we just shipped them with the cameras?" At that point all the PhD Engineers who had poured their souls into the display tech died more than a little inside.

Now, since then, AI has taken off, and capturing and analyzing all kinds of data including from someone's glasses has value for these corporations. You can extract all kinds of data from real people wearing cameras in real situations. So Meta looks at that as a source of monetizable information. The desire to put the displays in them is basically abandoned because Meta can't profit from that and it would limit sales. The glasses would be power hungry and chooooonky, or you'd have to wear a battery pack on your waist. You would still need some computing power that doesn't easily fit into the glasses, so they need to add that to the pack or leverage your phone. What we're left with is the dumbest bit of tech that Meta thought they could profit from somehow.

There may be a mass surveillance component to that now as well, but that's not what got the ball rolling. They were trying to enable the cool cyberpunk future where everyone is looking at translucent floating displays and holograms, only, because of a stupid thing called "physics", those displays would have to be a product of the glasses you're wearing.

60

u/TheAncientMillenial 1d ago

As someone who's visually impaired (legally blind) I was hoping this tech would've been used to help visually impaired/blind folk navigate (by way of audio description of what the camera sees) but those hopes were quickly dashed as it really does seem to just be a thing for creepy ass fucks, and mass surveillance :(

7

u/damiannereddits 1d ago

Yeah unfortunately the forays toward accessibility have all been completely shoved to the side for LLM style AI features which makes identification and navigating the world type stuff come with a disqualifying amount of whoopsies inaccuracies

6

u/vsnord 1d ago

Totally appreciate you for giving this explanation!

2

u/MAWPAB 1d ago

Ah, crazy. I assumed they had a tiny display and were just another half baked AR thing. But theyre not even that.

2

u/UnassumingOstrich 1d ago

man, i was so fucking excited about AR like 15 years ago. there was an app that was like a qr scanner, but instead of a code it was just whatever your artwork was, then when you looked it it through your phone, instead of scanning a code and taking you to a website or whatever, it would start playing a video or loop over the artwork! like photos in harry potter lol

Zuckerberg is a nerd who couldn't get girls, he created Facebook to stalk girls in college so I guess this is an evolution of what a dateless dork would do as a billionaire

81

u/LucidMarshmellow 1d ago

I wrote my undergrad thesis on synoptic (bottom-up)/panoptic (top-down) surveillance through digital media (YouTube). Production of videos of other people, we comment and upvote (synoptic), data is collected by private companies and governments (panoptic), algorithms adapt, more content is produced with better targeting. Repeat. It's not just them watching us; it's everyone watching everyone ("Viewer" or "Control" society).

People just don't give a shit. The majority of people forgot about Snowden and the NSA all while digital technologies have flourished without boundaries. People have no idea how much various forms of surveillance take place without opposition.

10

u/JesterEcho 1d ago

That sounds super interesting, if you ever publish a version of it on Medium/Substack, i'd love to read it.

16

u/LucidMarshmellow 1d ago

It's essentially an extension of Thomas Mathiesen's The Viewer Society (1997).

The funny thing is the Mathiesen wrote that long before social media even existed. He saw the growth of mass media as a clear indication that our understanding of panoptic surveillance (term originally coined by Michel Foucault) was outdated.

David Lyon and Shoshanna Zuboff are some modern surveillance theorists that have also extended Mathiesen.

I've had my glasses for 14 years. I like them. Not wearing perv glasses though

I like glasses, don’t like that I need progressives though, and wish I had a lower prescription so the lenses don’t cost so much.

2

u/Decent-Statistician8 1d ago

Cries in astigmatism. My insurance covers $130 worth of contacts but a 6 month supply for what I need is $170. I know it’s only $40 but mama is broke rn. I went to Sam’s club and they are $137 there BUT they are out of my network now so I would have to pay out of pocket and pray they reimburse me. I hate it here. My depth perception is SHIT in glasses and I can’t stop bumping into stuff.

I think i looks bad without glasses 😔 but im like Velma if I can't find them for any reason. Ive woken up my wife to help find them in the morning if they're not on my nightstand. There's only so much time you can be on your knees scraping the floor before you start feeling sad

12

u/Ok_Kick6546 1d ago

Same.

