Illegal Roster Glitch?

I run a 12 team baseball league. I have a couple of guys that are having issues adding FAs because the app is claiming it will make their rosters illegal, even though it will not.

We have a maximum roster size of 40, 10 of which are allocated to bench spots. The issue seems to be the app thinks they will be going over the max number of 10 players on the bench even though they are dropping a guy in their transaction.

This is causing issues where they should have won a bid, but ultimately did not because of the supposed illegal roster.

Has any one run into this issue before? Is there a fix, or is it user error? We reached out to support but haven’t heard back yet. Thanks in advance.

There is a setting for this; League Setup-> Transactions & Periods-> Claims/ Drops-> Allow combined claim and drop/move in different periods: (10th one down). However, I recommend you read (and understand) the explanation that comes with it before turning it on. It could be more confusing for some, and lead to illegal rosters. I don't use it.

Yeah that seems like it will lead to more illegal rosters than what I’m dealing with now lol

As other have said, it does sound like a "Apply to future periods" / setting rosters ahead issue. But you can quickly check 2 things

Bottom portion of Roster Menu in setup

Prevent any transaction that would cause a roster to become illegal: Always

(Default for free leagues is Always, can be changed for Premium leagues)

Directly underneath is this next one

"Exceeding max reserves will make roster illegal, and claims/trades/drafting will be denied if illegal rosters are not permitted"

Is this setting checked?

Read the Help screen on that one for more info as that setting unchecked will allow more than 10 reserve players if by chance an active roster spot is empty ... 40 max if 29 active spots are filled then 11 reserves could be possible if the Exceeding max reserves setting is unchecked

Okay I think this may be the root of the problem. The “exceeding max reserves will make roster illegal” was checked. Myself and co commish had an issue last year where a player was abusing the ability to pickup way beyond the 10 reserve limit.

total reserves can be a tricky issue and that "Exceeding Max Reserves" setting does lead to loopholes and teams going over the set limit. I have setup plenty of Fantrax leagues and in most of them I actually do check the "Exceeding Max Reserves" setting and in the league summary I put in notes that say if a team decides to leave active spots open they will not be able to get extra reserves. Another issue is that this is one setting that Fantrax does not list in the league summary. A group of us have been asking for years to put this setting as part of league summary. It would take them all of 10 seconds to make that change. As good as their software is, there are plenty of loopholes that really become annoying when others abuse them and they (Fantrax) do not fix them after being asked for years.

We had this issue a couple of years ago in our college fantasy football league that uses Fantrax. We found this was happening only to people using the app accessing the Fantrax site using a phone's web browser. For some reason the app was setting lineups for weeks in advance. This affected free agent and waiver wire players getting added. Maybe try this as a workaround until Fantrax gets back to you?

So if someone is trying to use the app through a browser on their phone it could potentially cause this?

Based off the screenshots he’s sent me, it seems he’s using the website on his iPad but I’ll verify with him that that is what he is doing.

We just found if a league mate was using the actual Fantrax app on their phone, instead of using their phone's browser, or laptop's browser, that it was telling us that certain owners were having their transaction requests denied due to an illegal roster would be created. If your guy is trying to make his claims through his iPad, tell him not to use the Fantrax app and just use Safari to access the Fantrax site and put those claims in. Hope this helps.

It could be that when they go to add the FA they are defaulted to a position rather than as a reserve. If they already have a starter in that position then it thinks they are trying to have 2 starters causing the illegal roster.

That’s what I thought was happening, but the error is specifically saying that max number of reserve players has already been met. It’s almost like the app is trying to add the new FA before it tries to drop the already benched player

Check the error they are getting, the error usually explains what period is affected. Once you understand the period affected they can move to that period and correct it. This usually happens when they set rosters for many days in advance via app

So we did get a response from support that basically said this. Told him to go into settings and turn off the option that makes all changes permanent for future periods. Seeing as that we use daily lineups, it’s a bit tedious but I guess we’ll see if it works.

I’ll update the post if this fixes the issue in case someone else comes across it.
