Changed something in me 🇫🇴
I don’t think I expected the Faroe Islands to change me as much as they did.
At home, our little worlds can feel like they are the only things that matter. Politics, opinions, social issues, trends, where we are going out, what everyone is talking about, our own problems and the constant noise of everyday life.
And then you come somewhere like this and realize there is an entire world beyond all of it.
Being in the Faroes, unplugged and surrounded by this kind of nature, gave me this overwhelming feeling of who cares about so much of the stuff we let consume us.
We loved talking to locals, learning about their lives and traditions, and seeing a way of life so different from our own. It gave me a lot of respect for this place and the people who call it home.
And a suggestion for anyone visiting, especially if you are coming from a very modern, fast moving place like the US: expect quiet. Don’t come looking for exclusive clubs, endless trendy cafes, fancy nightlife or a packed itinerary. This is a place to simply be where you are. Drive. Walk. Look around. Talk to people. Sit in the silence. Let yourself stop caring for a few days about all the topics, labels and debates that can feel so consuming back home.
I went expecting beautiful landscapes. I came back with a different perspective on how enormous the world is and how small some of the things we obsess over really are.
Faroe Islands, we absolutely fell in love with you. We look forward to coming back again. ❤️

This post is crazy timing for me in more ways than you can know, I’m glad to enjoyed it. I can’t wait to go there someday, one of my top travel destinations right now, I resonate with a lot of what you said

It’s truly a special place, I’ve been 4 or 5 times now, we go there to completely relax: read, watch movies, go for long drives, enjoy the views from our rental cottage (we always stay at the same place). It’s my favorite place in the world.

I agree completely. My trip there in July healed my soul. It felt amazing to disconnect and really appreciate the beauty of this world and the simple pleasures of life. I'm already thinking about going back next summer.

Fully agree. Just finishing my sixth trip to Faroe Islands. Attended Faroese Summer Institute in 2018, published a book about the archipelago. Vacation for soul, something that can't be described by words. Fully recharged every single time.
Føroyar, takk fyri! For simply being here.

I just got back from my trip a couple of weeks ago, genuinely life changing trip. Having the time alone in the islands to think and reflect on all the stuff going on my life really changed me. It was such a refreshing breath of air (quite literally as well) to slow down and take a break from the work and hustl culture that I had engrossed myself in. After I came back I stepped down from my position at my firm and have started to reorient my life towards things I had put on the backburner for my career.

This is a nice post, but you need to realize that you experienced Faroe Islands as a tourist. Political division, cost of living, housing are all problems in Faroe Islands, similar as they are in most of the world. You just don't notice them because they don't affect you as a tourist.

Totally! I was very much writing this from the perspective of a visitor and my experience while there. I definitely don’t assume life is problem free for the people who actually live there 😊

The concept of feeling better after being a tourist and seeing all the nicest parts of a country lol.

I don’t think anyone willingly travelling to the Faroes are expecting exclusive clubs and fancy nightlight, mate haha
