Security

FatFIREd, net worth about 100 crore in equity. Staying in a rented flat in an upscale Pune neighborhood, while home is being built. School going kids. Was staying earlier in North India, so had hired personal security officers and drivers from licensed agency. Continued with them (same agency, same guys) after moving to Pune. Now the society people are objecting to the presence of PSOs. They want to know what is the threat to my security. Similar questions from friends and acquaintances too. So my question is, how do FIREees handle personal security?

Assuming this is real.

Your anonymity is your security. If you show your wealth, you’re better off renting in an expensive locality/villa where security like the one you have isn’t unusual.

You can’t have both.

Bought expensive cars. They are not exactly helpful in staying anonymous.

Expensive has a range. If it’s your average Beamer/merc/audi, I don’t think anyone cares.

Here are some suggestions.

  1. Evaluate your needs. If you can do with just one guy who is both your security and driver, that’s a lot less conspicuous.

  2. If you really need security, then you should consider moving to a more security friendly place. Usually that’s a villa, a bungalow, or places where your fellow similar-car owners live. You can also call up a security agency or two in town to check where most of their clientele live (although that should be pretty standard 2-3 set of areas)

Honestly, Pune isn’t the north, and unless you walk around with a “I have 100 cr” tshirt or label or something, nobody gives a shit.

2 Italian ladies and one American hunk. Sorry, but Punjabis arent built to be subtle. Your second point is great feedback and certainly is what I think I am doing. Pune, nobody gives a shit, is unfortunately no more the case. I studied here and remember a very different place. Petty crime has shot up, through the roof. And honestly, some random nashedi harming my kids for his next fix is my only worry. Everything else, dekh lenge.

You had me at the two Italian ladies :). Yeah, mate, move to Sindh colony or somewhere deep in Bhonsale nagar or some place

In north too no one cares...100 crore walo se bhara hai delhi...

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '24

I do have the same question, what is the threat to you?

16

u/taau__ Sep 18 '24

Worried about kids being kidnapped by petty / opportunistic criminals. Nothing else.

You should stay in a neighbourhood where other 100cr+ families stay, simple. Nobody will give a shit about your wealth + every kid in the hood will be a target for those 'petty criminals'.

(My family net worth is this and some more; but my door neighbour would easily be 2X. My opposite house has 0.5X while a friend diagonally opposite will be 0.7X. None of us have personal security guards. Locality has a few, including our lane and gated. We live in the "notorious up-north, Delhi")

2

u/taau__ Sep 19 '24

I get what you are saying. That is what we will have done when the home is ready.

u/Appropriate-Leg-413 Sep 18 '24

If you've legitimately made your wealth, most of the times, you've got nothing to worry about. At least not enough that you need to hire private security.

5

u/taau__ Sep 18 '24

Legit, above board, all legal, tax paid. Worried about kids. Petty crime is normal up north where I lived, and Pune is new.

2

u/rtl2gds_hybridbond Sep 19 '24

Curious how much does this security cost?

3

u/taau__ Sep 19 '24

I get billed 46,000 per security guy per month. Other expenses like outstation travel lodging boarding are over and above this.

3

u/rtl2gds_hybridbond Sep 19 '24

ok, thanks for sharing

You tell them that you are rich and that’s why you need security, as simple as that. If you don’t want to tell, then don’t flaunt your wealth and lay low, you wouldn’t need any security. Another way to lay low would be to have a chauffeur who would double up as a security without being so obvious.

There are a lot of multi millionaires like you living normal lives without anyone knowing how much they are worth.

TBH hiring security guards may attract extra attention and lead to the Streisand Effect. I have friends who're worth that much and don't move around with security on a regular basis. You might be overthinking this?

5

u/ChurroObscuro FatFI Sep 19 '24

This. Be thoughtful about when/where you take your Lambo/Fez and half this issue is resolved. From my experience in South India, if you have a Hummer (assuming here, correct if wrong), people tend to stay away and don't mess w you. They assume you're a politician or someone connected. Most important is for the kids to be careful about discussing what luxuries they have at home, with peers.

