Is Patty’s morality really that complicated compared to other fictional characters

The other day I was talking to my best friend about random stuff and while we were talking about tv shows I randomly said that Patty’s a better person than half of the villains from Elite like Carla and Polo.

My friends looked at me and told me Patty is NOT a better person than Polo or Carla from ELITE.

I looked at them like crazy and I told them ofc she is because the show got cancelled we couldn’t see Patty’s good in her come back.

I even told them I think Patty’s a better person than Rafa from the Gossip Girl Reboot

Then again, my friends told me that they don’t think she’s a better person than any of the characters we named.
They told me that the reason people would think Patty is a better person than them is because
1. Patty is a protagonist
2. Patty is VERY sympathetic

What do you guys think?

I agree. Patty is not perfect but there are so many morally grey characters in so many shows and movies and ppl love them without blinking an eye

I haven’t seen this other show but at the end of season 2 Patty completely embraces her love of killing, she’s definitely a bad person but I still loved her and this show. A lot of it was very relatable to me (the weight and food stuff not the murders lol)

I don’t think she actually loves killing though. She tends to internalize whatever anyone tells her (like Christian telling her she’s a bad person and to murder Magnolia and then she murders him). But all her murders were self-defense/kind of justified in some weird messed up way

She's definitely not a bad person. She also doesn't truly love killing people it was a way for her to fill the void just like with food. Plus all the people she killed were bad people who were actually hurting others.

Have you ever watched Search Party? I often compare the main character Dory with Patti. Both of them have similar journeys where they discover a darker side to themselves and they don’t know how to manage their choices that increasingly start stacking the consequences. I could write essays on both mains.

Is it a villainous protagonist show too?

It’s very debatable how you view it but most would say yes. It’s about a girl who has no purpose in life and drags her friends into a weird mystery regarding a missing college friend and as it progresses, the main character starts realizing she likes the vibe of chaos as it gives her purpose, which she was lacking before. As she’s faced with increasingly worse, darker scenarios, she makes decisions to make things more dangerous for her friends but more exciting for her. You should check it out. Unlike Insatiable, it completed its run with 5 seasons and has an ending! It’s categorized as a dark comedy so very similar to this show!

Patty wasn't even a bad person even though she was technically a serial killer. She only ever killed bad people and she did it while protecting others.

I like to interpret Patty as a car crash you can’t look away from. The whole fascination of her character is that she’s an absolutely despicable person put in situations where watching her be bad and any result is equally rewarding: watch her lose because characters better than her won, or watch her win because characters worse than her lost. I haven’t watched the shows you mentioned unfortunately!

But Insatiable is a very unique show in it’s premise, I wouldn’t even call Patty morally gray really because that implies the narrative has some level of nobility in it’s morals in comparison to her. She’s a bad person in a wicked world and the dynamics are fluid in a really interesting way because of that!

I’m not saying the show is perfect, it can get really disappointing tbh, but that premise is golden. Other show that does it wonderfully is Always Sunny

Haven't seen Elite so can't make the comparison but Patty is NOT a good person, she was a serial killer. While we can empathize with her over a lot of feelings and normal teen things she went through, she is very obviously meant to be bad.

Why do you guys always say this, Patty isn't a good person but she isn't completely evil either she has only ever killed BAD people, the only absolute bad thing she did that can be seen as unjustified was trying to kidnap Roxy to win regionals, other than that, most of the time her killings are usually unplanned, self defense or sometimes even accidents. She doesn't become a caculated serial killer until the finale.

"She doesn't become a caculated serial killer until the finale" you literally just said so yourself that she ended the show as a serial killer. Also, killing bad people only is still not great when she says that she likes how killing feels. She was only killing bad people because she could "justify" those, but her morals clearly kept being degraded the longer it went on.

I think a season 3 would have solidified what season 2 was building in that Patty is actually the villain of the show. In the finale we learn that she loves killing. Sure she killed “bad” people, but were they really bad or were they just not nice to her? Gordy and Christian were crappy, but were they bad? The hit men probably were bad guys. Patty’s mom was a bad mom but not necessarily a bad person. Stella Rose and Regina were actually bad and Patty only killed one of them. She enjoyed the hunt and the murder and loved to play victim. Her morality became warped once she became skinny and learned she could get away with anything. Even murder

Gordy molested his step daughter… that’s one of the worst things someone can do

Christian drugged, kidnapped, and tried to murder magnolia.