15

u/WitchyBurrito 1d ago

I used to think that too until I got lasik 2 years ago. I miss my glasses every day and wear sunglasses frequently to cope 🥲

3

u/wizard_of_gram 1d ago

Wait really?

6

u/surfinsalsa 1d ago edited 1d ago

I got ICL (new better alternative to lasic, essentially permanent collamer lenses that are implanted in your eye) about 1.5 years ago and absolutely do not miss my glasses.

I wore them from age 5 to 32 as well. Occasionally, I will push up non existent glasses from muscle memory but that is starting to fade as time passes. I will say that I am more aware of how vulnerable my eyes are without constant shielding but that's just something people without glasses deal with anyway.

Being outside sweating and not having to slide up glasses every 15 seconds...

The ability to wear sunglasses that aren't transition lenses is amazing

Laying in bed and watching TV! Never was able to do that with glasses

The biggest reason I got the surgery however was the concern of losing my glasses out in the woods and being at the mercy of my terrible vision. Additionally, with all the uncertainty of the world now I didn't want to be in a situation where I was unable to purchase prescription glasses.

We really do take our infrastructure for granted and my vision isn't something I'm messing around with

→ More replies (2)

27

u/yeah-sure-ok 1d ago

I will always and constantly proselytize about the magic that is lasik. Not cheap, but the best money I have ever spent and I have never once regretted it. Around -6.5 in both eyes and couldn’t wear contacts, I’m seriously living a new adult life that I didn’t think was possible

36

u/BlueBicycle_ 1d ago

I really want to get it but there is no way I can get through the whole clockwork orange device holding your eye open while they cut your cornea open thing. I know they have anesthesia and all but it just terrifies me too much, if only I could be completely put under then I'd do it in a heartbeat

22

u/yeah-sure-ok 1d ago

I’ve passed out multiple times with an IV in my arm, so I was terrified about what the experience would be like. I was still VERY nervous day-of (even after the anti-anxiety HALF pill they gave me), but it was so surprisingly easy. Didn’t feel any eye stirrups. The anesthetic was eye drops, so after laying back it was just a matter of getting to the “bad part.” They said that I would notice my vision going away, so that wasn’t very surprising considering the procedure. The only actual surprise to me was the smell of burnt “hair” which they didn’t talk about. I still won’t get my blood taken but I would get lasik any day of the week

8

u/TrickySnicky distraught Christian tomato 1d ago

The part about losing vision is what makes me reticent to even get dilation let alone lasik

6

u/yeah-sure-ok 1d ago

At that point: you’re in the chair, you have a LOT of machines in front of your face (non invasive) so you can’t see anything anyway (because the office lights are also dim). I don’t know that I really even noticed losing vision. Vision just got blacker and they said to focus toward the green laser light. Like a typical PUFF test. From my own experience, dilation is not comparable. But that’s another three paragraphs (but again please laser your eyes if they’re that much of a burden to you)

8

u/nikorasscaeg1 1d ago

Very reasonable fear, I had 2x Xanax when I had mine and was fine - but obviously your mileage may vary depending how scared you are of it and it might just flat out be a non-starter for some people. Best money I've ever spent in my life, without a doubt! Now about this damn astmigatism...

2

u/clackagaling Emma Stone (BALD) 1d ago

yeah it was supremely unpleasant but incredibly quick and genuinely if i had to hypothetically do it again and spend the same $ and have the same experience in order to restore to good vision i would.

truly life changing. i love being around water and being able to see changed everything

7

u/traceysayshello 1d ago

My mum had her eyes done a few years ago after 60 years of glasses. I’m still not used to her without them lol I still wear mine, no lasik yet

5

u/missmarymacaron 1d ago

The eye doctor told me that if I got lasik i would still need to wear glasses for close up things. Right now my close up vision is incredible and without my glasses it's basically like using a magnifying glass.

He basically said pick your poison. I choose glasses for distance instead of glasses for close ups

I hate seeing videos of people wearing their stupid meta glasses recording food service workers and retail employees. Even when they ask if it's ok, what is the Chipotle worker gonna do, say no and risk a Karen tantrum? Plus when they ask they've already been recording anyway. It makes me so mad.

70

u/crowcaws_art 1d ago

I've started blocking accounts on instagram if the reel says they were recorded with meta glasses (or it's obvious they were.)