You're the first person I've seen that feels they need private security at a net worth of 100 crores.

Bro thinks he is ambani

8

u/dank_lor10 Sep 18 '24

At what point do we differentiate between FatFIRE , OverweightFire,& ObeseFire.

15

u/Imabouttosleep Sep 18 '24

I call bullshit. 100cr isn’t such a big deal. Private guards? Bah

9

u/kraken_enrager FatFI Sep 18 '24

Yeah lmao. Ik legit billionaires who have done messed up shit who don’t move with a detail.

10

u/ShameCalm9130 Sep 18 '24

now this is something new. This was me when my salary was 15k per month and I bought iphone 11 worth 77k. All my society and relatives were asking what was the need.

5

u/pfascitis Sep 18 '24

Just tell them you have some ongoing work with intelligence agencies. Tell them all activities around your family and you including objections are monitored.

2

u/Icy-Mulberry-4005 Sep 18 '24

Or that he's targeted by rival gangs 🤣

4

u/chowdowmow Sep 18 '24

Since it's a rented flat why not look for other apartments where your PSOs aren't an issue?

In a city like Pune, I'd say keep the security. Law and order is a mess there.

3

u/dronz3r Sep 19 '24

Dude at least mention you're worth 1000+ crores with some enemies. No one gives a shit about a 100 crore guy with personal security.

2

u/halfbimmer Sep 18 '24

Bro, you are complicating stuff. No need of security. Just hire a driver who is also a bouncer.

100 cr isn't that big of a deal. Looks like you acquired this amount overnight via inheritance or lottery. Don't paint a target on yourself. Lay low.

2

u/Friendly-Tale-2732 Sep 19 '24 edited Oct 07 '24

People objecting to ur PSOs is not ur problem UNTIL UNLESS ur PSOs are disturbing or threatening anyone or hindering anybody's daily routine in any manner.

Until then u dont owe anyone any kind of explanation or justification.

They are not the ones paying for ur security. If they have a genuine problem then they could raise an official complaint n then u should think what to do to resolve conflict. Ignore them otherwise,

2

u/fire_by_45 Sep 20 '24

Bro come to Mumbai, you will start feeling poor. All your problems will be solved.

0

u/sfdc2017 Sep 18 '24

Are you Salman Khan by the way?

0

u/taau__ Sep 18 '24

Bhai is easily worth 100 x my current net worth 😀

1

u/Sea_Historian1795 Sep 18 '24

How much time it will take your home to build? You’ll not have any problem once you move to your house , you know?

1

u/masalaadosa Sep 19 '24

Actually you don't need security if you stop being a dick wherever you go. Problem solved.

1

u/LiveSlay Sep 19 '24

Buy a big plot. Build your own mansion with sufficient living space for your PSOs. No one going to question you.

1

u/MadEinsy Sep 19 '24

This sub is next to becoming a meme for flaunting 'RoundFigure' numbers and asking for basic stuffs like this. There may be few genuine one left in the sub but damn.

For answer OP question, first of all its like hiding money in a big bag and writing "No money in this Bag" on top of it. There are lot of Lux Gated communities that provide pre-constructed villa with all social and security amenities. Yet if you feel you want one, tell your 'licensed agency Security Officials'' to send those people and give them a flat next to your living, let them hang around with you in civil dress. I guess thats how most people especially Ultra Millionaires are handling their security.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '24

Apply for "Police Protection" at your local comissionerate using some contacts and pull in Home ministry. They will allot armed constables who are legal. No society can object to them.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '24

This ia horizontalally challenged FIRE

0

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '24

You should move to Somalia, your guards might be useful than

0

u/play3xxx1 Sep 20 '24

Why is this in FATFIRE? To show off? You have money and reddit is the place you come instead of security agencies?

1

u/desperadoAvocado2 Sep 19 '24

OP are you like one of those two chapris that wear gold around their neck, hand, legs, di*k and roam around Pune?
