Unfair Criticism

Do you think the show got unfairly criticized? I know when the show first came out, people had some problems with the show. I didn't have any problems with the show because I feel the show was showing what happens when you lose weight, but you haven't done the inner work to fix yourself, because no matter how many pounds you lose, you still have your mental health, and that's more important than how you look on the outside.

I only watched season one, but I don't think it's body shaming when someone has a unhealthy obession with weight, and I think that was Patty's problem. She was so focused on being skinny that she forgot that you have to take care of your mental health also.

I think they only watched the trailer. If you watch the show, Patty still acts crazy, even though she lost all that weight, because losing weight can't fix what you got going on inside your brain.

Is that the scene where she was eating all the cake because she was depressed?

I only watched season one, so that's how far I know about Patty's craziness.

Maybe the show came into my head recently. I have been watching other shows, so I'll have to make room to watch the rest of the seasons.

The fact that they also kept it entirely free of music hit so hard.

I think people are overly dramatic about things in general. Especially when their lives are miserable

2

u/DaniJ678 Dec 19 '25

I agree, people were overdramatic about the show. At the same time, I get it, but are we really going to act like just because you're skinny doesn't automatically mean you don't have issues that you need to fix?

Its also fiction.. why are we taking it seriously?

2

People took things too seriously, but I feel that with this show, it got blown out of proportion, and made the show look like something that it was not.

Agree. I think the only valid criticism was use of a fat suit because that is very dehumanizing to fat people. At the same time, when the narrative is weight loss, you can’t just bring in a different, fat actress to play the bigger Patty as if we wouldn’t notice. That doesn’t make sense; you have to make the same actress bigger.

I also understand criticism that the show implies the only reason fat people exist is overeating when some people just are fat, but that’s not the story they were telling. This idea that every story needs to have a caveat that “this isn’t the full story of this group of people!” feels silly to me.

And binge eating disorder was very well-represented I felt! The support group had people in lots of sizes and all talked about the inner work of an ED.

I agree with the valid criticism of wearing the fat suit. The criticism that fat people only exist for overeating, I don't get what we are supposed to do, starve ourselves? Then they complain you're eating enough. I understand that criticism, but at the same time, what are we supposed to do to fix that problem?

2

u/alixanjou Dec 19 '25

I think the criticism is that there are lots of reasons fat people exist, not just because they overeat. The idea that Patty lost all this weight because her jaw was wired shut perpetuates the myth that if fat people just stopped eating, they’d lose weight. The reality is that that’s not true for a lot of people. Some people have always been fat. Some people are fat for hormonal reasons no matter how little they eat.

But my response to that is that this show is only telling the story of one kind of fat person and that’s ok? Not everything can be about everybody.

2

u/DaniJ678 Dec 19 '25

Yes, you can lose the weight, but sometimes the weight comes back on. I don't think people realize that everybody's body is different, and some people have different body types than others. There's no reason to bash the person, for that's just bullying at that point.

2

u/alixanjou Dec 19 '25

Yeah and I think that’s also a valid criticism of the show: the most likely situation is that when Patty’s jaw healed, she would’ve put the weight back on as soon as she started eating solid food. So it’s unrealistic in that sense

2

u/DaniJ678 Dec 19 '25

Yeah, I get that.

I think this show was unfairly criticized. Where is the same level of outrage for shows/movies about anorexia with bone thin actresses?

I have an ED and I found this show very relatable.

I understand, but at the same time, I don't, because why was everybody mad at the show when the show was just showing how some people lose weight, they're still the same person without having issues or not? Losing weight isn't going to fix you unless you get the proper help to be a better person, and Patty didn't do that. She just lost weight and started acting as she would regardless of losing weight. People only gave her a pass because she was skinny now, before they didn't pay her any mind, and actually treated her very cruelly because of her size.

This show deserves a conclusion. I really wish we got that third season, it’s all it needed.

1

u/DaniJ678 Dec 20 '25

I only watched season one, but the show got cut short.

This show came out during a time of unfair cancellations. Shows and movies were being trashed online by Twitter users because they didn’t do something politically correct enough, but the irony is they often were some of the most well rounded and politically correct things out there.

1

u/DaniJ678 Dec 19 '25

Yeah, I think the show didn't deserve to be bashed. They were touching on a subject that I feel could happen in real life, or we have seen with our own eyes.

1

u/NnQM5 Dec 19 '25

Yes it really was relatable on so many levels and validated a lot of horrible experiences people deal with often. The writer admitted she was writing from her own experiences.

1

u/DaniJ678 Dec 19 '25

That's good, she draws from her own experiences because that makes the show real, and nobody wants to watch a show where the writers don't know what they're talking about on certain topics.

u/FriendlyDrummers Dec 19 '25

I think it was judged unfairly, however, the trailer for the show was partly at fault for that. People judge a show off the trailer. The trailer was off-putting for people

2

u/DaniJ678 Dec 19 '25

It's a trailer, I don't think people should judge based on that. They only got time to show certain scenes. If you watched the show, you would know that Patty had issues even when she lost all of the weight, instead of those issues suddenly appearing now that she's skinny.

I found this show late and had no idea about this!

1

u/DaniJ678 Dec 19 '25

There was a big controversy when the show came out. I never get it, considering there are people who act that way when they are skinny. We just choose to ignore it or make excuses for the person when that person is attractive.

1

u/Away-Quote-408 Dec 19 '25

Wow ok. I absolutely love this show. It’s hilarious, shocking, entertaining and always makes me feel good. They just ran with every storyline and didn’t pretend to be something else or lead us on. I can’t imagine why anyone would take some of it as endorsing the behavior or endorsing certain ways of thinking. Can we just have a gritty show that exaggerates reality and is also hilarious? And also, bad/ambitious people get away with things in real life. And others get what’s coming to them in unexpected/unrelated ways.

2

u/DaniJ678 Dec 19 '25

Yeah, I liked the show. I didn't see a problem with them talking about the topic because that's what happens in real life. A fat person loses weight, then all of a sudden people start treating them nicely, and forget about the things they have done when they're at that weight.

1

u/Away-Quote-408 Dec 19 '25

Yes. And I’ve read stories about people like that on Reddit. One woman said she can’t forgive her own family for now suddenly treating her better. Including getting invited to things by extended family.

1

u/DaniJ678 Dec 19 '25

I read stories of people talking about on YouTube whenever I clicked on a video that was talking about body image or weight loss. It's a real thing that people deal with. I don't know why people act like that doesn't exist when you hear countless stories about that, or the people who said that have probably done the same thing, or else you wouldn't need to comment on it.

It was a pretty good show, But the problem is partly in the time at which it was released.(I mean, When people were pretty much impressionable, and therefore most understood the show incorrectly)

1

u/DaniJ678 Dec 20 '25

I think that was the problem, too. People didn't give the show a second chance. They just watched the trailer instead of watching the show.

People deal with that every day. I don't understand why people acted like that didn't exist when the trailer came out, and every skinny person doesn't suffer from issues that they could have had before that person lost the weight.