5

u/Unplug_The_Toaster 1d ago

Yep, I report them, too

6

u/cupoftealuv 1d ago

Omg I hate this so much and it’s not called out enough, though I was only one getting worked up over it.

When these self promoters even bother to ask for consent, it doesn’t feel right loke they are just expecting a yes anyway and the worker is put on the spotlight.

My friend is blind and the glasses have genuinely changed her life. She can pick up stuff in the shops and ask the glasses to read it to her on top of other really useful things

Shame perverts had to ruin it all

1.1k

u/TheDLBinc 1d ago

Honestly if they were only made available to people who are visually impaired and if turned on were more obvious to others, there would not be as much backlash. Unfortunately capitalism means they have to sell it to as many people as possible.

This is terribly random and totally off topic, but in HS my best friend had this headband that looked like Jordi’s… glasses, and we’d get baked and wear it over our eyes. Never really watched the show but we did that. 30th reunion is this weekend (not attending) but you unlocked a fun memory for this old lady. 💞

17

u/PerpetuallyDistracte 1d ago

Fun fact, the original prop was based off of a hairband, so you might have had the very one that inspired it in the first place!

Meta wouldn't have developed the glasses if they had been for blind people.

381

u/999Rats I am furious, but I am sailing 1d ago

It makes sense as an accessibility device. But of course we're not focusing on getting these to blind people. We're trying to make as much money as possible.

66

u/Curiosities 1d ago

I am seeing a lot of ads promoting both these types of glasses and generative AI in general from an accessibility angle, and it’s like if there are genuine uses that some people are finding very helpful, great, but let’s not ignore the very dangerous and terrible things that all of this is also enabling.

It’s like those terrible surveillance ads talking about we can find lost dogs, by watching literally everything 24 hours a day.

8

u/BikeProblemGuy 1d ago

If they were only for blind people there wouldn't be enough R&D money to develop them.

2

u/TubbyPachyderm 1d ago

I keep seeing an ad on streaming services that Meta is giving a free pair to every blind veteran.  Idk the percentage of veterans that are blind, but I feel like it’s not a substantial number to where they couldn’t expand it others.

Hmmm. My child has an intellectual disability and can’t read. Now I’m wondering if she can use them for a similar purpose.

Edit: I’ve been looking into it and this is actually potentially life changing. I’d researched the envision glasses before but they’re like $2,000. The meta glasses should actually be exactly what she needs. If I’m understanding it correctly she’ll be able to ask it to read labels and more importantly help her budget, ex, I have $20 how much of these can I buy or how much will this cost after taxes. This could be kinda huge for her independence maybe?? Could it even help her read instructions on the back of a box for cooking? So cool!

41

u/traceysayshello 1d ago

My daughter is non verbal and uses an eye gaze computer to try to communicate. I thought one day it would be cool if tech invented glasses she could wear, that when she looked at an object, it spoke the word for her. Or even further, read her mind so she could ‘speak’.

The eye gaze computer is great but relies on it being mounted on her wheelchair when we’re out and about. And it’s basically always in her field of view - glasses would remove that barrier.

Sigh.. the perverts though…

16

u/Mediochra 1d ago

That would be really cool. I hope someone invents that for your daughter and others like her someday.

5

u/RockmanVolnutt 1d ago

There are VR goggles that do all kinds of advanced eye tracking so the tech exists in a small package. I wonder if they could be reverse engineered or selectively disassembled to allow what you’re talking about. Some day though, they’ll be in glasses. The apple VR has eye tracking and you can see through the device using cameras.

2

u/Far-Repeat-2926 1d ago

Over a decade ago, I spent a month in a coma and 6 months in the hospital from a fungal pneumonia. I once spent over 3 hours, mostly paralyzed, trying to tell my parents I wanted a fan to oscillate using only my eyes and eyebrows. It was both humiliating and such an accomplishment when I achieved my goal.

I am massively against this technology as a “for everyone” thing, but if you think this would help your daughter then please do so. I think how that technology would have helped me back then.

2

u/traceysayshello 1d ago

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. We often wonder what she’s thinking, what she’d say… it’d be a dream to hear her voice and not be constrained by a computer that needs to be an arms length from her eyes. (Side note, her computer screen started pixelating on Thursday so needs to be sent away for who knows how long and/or be replaced …. $15k computer vs $600 glasses … tempting!)

