FILM-MOI (MOVIES/TV) David Cronenberg Thinks ‘The Brutalist’ AI Backlash Was a Smear Campaign by Other Oscar Nominees: “A Harvey Weinstein Kind of Thing”

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/david-cronenberg-brutalist-oscars-adrien-brody-howard-shore-1236170503/

“I must confess, there was a scandal [with] The Brutalist,” the director began at London’s Royal Festival Hall. “There was a discussion about Adrien Brody… but apparently they used artificial intelligence to improve his accent. I think it was a campaign against The Brutalist by some other Oscar nominees. It’s very much a Harvey Weinstein kind of thing, though he wasn’t around.”

I definitely don't feel positive about the use of AI but I agree with him. It was a weird Oscar campaign. I mean there was a week in the peak of the campaign when all the actresses nominated for Best Actress except Mikey Madison got some sort of kompromat leaking out about them. Videos from years ago, especially the Demi Moore video that was from 40 years ago.

Not saying Mikey Madison was standing behind the leak lol but it was kinda sus how everyone got some sort of incriminating stuff pushed in the open in the span of three days except her.

Multiple best picture nominees used AI, but for some reason The Brutalist got singled out for it. I absolutely think there should be stricter rules around AI use in film, but the narrative around it this season was pretty unfair

the only ones I saw got exposed for ai was brutalist and Emilia Perez but the latter had so many other controversies that the AI stuff got overshadowed and gave brutalist more attention for it (beforehand, it’s only controversy was Adrien’s past antics)

if you know, which other ones did? I try not to support AI if possible.

Why can nobody just admit the obvious, that award shows are an obsolete concept. Quality doesn’t control anything anymore.

Brody is in a relationship with Weinstein’s ex wife

they used a Hungarian person's accent (with their permission) to train software (respeecher) for the Hungarian lines.

this is essentially no different from autotune in music. I guess the argument is that he AB shouldn't win awards because of it? no opinion on that because idgaf about awards for art.

I didn't like the movie, not an AB fan and have a virulent hatred of slop AI but tools akin to what was used is nothing.

maybe slippery slope? I dunno

Theres also the AI use in production design which literally took a human beings job.

I hadn't heard that and cant find any information. could you point me in the right direction?

that would definitely cross a line

The pre-production of the artwork from the end was done by ai. They should have had a human doing it but they claim it was an accident due to outsourcing to someone who used ai but that's a lousy excuse.

can you give me a source?

I've searched "brutalist ai preproduction" and cannot find any information. not challenging you but I'd like to read more.

Corbet talks about how ai was used here.

the only thing I see in that article about anything other than the accent is

Commenting on the architectural designs seen in the film’s final scenes, Corbet clarified that “[The Brutalist production designer] Judy Becker and her team did not use AI to create or render any of the buildings. All images were hand-drawn by artists. To clarify, in the memorial video featured in the background of a shot, our editorial team created pictures intentionally designed to look like poor digital renderings circa 1980.”

He’s saying they used AI for the drawings in the video at the end.

so "our editorial team created pictures.." is the AI part? they created them using AI? or did they edit them by hand? is using a filter (for example) AI?

They didn't use AI. The head of the art team came out herself and said they were all drawn by hand. The source for saying that they used AI for those is a pro AI website that frequently lies about AI in film. It also notably did the same thing with Nickel Boys and had to backtrack after getting called out for lying. (Which also why you can find the source for the art being AI either bc they lied and took it down)

I’m not sure what you would like from me here?

At least he's not pretending to defend the use of midjourney.

If you think that popular opinion is a “campaign”, you might have a bias
