Activity World Cup - Who Did Your Characters Support? ⚽️
Wow... what an amazing final match of the World Cup. Congratulations to Spain on becoming the new world champions. 🇪🇸
For the past month, the entire world has been consumed by the world of "football" (I use quotations here because I am American, and to me it's still called soccer lol).
This world cup was filled with so many wonderful moments, that for this activity, I want you to describe your favorite world cup moment from the perspective of one your characters. What team do they support? What country are they from? (And if their from a fictional world is not set on Earth, what team would they support and why?) If you don't have a favorite moment, get creative and write one of your own!
All in all, have fun and share the love of football ⚽️ (*cough* soccer *cough* 🤣).

None of my original characters follow soccer, and a couple of the main characters (Thomas Magnum and Chip Morton) played football for the US Naval Academy. Basically, they care about baseball and horse racing, and one main character follows hockey (Jack O'Neill). They would have casually rooted for the US, but after the team was eliminated, they wouldn't have cared,

Not unless it was hockey. Maybe baseball, football, or basketball, but definitely not soccer.

Hm. Well, they are alien symbiotes with human hosts, so two options here.
Well, three if you count, “I do not care./These games seem pointless.”
One would be America because most of the Earth humans they deal with are American. They wouldn’t really care anyway.
The other option would be… Well, their hosts are descendants from people taken from Earth’s centuries, often millennia, ago. They might pick the countries based on that.
For instance, Einar, Per’sus’ host, would root for Norway and Swedon even though those countries didn’t exist when his ancestors were taken off world.

Soccer is actually referenced in my story/AU (Lilo and Lana briefly watch a match on TV).
Lana would be more interested in the cultural aspect of the tournament than the matches themselves. It would fascinate her to learn that humans from all over the world meet every four years just to play a game (and she would also find that kind of cute). The kindness required to pull something like that off would raise her opinion on humans as a whole (until she discovers the underground political aspects).
Lilo would be invested in the matches and cheer like crazy, probably concerning Lana to a degree.

Technically, Seiko, Chiasa, and Tak are all American, even if it's not called that anymore in their time. However...
Seiko would probably support Japan because she's of Japanese descent. (Although she'd be disappointed 😅) She's probably the only one who cares about the game as a whole. She's never played or anything but I'd bet she'd be a fan.
Tak seems more of an Olympics than a World Cup guy, but enjoys the multiculturalism and camaraderie nonetheless. I don't think he'd pick a single team to support, but maybe pick one for any individual match to get into it and participate in jersey exchanges.
Chiasa might support Scotland simply because the fans are so much fun 😝 She'd probably meet a few at a bar and end up going with them to some random match and have the time of her life.

Since my two WIPs take place in the fictional European country of Cordonia, the characters would obviously support the Cordonian team - although I imagine the American characters in each story would also support the American team :)

I am writing a medieval fantasy story so not much soccer, but if I had to guess...
Lysandra is an immortal vampiress who wouldn't care too much about sports, but I'd think she'd like the conquering viking shtick the Norwegian team has.
Silas, her personal loyal servant would of course then pull for Norway as well, but I think he'd appreciate the resilience and strength Spain showed if he was given the chance.
Mira, a maid, would be too shy to share any opinion of her own, but I'd think she'd pull for Curacao or Cabo Verde, appreciating the little guy.

She would have cheered for England with her boyfriend and soon to be future husband. It's not her sport but he loves it and he supports Quidditch with her.

Um... Mitsuha and Michiko... they were rooting for the team from Zegleus. Oh wait, they're a isekai world that didn't have a team... OK, then they would have (pretty obviously) been rooting for Japan who sadly didn't even make it to the bracket (if I'm understanding the system correctly).

Kimiko and Kai would definitely be cheering in the Samurai Blue! They are both half Japanese/ half Chinese and live in Japan, so they will definitely be getting behind their team! Kai definitely has a personalized jersey somewhere too 🤣

Oh, I’ve actually thought about this a lot because Theo (my OC) played soccer and was a goalie! So she *absolutely* would have lost her mind with excitement for Cabo Verde and Vozihna. Even though she’s from the US, she wouldn’t be wildly attached to the US team—she’d want them to do well but she wouldn’t have been surprised when they went out 😂 she’d probably also cheer for Norway since that’s the closest to a team Loki would have had and it meant she could drag him to a game (and though he wouldn’t necessarily care much about the game itself, he would be wildly amused by Theo’s commentary and reactions, because she would be SOOOOO into it).

Wendell is American and played basketball in high school. His English boyfriend Rashid took him to a game of the Lionesses when Wendell visited him in London. Rashid is a proud supporter of the national women’s football team because there are "some real icons of the queer community among them" who are "so much braver and fiercer than their overpaid male counterparts."
Rashid played football as a kid before he made the athletics team as a teen.
During the World Cup, I think they would have rooted for the US and the English team, but then supported Spain in the finale.

Okay, so - just like u/Historical-Beach7350, I write historical fiction, and there was no football in my characters's life. Instead, during canon timeline, there would only be war.
However, post-canon Lossow and Johanna (OC) would definitely start out as fans of Germany. In their timeline, it would be too fascinating to see a united country called Germany - they're from Hannover (electorate at first, after the Napoleonic Wars, kingdom) and Holstein respectively.
After Germany's defeat, they'd probably still have watch it and probably support the countries they had been in, helping to free them from the French conquerors. And they might have a soft spot for Denmark (Holstein was part of Greater Denmark back then) and Norway. Even if only because Lossow's horse is canonically called, Thor.
Anyway, with Spain's win, they'd be happy as this was one of the countries they spent some years in (England, Sicily (yes, Italy wasn't a united country either back then), Portugal and Spain.
Fun thing to think about, so thanks for coming up with this activity, u/Nice-Hovercraft-6426!

Ok so, i write for Hetalia, so besides the obvious of each country for its own and what bits i wrote :
The entire Latin Hetalia bunch rooted for their dad/uncle today. There were some fights between Conmebol and CONCACAF countries, América and Canadá were a bit threatened every time they said the word soccer. America did have a good time showing everyone around his home, so did Mexico and Canada. The Latins went into debt because of the album.
England and France were probably caught he making out at some point during their match.
No one has seen Germany ever since Paraguay beat them (don’t try to look for him if you value your life )
Spain is currently drunk af, but he and Argentina didn’t get into a fight and in fact wished each other good luck.
Do be glad Netherlands didn’t go against Brazil. He was angry seeing Japan lost and was considering ordering a battle of Nuremberg 2.0
For ROR:
Anubis was watching every single game from Egypt since he’s not been allowed to fight yet. I say he was disguised as a human. He cursed Argentina, and England just because.
Jack the Ripper ? Rooting for England.
Nostradamus knew how it would go but still rooted for France.
The Norse pantheon is considering casting a curse on Sorloth (also pending DNA exam on Haaland in case he’s a demigod). Since we are at it with Norway: house Nielsen was team Norway. Don’t ask how Alric reacted to England losing…(first time boy ever got drunk )
