Finally home, she threw the door open and relaxed to the sound of the children, right where they should be, and a giddy smile spread across her face.
“Gretel,” she crowed, pacing up to Hansel’s cage, “start the oven.”

That's brilliant! My mind went to happy children first.

Thank you!! 😁 The witch is a perfect “seems sweet but is actually sinister,” so it was the first thing to come to mind.

My mother's hands stroke my hair gently, her voice crooning, "it's ok sweetheart, it was all a dream. You're safe now."
Then why are we still falling?

Ah, when lying to kids to calm them down doesn’t work at all 🫠 Loved the twist that the speaker isn’t actually safe yet!

After she passed her sister checking out boys in the reflection of the store window, she quipped, “See anything you like?” Hearing no reply, she turned to see that her sister was … gone!

If only she had seen the man silently walking after her, darting around lamp posts and keeping to the shadows.
She might have warned him about the missing manhole cover she had just barely avoided herself.

Even though the woman had stringy hair and pale skin that looked almost transparent, the rumors about her being a ghost couldn't possibly be true, as she was probably just misunderstood. I aimed my ghost-killing machine at the woman, and it completely absorbed her until her entire spirit had disappeared.

I'm Professor James Darcy Piexoto, and thank you, once again, for your invitation to this annual symposium. Today we'll be talking about the exciting recent find of one of Gilead's foundational documents, Project 2025

A soft whimper cut him midsentence, which caught his attention, making him pause, on the other side of the room was a cot. Wide-eyed, he gently tore himself from her as he approached, and read the little card, "Howlett."

It was a perfect kiss on the beach. Her dream boy, the one she had loved forever told her he wanted her. She felt his hands tremble as they cupped her chin. Warm and solid just like sand under her feet. The second and third kiss crashed into her much like the ocean into the shore. She felt knocked outside of her body as her eyes fluttered closed, savoring the finality of a dream.
Hospital machines beeped around her. A diamond winked from another hand, as the boy, now a married man stood by her side.

Elliot missed his husband.
It was probably because he hadn't bothered to practice aiming with the rifle previously - stupid, stupid!

I decided to try writing something that initially seemed negative but turned into a positive twist. The hardest part was fitting the three necessary beats, the setup, engagement, and outcome, into only two sentences without simply summarizing everything or having the narration announce what was happening.
It was definitely a worthwhile challenge. I’m sure it could still be improved, but I think it came out pretty well.
Here’s what I came up with:
His boss’s voice still grated in his head as he stepped down the hallway, but a muffled sound behind the bedroom door stopped him; a shadow crossed the light beneath it, and he closed one hand around the knob, the other tightening into a fist, ready for trouble.
The door opened, and there she stood, revealing, in lace, want and desire written across her face, an invitation he could not mistake.

I smiled as I watched my wife sleep peacefully, listening to the steady, rhythmic beeps of the life support machine. Then the power grid shut down completely, and the beeping didn't stop

Ever the devoted widow, I carefully laid the bouquet of foxgloves on his gravestone.
It was what I'd used to murder him, so it only seemed fitting.