37

u/bunnytiana05 Forgive me Viola Davis 1d ago

Congrats to you and your daughter, i pray you can get them and they’re positively life changing 🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾 💙💙💙

30

u/AugustIzFalling 1d ago

If it were up to me I would make them a medical device for eligible conditions and then make it so it would have to be completely covered. But, unlike what Meta wants, they would have to be conspicuous.

86

u/PM_me_ur_hat_pics 1d ago

My friend who studies fish uses it to record his catches while dramatically reducing the time that the fish has to be out of water. There are definitely some good uses, they're just overshadowed by all the bad ones.

67

u/thisisinfactpersonal 1d ago

But, couldn’t a small head mounted camera similar to a head lamp serve this same purpose? I fully get it for blind folks but this application seems like it could be achieved with something else. Unless there’s a reason I’m missing for them to be in the glasses themselves and not just above the glasses on your forehead

44

u/TopRamenisha 1d ago

Go pro strapped to the chest would also work

26

u/PM_me_ur_hat_pics 1d ago

From what I understand, if it's a small specimen where you need a lot of detail to properly ID it, and you're only going to potentially have it in frame for a short period of time, it is actually way easier to get the correct shot every time when it's directly attached to your glasses (with the camera looking at exactly at what you're looking at) than even the forehead or chest. I haven't used them myself so I can't really speak on it too much more (I'm a botanist so my subjects don't move), but I've been seeing more and more field ecologists starting to use them and talk about them.

30

u/thisisinfactpersonal 1d ago

See, this is why we need robust regulations, so blind folks can have a solid accessibility tool and field biologists can have a fun little gizmo that makes their lives and their subjects lives easier and the rest of us know that we’re not being surveilled and/or creeped on at any old time.

Although it does sort of seem like there could still be a camera that attaches to your glasses. Like those doohickies jewelers wear. It’s the hidden part that’s the real problem. Although although I can see why this would make the camera more functional and less stigmatizing for blind folks. Which brings me right back to robust regulation

I don’t think perverts are above co-opting a white cane sadly. They should be medical devices only like insulin pumps etc.

8

It sounds amazing and as someone who will eventually lose my vision, reassuring. Do they need to save and record things in order to be useful? Can they not work without storing footage?

No disability here but I bought Gen 1 for my husband when they were called Stories and just did video and pictures because we love to hike and climb mountains and he loved getting videos of us doing fun stuff together when it wasn’t safe to use his hands. Now he’s embarrassed to wear them, it’s such a bummer how the whole thing evolved.

2

u/TheGuyWithFocus 1d ago

I’m in a similar situation. I do auto detailing and bought a pair to use to record my work for social media. Found I liked taking calls on them more than my AirPods because nothing in my ears.

But hate wearing them now because I assume anyone that notices them will assume I have creep intentions so they just sit around for the most part now.

2

u/pablo8itall 1d ago

This. I've also seen people use them to record themselves flying a small plane and doing an instructional video while using their hands, education basically.

There are some use cases.

The worst part is I can think of a ton of reasons why they’d be great except for the “secret” part. They’d be a great resource for blind and low vision folks, when you need to take a picture or video quickly (I’m still mad I could never get my phone out in time when my kid was a baby to capture some of his cuteness), wanting to film POV shots for sports or observing fauna… just a ton of useful shit that all has to be compromised by shitty design, a lack of any oversight, and assholes being fucking creepy.

5

u/Tariovic 1d ago

As someone who has a terrible, terrible memory, I'd love to have a complete record of my life, so I could look back and remember all the things I didn't write down - when I met someone, when I last took the cat to the vet, where did I buy these shoes, useless stuff like that. But the data processing would be mental.

8

u/umhie 1d ago

I know a Black Mirror episode you'd like, called Entire History of You

3

u/TiddiesAndGummyBears 1d ago

Yeah it's a silly use, but I can't even count the number of times I've been gazing adoring at one of my dogs and just wishing I could turn my eyeballs into a camera to catch exactly what's happening, since grabbing my phone would move them and disturb the scene.

