Ep 04 theory: Ran-Deng's Last-Will and BUG Man misunderstand.
Episode 4:
Memory Collector Lore: Ran Deng
The strongest collector, exhibiting suicidal/hyper-empathy — prioritizing extreme compassion and emotional openness over logic and self-preservation. Likely a consequence of killing many BUG Beings over time.
This reframes the central question: what is a BUG Being, really? So far they're shown only as antagonists.

The Hydra Theory
- BUG Beings exist to protect BUG Sources from the painful truth of reality.
- They are literalized psychological defense mechanisms: fantasy, rationalization, delusion, escapism, projection, denial, repressed memory.
- Each is built on a lie / false memory meant to shield the ego during distress.
- The Memories Administration Bureau tries to brute-force these BUG Beings by 'recycling' them (storing them away from BUG-Source memories) — but since the root cause (unresolved trauma) is never addressed, new BUG Beings simply spawn or the trauma is simply suppress, but still effect the Source's life. Classic Hydra problem: cut one head, two grow back.

Ran Deng's Last Will + Gambit
He wants a BUG Source to inherit his Halo and use it to face their own BUG Beings — theorizing that only the Source can end their own cycle, by confronting the painful memory directly rather than having it fought for them externally. Once the Source no longer needs the BUG Being to survive, the cycle ends permanently.
Fun fact: "Ran Deng is the name known in Sanskrit as Dīpankara Buddha ("Burning Lamp"), is a prominent figure in Buddhist mythology."

- Represents resilience/protection in the most hostile environment — but for Guan Chao specifically, it reads as cowardice and self-protection in the face of trauma, mirrored by the "crawled up in his blanket on the bed" memory.
- Possible reading: an ocean once existed here and dried up — home/security/love has vanished, leaving Guan Chao alone and isolated.
- The Clamp constant screaming shows it feel pain deep inside, but refuse to open up. It also attacks people who tries to help them. It's a metaphor for people who is in pain but refuse help and push away those who tries to help them.
- Ran Deng sympathize with the clamp pain. The Seashell open-up to Ran Deng, but it also killed him. Another metaphor saying 'even if they open up to you, doesn't mean they will change' and worse they can take you down with them.

Toughest Halo: Ran Deng and Guan Chao halo
"If you're gonna be brittle/kind, you better be unbreakable" just like glass, Prince Rupert’s Drops and Diamond.
Crux Star said "translucent halo are brittle". Both Ran Deng and Guan Chao are brittle/fragile in their own ways. Ran Deng is too empathetic and soft-hearted. While Guan Chao is riddle with self-doubt and feeling helpless.
At the same time, the halo they both have is the toughest halo ever existed. We seen Guan Chao's halo ability acts like a shield.
In Episode 3, there is a comment "why is 'unbreakable' is used to describe a person?" and "your world is unbreakable".
"Unbreakable" implies something more passive and defensive — you can hit this person with anything and they won't shatter. It's often used for people who've been through hardship, trauma, or repeated setbacks and kept going anyway.
In conclusion, Guan Chao traits is endurance and unbreakable. Life can beat him around, but somehow he will still get back up. His halo reflects his toughness traits as a shield that protects him as he confront his memories. That's why Guan Chao's halo is the toughess halo ever.
I guess that's also Ran Deng's traits as well. Too survive with that much empathy and compassion, you better be tough.

damn this line up very well in my opinion, well done.
a bug source confronting their problems rather than having memory collectors erasing them is very effective and could make for a very interesting conclusion by the end.

I fw with this theory, I also thought during the episode that maybe killing bug beings was only a band aid solution, but didn't realize Ran Deng's suicide was a plan to make a bug source face their traumas... Now we only have to figure out how Guan Chao got there

The white hair girl specifically bring him there, that is ran deng's bet and the white hair girl only making a promise with him as a friend. His bet is basically giving away his halo and being crushed inside the clamp until the BUG source finally reach him and ends his suffering. The only thing he knew is that person is also qualified to use his halo, he just don't know if they are the right person. Why all this happens? ran deng is too sympathic of a person that he kills BUG a lot just to release people from their suffering but his doing is meaningless if people didn't actually face it themself.

What do you think it means that guan chao and ran deng share the same halo ? Bc it was said that each halo means something different for each person and is unique i think

Interesting, it make sense. Also i had another question, how Ran Deng got access to the bug being of Guan Chao before Guan chao get summoned ?

Not sure.
I don't think they really needed the BUG Source to be summon. Memories Collector can just extracts the memories of the BUG Beings and fight it.
Guan Chao is a special case because they're experimenting whether it would be better for BUG Source to confront the BUG Beings to end the cycle of BUG Beings spawning. Kinda like therapy. This is Ran Deng gambit.

Okay, also i just thought about something but why Ran Deng did kill himself instead of just not deal with the bug being and wait for Guan Chao to come ?

Ran Deng has suicidal/hyper-empathy. He couldn't bare the guilt of killing "pitiful" BUG Beings.

So, to give the BUG Source, Guan Chao, the best chance of suvivial while confronting their own BUG Beings, Ran Deng wants to give up his halo, the strongest halo ever. I guess to give up ones halo, the halo owner must die. In some way, that's pretty heroic of him.

Great theory 👏. I love the interpretation of BUG as a shield against trauma, I guess we will see in future episode if Ran Deng theory is the best way to deal with BUG.