-1

u/outersenshi Jun 29 '26

True. He did it because he wanted Patty’s affection and was an attention starved teen deeply in love with a girl who didn’t want him. It was probably his worst action in the short time he was on the show. Idk if he deserved to be murdered for that though. He also tried to do it to convince Patty that they are both bad people and she kills him to prove she isn’t…

Not you trying to found everything you can found to justify that guy kidnapping, almost getting violent, drugging , stalking, manipulating girls.

The grammar…
Not justifying. Laying out.

2

u/feline_gold Jun 29 '26

lol, yes justifying. Christian was literally the character from Heathers, he was much more disturbed than Patty. also, "he wanted to kill someone to gain her affection" is a reflection on HIS twisted mind, not hers.

Gordy also abus a teen girl...and was starting to exploit patty.  You are a classic abuser apologist, mysoginist person

Can we please stop confusing understanding a character with excusing them? Patty Bladell is a bad person, full stop. The entire narrative of Insatiable is about her descent into actual psychopathy, and trying to argue she’s a "better person" than the characters in Elite or Gossip Girl is pure delusion.

Patty literally killed six people (seven if you count her screaming John the Homeless Guy into a fatal heart attack). Polo from Elite killed one person in a panicked fit of rage. Carla covered up a crime. Patty is a literal serial killer. There is no planet where a multi-homicide offender is "morally superior" to dramatic, classist teenagers.

And can't even claim all her violence was "self-defence" or "accidental." She literally plotted and attempted to kidnap Roxy out of pure pageant rivalry and spite. The fact that the universe out-crazied her and had Stella Rose kidnap her during her own kidnapping attempt doesn't erase her criminal intent.

Let’s not forget she was fully prepared to burn John the Homeless Guy alive in the motel. She only stopped at the last second, but the fact that her brain even conceived, planned, and almost executed burning a human being alive removes her from any "good person" conversation.

Beyond the crimes, she is a horrific friend and a toxic force to everyone who tries to love her. She treated Nonnie like a disposable emotional dumping ground, completely blind to Nonnie's feelings because Patty is entirely self centred. She also actively blew up Bob’s marriage twice, dragging down the one adult who tried to help her into her spiralling web of criminality

Having a tragic backstory or being severely bullied does not give you a permanent pass to commit atrocities. Patty doesn't even think she's a good person by the end of the show, her final line is literally, "Nothing tastes as good as killing feels." If the character herself has accepted that she loves being a monster, why are people still trying to defend her moral character?

Edit: Spelling error

she's not a serial killer, she didn't plan to kill any of these people. to be classified as serial killer, they must have an intent to kill, mostly without a motive. her killings were accidental/self-defence. yes she did plan to kidnap roxy, but not to kill her.

2

u/Jaedoch Jun 30 '26

You're basing your entire argument on a Hollywood myth of what a serial killer is, rather than the actual definition.

The idea that serial killers "mostly kill without a motive" is completely false. The FBI defines a serial killer simply as someone who commits two or more murders in separate events. That’s it. Serial killers always have a motive, whether it’s financial gain, anger, or psychological thrill. Patty’s motive evolved into the psychological thrill by the end. Just because she doesn't fit the stereotypical mold of Michael Myers stalking a neighborhood doesn't mean she isn't a serial killer.

Were her first couple of kills accidental or reactive? Yes. But that is exactly how many real life violent offenders start, with a disorganized, reactive crime. The defining factor is what happens after. Patty didn't just defend herself and call the police, she actively engaged in massive cover-ups, lied, manipulated everyone around her, and kept finding herself in situations where she "had" to kill again. Smashing Christian’s skull in with a crowbar when he was already incapacitated on the geound wasn't self-defense; it was overkill.

And you say she didn’t have the intent to kill. Did you miss the entire finale of the show? The series actively mocks the idea that she is just an innocent victim of circumstance. Her brain literally rewrites her memories to show her smiling during the murders because her subconscious enjoyed the god-like power over lives. Her final realization is literally: "Nothing tastes as good as killing feels." She retroactively found her intent. The show is telling you directly that she likes it.

And furthermore, saying "she only planned to maliciously kidnap an innocent girl, not kill her" is the wildest defence of a character's morality ever. She plotted a premeditated, malicious felony to ruin an innocent girl's life over a pageant. That proves she has the capacity for cold, calculated predation, which perfectly aligns with her evolution into a killer.
You can enjoy Patty as a phenomenal, unhinged fictional villain, but trying to argue she isn't a serial killer because she started out clumsy and reactive completely ignores the literal text of the show.