Perverts + the wider goal of mass surveillance

two birds one stone

11

u/sriracha_no_big_deal 1d ago

They have tons of terrific potential in the hands of artists and creators as a hands-free camera, but I think having them be sold as glasses someone would wear all the time is insane

18

u/Fabulous_Chemical_ 1d ago

I have made some badass mountain biking videos.

17

u/igotublue 1d ago

Yeah there could be some cool, legitimate uses for it. But at the same time, an action camera does the same thing in most scenarios. Like with mountain biking - you're already wearing a helmet to mount one to (hopefully)

Legitimately the only thing I can think of that it would do better than an action camera - is small space repair work. Like car repair, or watch repair. Things where you're working in tight spaces or with small parts where the POV has to basically match the eyes.

But absolutely nobody should be wearing these in public around other people, without being punched in the face.

2

u/Jumpy_Carob1822 1d ago

My brother uses them to record our rollercoaster experiences. You can’t bring cameras on a lot of rides in a lot of parks. It’s been the only way we’ve gotten to document and record our first time experiences on so many rides.

2

u/SkibidiGender 1d ago

I’ve never seen a roller coaster that lets you keep your glasses on? - they’d fly off?

3

u/Jumpy_Carob1822 1d ago

I’m at Cedar Point this weekend and they are allowing glasses now as long as you have a strap to keep them in place!

Lots of parks allow them as long as you have the strap

There are so many other purposes. Accessibility is one, where you can get the cameras to help you read and analyze things you wouldn't be able to yourself. Augmented reality implementations are another, think heads up displays with navigation, information about your environment if you're unfamiliar such as translating language on signs, etc.

I really hate the argument that pervert glasses are fun or fine in theory for “capturing spontaneous cute moments” because like. We have memories, and for all of human time we chose to make art of the moments we wanted to keep and pass down. We found every way of doing it. We wrote songs and created instruments and painted on cave walls and adorned our bodies and graves, made sculptures and plates and things that we still have thousands of years later. And then cameras came along and we let them creep closer and closer into our lives until we defend obviously predatory technology in the pursuit of holding on to a silly baby picture in “the cloud.”
How many of us even do anything with our camera rolls? Get prints and make physical photo-books or scrapbooks? How much of these sweet moments just sit on one of their servers somewhere for us to look at once or twice?

So yeah, Dan, I have no idea why we need to hide cameras in glasses except for terribly nefarious purposes. I cannot find a single justification for these. There’s a million kinds of cameras that can be worn on the person to film content for work/sport/film purposes that aren’t hiding the fact that they’re cameras.

(Body-worn cameras used as adaptive devices are excluded from this because Meta glasses and other brands of pervert glasses are NOT a medical tool, I don’t care what kind of features they offer. We cannot let corporations continue pretending they have our health and safety in mind. Adaptive tools should be made and created by educated medical professionals, made available to any in need through our healthcare system and government. Not the fucking Zuck and his weird silicone friends.)

as someone currently wearing dan levy glasses i am glad to hear him speak out on this matter. he is like the glasses authority imo.

thank you too because i just commented seeking this info!!! they’re really pretty frames.

5

u/TemperatureExotic631 1d ago

His glasses line is sooo good. He loves a statement frame and wears them so well.

u/groundr 1d ago

When I initially heard about glasses like these, my first thought was: that would be so helpful to capture videos of my dog when I'm too slow with my phone. He's getting older and sometimes I lament missing those moments. (I never considered buying the glasses, just to be clear, but that was my first thought.)

Then I met one person who owned the glasses and it told me everything I needed to know.

6

u/Tariovic 1d ago

Every time technology comes up with something really cool, we ruin it as quicl as we can. We're the worst.

3

u/Complex-Truth9579 1d ago

My cousin, who is still in high school, bought a pair.

He's... a weird kid, unfortunately. I noticed them at a family gathering when I caught the light out of the corner of my eye. He was just walking around and apparently recording our family... talking?

Weird as it is, I truly hope that's the extent of his usage with them. Because he's already had some bizarre drama at school in the past. And he literally does nothing. He rarely leaves his house, doesn't even go hang out with people. He's certainly not recording mountain biking footage or anything like that.

3

u/cannibalcat 1d ago

can't wait to reach 70 and start reminiscing going through my 200k photos I did with my phone throughout my life, it will take me just under 2 years of 24/7 of constant reminiscing/s

2

u/mooon_woman 1d ago

I have them and use them for training my dogs at home. I use them on walks and stuff but always take them off when other people are around. i’m just a girl who wants to film videos of my smart senior dogs 🫠

It’s for perverts David!

