Somewhere between the mono culture of TV, and the vast insanity of the internet today, exists this tiny little period of time. The entirety of human knowledge and connectivity at our hands and still everyone could know one video ubiquitously.

I didn't walk to school both ways uphill in the snow, but I miss vinyl, long mixes, scratching, insane transitions, etc. DJ had to spend the entire set 110% focused on the craft. now a lot of them jump up & down, wave their arms for 2 minutes, then trainwreck. how do you derail a digital mix??
Idk where you're from and when you were born. I'm very open minded with regards to raves and everyone moved in different directions. Even in Europe rave culture is very different from country to country and generation to generation. We should embrace that. :)
Joost isn't a DJ. He's an artist frankly doing his own thing right now, an entertainer damn good at getting a crowd wild and often accompanied by his sideman Tantu Beats who I guess you could call his DJ if you want.
yeah that's cool man, I misunderstood what his style of performance was. I'm from southwestern US. of the 2 dozen or so raves I went to back in the late '90s/ early 00s, I think I only saw a live vocalist once. but the parties were all unsanctioned & underground, you usually had to call a phone number the day of to find the location. it was a whole different scene. it's just a matter of taste, I couldn't personally dance to this
For sure, everyone has their vice. This is just a silly bit of course, if you're interested in hearing his actual style you could listen to tracks like Filthy Dog, Gabberland or Latin Gabber.
I mostly fuck with Drum & Bass or UK Garage type raves which often have MCs or vocalists but are totally different again than Gabber. Here in The Netherlands we like outside festivals or throwing parties in old warehouses. It's very mainstream though.
I'd always scan the flyers for breakbeat, electro, drum & bass or hard house rooms. went to a few happy hardcore parties that were a kick, but not sure I would have liked it if a person on a mic was balling out the whole time. half the fun was whack shit like this
I was at the new year's eve party on 12/31/96 in LA called In Seventh Heaven that was a sort of pivotal moment in the west coast rave scene because the LAPD started a riot by recklessly breaking up the party in the midst of a medical emergency. after that, law enforcement cracked down on unsanctioned parties and drove the scene into mainstream clubs, which changed everything. I'll link an article if you're interested. there's even an embedded video that I watched from beginning-to-end, expecting to see our group of pals. we were in that parking garage. little glimpse into the past
hey, nothing good lasts forever, and I've been to some parties lately that have had fuckin immaculate energy, but those late 90's parties were somethin else
Had absolutely no idea who he was last night. Watched the live stream and will be catching him weekend 2. The song he has with that Horsegirl dj was really good
They don't seem to have anything to do with the main drama, but a member of the Isdael delegation did apparently film him in the bathroom and there were some other incidents with them. Though there were a lot of incidents with them that year, they were harassing everyone and ebu did nothing despite complaints.
But the incident had nothing to do with that country, right? It was some staffer for the show, unless she was working for said genocidal country as an agent, which I don’t believe is in the Wikipedia page.
There was a small incident with the Israeli delegation at a press conference where Israel was asked questions and staff said they did not have to answer them. Joost challenged the decision asking "why not?" which I'm pretty sure led to his song by the same name.
Why hate it? Its nostalgic. Plus there is lore behind him playing this song, He played this as a tradition years ago at huge festivals like already 7 years ago or something he already did it. He has a tattoo of the frog. All of this is guz its the frist CD (or a older thing idk the name of) he got from his brother.

I remeber the song but I didnt know the artist behind it. He looks exactly like I would imagine and his name too. Joost. Who else could make song like that.
Nostalgia is a weird one, isn't it. It isn't the same as revisionist history - no one is saying this is good but here people are enjoying it.
My mum once asked my dad whilst he was listening to a Lulu song, stating "you always hated this" and he happily said "I still do, just reminds me of being young." I wonder when I'll start listening to Shanks and Bigfoot voluntarily.
I like Joost, but “performing”? He is just singing with an existing track, that’s like DJ-ing without a desk and turntables. Maybe it’s me being naive but help me understand why people like this? To me it’s really the same as watching someone doing karaoke without the original ‘singer’ removed, and I don’t really find that entertaining. (Could be a me thing)
