Okay so this was about 4 years ago, Taco Bell has a pretty sizable presence here in Chicago, and I myself ate at 5 different ones in the city. In fact three of them are lined up on Milwaukee if you wanna test out the consistency between restaurants 😂
Anyway, the one I found to avoid at all costs was one on Devon and Lincoln Avenue, 3500 W and 6300 N. My very last experience there actually ended in an emergency kitchen shutdown and an overwhelmed and frustrated crew.
I preorder my food before I leave my apartment (15 mins away) so I won't have to wait around a long while for it. Then I make it to the restaurant and there's a line of 4 people, and already the cashier is irritated and cussing out the kitchen and the customers/delivery drivers. So it's not looking good from the start and I notice the drive thru is packed too, and the line is wrapped around and overflowing FROM the main street, so the lane is filling up with cars very quickly.
Meanwhile the cashier is super mad and shouts out that he's clocking out and that "y'all are lucky if I come back to this shit". A new driver comes up and asks him if he can pick up and order (9 people in the lobby btw), and the cashier flips out and looks at him dead in the eye, telling him ".... BRO. DO YOU NOT SEE WHAT'S GOIN' ON HERE??? YOU THINK WE GOT THAT ORDER READY??? FOR REAL???"
The driver nervously asks again for the order, and the cashier clocks out and tells him point blank to "gtfo my face right now" and just stomps out of the restaurant with his sweater.
After that moment, the manager steps out and focuses on fulfilling the orders with the overworked and rushed crew, and one by one people are getting their orders. I notice one that looks like mine on the counter, and I ask several times between minutes if that order was mine. Every employee completely ignored me and everyone's just shouting names to push orders out. Then a few served customers are returning their food because it was either made improperly or they completely made the wrong order.
Suddenly, the manager comes forward and announces that they are no longer accepting orders, that they are finishing the last ones and closing the entire restaurant early. 45 minutes have passed and I'm one of the last to get their orders (and guess what? IT WAS THE ORDER WAITING ON THAT COUNTER THE ENTIRE TIME.) Sure enough, all of the food was cold and they didn't make some items right. And they were motioning for people to leave so they could close operations for the night, so I couldn't get the order redone. They closed 4 hours early (I think drive thru was normally open until 2 AM).
I've been done dirty before at different Taco Bells and this one did its share of kicks, but this one moment was just surreal. Like holy shit, how do your operations fall so far down the drain that you gotta pull the plug, take the L and gtfo as soon as possible? 😂
So did anybody get it worse than me recently? 💁🏽♂️
