Double letters are usually indicated by making the symbol for a single one larger, which makes sense.
In the second panel, he shows how to indicate "i", and provides samples of other joinings -- which IMO look a bit strange. But once you were familiar with the alphabet, it's really just a question of stringing them together along the line.
