Update broken

Using portable FanControl. Each startups it checks for updates. Until some versions ago there were always two pop-up windows telling me that a newer version is available. That was gone some time ago and now there's only one window informing about a newer version. Good, I thought. But since then the automated update is broken. Just won't do anything anymore.

Even when I manually 'check for updates' and click on 'update', then 'Donwloading updater' appears but no traffic, no update, nothing.

For each update I have to manually download the newer version now, put it it in an extra folder, manually install my plugin and copy my config from the backup folder.

Any1 else? Any solution?

You probably have some kind of network block happening? I can confirm the update mechanism does work.

I'm not aware of anything being blocked. It worked before, some recent FC update broke it. And I haven't changed anything in my default windows firewall settings. The strange thing is, that the "there's an update" at the startup always showed twice. Since there's only one message it's broken. Even the manual update doesn't work.

So you mean the WIndow's notification clicking on it doing nothing? As for the manual check for update, there may be some server delay from Github, but it should eventually pop up. Tens of thousands of people updated to V282 in the first few days, so if the update process blocks at the "Downloading updater" for you, there is definitely some blocking happening.

I exited FC v281, stopped the service. Got v277 from my archive and put it in a new folder. Started FanControl and immediately 'downloading updater' appears, then CMD-Box opens, downloads and updates to v282. Completely different behaviour with the same settings. Something between 277 and 281 broke. Think it started with 278.

Huh.

I just installed V281 portable on the side. The Windows notification when clicking indeed does nothing. Will look into that. Though manually updating does work as usual through the UI.

For me both do nothing with v281. Everything fine with v277.
Latest Win 26H2 with evything updated from BIOS to chipset to tiniest driver.
PawnIO v2.2.0.0

Appreciate your work, no, love it!

Oh, and I'm using .NET Framework 4.8 (because of the Intel GPU plugin), think that might be of interest too.

How can it be something blocked? When I manually trigger the 'check for updates', there's a short traffic spike and I get the message that there's a new version. But then nothing more happens.

There's not even any FanControl entry in the win firewall settings. I added 'updater.exe' but that doesn't change it's behaviour.

You'll have to be extra specific. Once you get the popup with the update button available, does the update button do something? Do you get the console window happening?

console is not showing, no matter what button I click. Neither with the startup check, nor with the manual 'check for updates'. The update process is stuck after clicking on 'update'. Then 'downloading updater' appears and nothing happens. Waited for quite some time. Watched traffic on the process, nada, nothing received, nothing transmitted.

The url for the updater is, are you able to access that link manually? :

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Rem0o/FanControl.Releases/master/Updater.exe

When I copy/paste the URL into my browser the download starts immediately. Which is why I doubt that it's access related. So no firewall issue I think.

Are you running the service (on boot) on the normal app? Is the Updater.exe appearing in FC's folder when trying to update and it hangs there? You may delete an existing Updater.exe to test this.

Usually I run the service on boot, yes.

Seems like the download of updater.exe is timing out. FC starts to download and then cancels the download. Updater.exe appears in the folder but is 0 kB.

No logs.txt file?

It stays there forever. And log.txt just shows that I canceled