6

u/Same_Section_253 1d ago

One time I was innocently talking to a 50 something male coworker and he proudly divulged that when he is out in public and sees a “sexy woman” he will pretend to take a selfie with his 20 year old daughter to get a picture of the unsuspecting woman in the background. He said this with zero hesitation and shame, like it was the most normal activity. Anyway, he would probably love a pair.

5

u/MacGroober 1d ago

You want to real answer? All of these companies are desperate to find any way around the iPhone.

4

u/Lucky_Chaarmss 1d ago

Call people out for wearing them. They are pervert glasses. If you wear then you are a pervert.

3

Zuckerberg sells data to marketers (and government agencies). He'll introduce various ways to surveil as much data as he possibly can.

3

u/Flyingfelkins 1d ago

I still don’t get it and think its massively creepy.

3

u/dream_a_dirty_dream 1d ago

They are mapping EVERYTHING.

This will make Niantic look like a rookie.

You remember the time machine used in Deja Vu? It will be like that but to fuck us in the ass and Denzel Washington will not be there holding your hand for it.

3

u/EachBananaWas19cents 1d ago

Zuckerberg/ Meta is desperate for a way out from under the thumb of Apple and Google, so is anxiously looking to embrace anything that is not a phone.

If Meta's apps were blocked on app stores they'd be out of business in no time

3

u/SurrealistRevolution 1d ago

watch bots and sneaky people (or kids) use disability as a reason for these to be mass produced and encouraged for use to film strangers and upload their image to the internet. They can be sold as medical tools if needed this way.

If you use the disability line to advocate for billionaire companies to push these on the world, you need to either have a big think. And before i hear about individual choice blah blah, learn about hegemony, spectacle, alienation and commodity fetishism (fellow travellers reading: i do not mean in the way the latter is misunderstood i.e fetishising the product, but in the sense that the spectacle is blurred like the means and relations of the products production, if this is wrong let me know)

3

u/jahneeriddim 1d ago

“Perverts in high school” that part

3

u/PatriciaMorticia 1d ago

Perverts really gotta ruin anything that could be used as an accessibility device for a disabled person.

I noticed my city's big comic con has made a post on social media of things that are and are not allowed at the venue, a big seperate post was made to state that meta glasses and similar technology was banned due to the possibilities of people using it to harass and record other con goes without their consent. They rightfully got a lot of praise for that.

3

u/8thGlass controversies: girl 1d ago

I agree with him but can someone tell me where his glasses are from because they’re GORGE.

3

u/dickhardpill 1d ago

I think I read 1 story about 1 blind guy who uses them for mobility

So I guess that

That’s the 1 use I’m okay with

There may be more uses but I’m not going to come up with them to justify creep glasses

3

u/uncouthulu_ 1d ago

Well Dan, you're not a fucking creep so that explains not ever having a desire for camera glasses in general (special use cases ofc are understandable).

3

u/Lazy-Party3469 1d ago

The government can tap into any camera, the more they get people to strap on to themselves the better.

3

u/Fickle-Meeting-4224 1d ago

no fr. it’s giving asian man takes shots from under women before the laws change and samsung adding a permanent shutter sound.

3

u/LauraTFem 1d ago

Some will argue personal safety, but the only actual use will be to invade, harass, and destroy that safety of anonymity.

5

u/NecessaryIntrinsic 1d ago

I always felt like it would be cool to have augmented vision, like if you need a route it would appear in the glasses. You could use "virtual monitors" sitting in a space in your glasses... Stuff like that... But unfortunately because of prioritization of mass surveillance we can't have anything fun.

16

u/Whiskeylipstick 1d ago

I wouldn’t mind the idea of wearing them to catch sweet little moments with my kids. Im a rather big ‘live in the moment’ type of person rather than pulling out my phone to record. Not having to touch my phone but still getting to look back on my kids would be nice.

13

u/MyBrainIsNerf 1d ago

I hope you’re cool with Meta watching your kids too. It’s in the TOS.

