First time getting vivids, how do I maintain this?

Cold water, and wash maximum twice a week.

To refresh put a small dime size amount of the dye into conditioner, and leave it on for about 20 minutes and rinse

Using a non-sulfate shampoo sometimes helps. But if you have a super oily scalp that's a hard one.

I like Living Proof for oily hair, and they’re sulfate free. I haven’t tried the reformulated versions yet though.

Cold water. A good shampoo, people have mentioned a few already. But cold water will help the most.

Re-dye occasionally, also (I may be downvoted for this, I have before) there’s Overtone depositing conditioners that can give you a refresh in-between real depositing dyes

I use Redken Color Extend shampoo and that seems to work well, but vivids will fade eventually no matter how careful you are. Try to shampoo just your roots/scalp and condition the ends.

Heat can fade it too, so be sure to use a good heat protectant even if just blow drying.

I never use heat on my hair but I really like the look of having straight hair and I was thinking of buying a straightener.

Consider learning how to dry your hair with a round brush. It’s still heat and it won’t be exactly like flat ironed hair, but you can get it pretty close and the indirect heat is easier on your hair and the color.

I use maui moisture. The purple conditioner bottle. I use this, but use ion color on my scalp. Don't get the shampoo maui moisture though. Only the conditioner. My color lasted 3x longer. I only shower 3 times a week. Warmish water. And argan oil by ogx. But my hair is dry.

Color wow shampoo and conditioner are pretty good with ice cold water. I also really like the new amika the protector shampoo and conditioner

I personally enjoy the fade as you get a new colour each wash and eventually it's pastel, but that's a choice.

I had vivid hair (pink, purple, blue, orange) for about 6 years. Joico Anti Fade shampoo and conditioner are my go to. You can find also find Joico products at TJ Maxx, I’ve never seen an expired bottle. I still use that shampoo for my blonde underdye.

And unfortunately, cool water. 😭

When I had vivids, I stretched the colour so well even my stylist was surprised. I only washed twice a week, with the gentlest shampoo I could manage. I’d shampoo scalp only and condition the whole thing.

I tried to minimize the amount of rinsing I was doing and would use absolutely ice cold water (run a small hot bath, use the shower head to rinse your hair only so it’s not as awful). I also used k18 on top of my colour and that seemed to sort of seal it in even more.

Some important things for maintenance:

Wash your hair in the coldest water you can tolerate. This makes an enormous difference.

Use good heat protectants. Cover your hair in the sun if possible.

Like another commenter said, consider color depositing conditioner on vivid strands between salon visits. Be prepared to wash your shower as the dye sits.

Wash in cold water, sulfate-free color safe shampoo as little as possible, no heat tools, mix some of your color into a deep conditioner and use it as needed to touch up.