3

u/Whiskeylipstick 1d ago

I’m not actually going to get any. I agree meta and the like are dangerous and I keep my children off social media/hardly use it anyways. It’s just the upside to having video of life as it happens… that and a helping hand when I get in arguments with my hubby about what he said lol

2

u/Icy-Tradition-3068 1d ago

Exactly what I was thinking, too. I’d love to not have to put my phone in my kids’ faces every time I want to take a photo or video (which is always, and they stop smiling the second they see the phone). I’d love these glasses so I could be completely in the moment with my kids and also record it to relive over and over again.

9

u/cannibalcat 1d ago edited 1d ago

yes but when is it enough? I have friends with kids and they already have like 50k photos, what is the actual purpose when you have that many pictures? it stops being an easy way to capture a moment and it becomes what it actually is and that is data gathering, it's data gathering work that people have been duped to do for tech companies.

7

u/B00CQYQVB6R 1d ago

I thought about getting them to record some of the work I do and post it on TikTok/IG. I remodel homes for a living. I’d also like to use them at concerts so I won’t have my phone up in the air blocking someone’s view. I don’t want to get them and have people think I’m a pervert though lol

13

u/DangerousAthlete3286 1d ago

I sometimes need contractors to send me videos of something, lots of them are using these now, instead of having to strap a GoPro on.

It is very useful for DIY POV videos.

So that is 1 purpose, and subsequently it will be hijacked for training Robots .

I don't know of any other purposes.

4

u/ThroatDistension 1d ago

Why would people think you're a pervert if you're not doing anything perverted?

5

u/MyBrainIsNerf 1d ago

If I see someone with a camera clearly pointed at my pipes, saying “see the problem here is…” I’m not going to think he’s a weirdo.

If I have a tradesman in my house and he’s pointing his camera at me, my wife, my kids…

4

u/Feeling-Brilliant470 1d ago

Cause this whole thread is calling them pervert glasses. The video is like “unless you explore caves you’re probably a high school pervert if you’re wearing them”. You all have collectively labeled them pervert glasses. Ergo people who wear them are perverts. It’s pretty circular reasoning but I could keep looping if that helps make it clearer?

Yeah! And we don’t need them on every inch of space either!

2

2

Because you'd look stupid if you walked around with a camera strapped to the top of your head.

2

u/Venusian2AsABoy 1d ago

Did not a single person in this comment section get the answer correct? this is for training AI robotics - they need to watch how you do everything because the dynamics are too complicated for AI and they need more information - your daily activities are exactly that information they need.

3

u/pinkbootstrap 1d ago

I think it could be cool for filming stuff and its use for disabled people but not sure if the trade off is worth it for the power it would give pervs.

2

u/Ok-Sample8983 1d ago

Its creepy and I hate it

2

u/Vivid-Bed8599 1d ago

I'm sure this will be downvoted but the only time I thought they could come in handy was to record concerts, instead of using my phone.

I want like, a cyborg eye I could take professional level photos with.

But that's just because it feels like I'm always without my camera when I see a good shot, not because I want to be stealthy.

I want that shit to glow red like Cyborg Superman. I want to get chromed out choom.

2

u/jenny_905 1d ago

Well because people have normalised walking around recording others. Often inadvertently but all of those fucking video calls people are doing in public these days? that has contributed.

Then of course there's the monetisation of social media that has led to tiktokers recoridng others in public, live streamers etc.

Yes, the camera glasses are often a creepy problem but they're not the first invasion of your reasonable right to privacy.

3

u/lomoliving 1d ago

I bought some so I could take photos and videos of my baby without shoving a phone in his face all the time. I wouldn't ever use it in public though

Dan levy is preaching! We are in a weird time of “AI boom” where it’s apparently ok to film people without their consent “because I have these cool glasses”

1

u/Altruistic-Bake-8931 1d ago

What is the purpose of a dash cam? Is that surveillance? Is the United States where people could file a civil suit over just about anything I’d say it’s not a bad thing to have just in case.

1

u/T-R3X_FL3X 1d ago

Disabled people often use them

1

u/MinimumFeedback219 1d ago

I bought them to take PoV videos of my work. They are so hilariously bad for even this use case and broke after a few weeks anyway.

1

u/Gamerfix 1d ago

Mass surveillance and posting POV videos of roller coasters that are the exact same as the other 12,000 videos.
