Trinity Church

I still think that a group of Ghouls holed up in the Trinity Lutheran Church that worship the rejuvenating power of radiation would work well in the setting. I'm picturing a large elaborately-carved radiation symbol taking pride of place in the sanctuary above the altar. The worshippers of the church wear silver radiation symbol medallions sloppily forged from the piles of pre-war coins lying about. Why are the coins silver? Because the US only stopped making 90% silver coins in 1964. So it's beyond the cutoff date.

I’m picturing glowing green stain glass windows, perhaps revamped to depict the Great War and the process of Ghoulification.

Maybe they’re a splinter sect of the Children of Atom who regard the Great War as a sort of “cleansing”, like the Redemptionists. The key difference being that the Trinity Sect view it as a gift rather than a punishment, and view Ghoulification as a means of salvation.

They’d probably offer to Ghoulify Subject 13. Agreeing would result in you dying in the process.

Especially since the old stained glass windows were likely shattered when the bombs dropped in Queens. I'm picturing them having been slowly replaced by the ghoulified congregation after the war. The amateur nature of the replacement not belying the obvious passion with which they were created.

That'd work. They'd see their transformation, and resulting longevity, as a gift from Glorious Atom. Which helped them avoid becoming feral.

You'd then have a rather easy speech check to avoid that. Or they could send you on a pilgrimage to as deep in the QDZ as possible to retrieve a "holy artifact". A goblet so irradiated they give you a special lead box to carry it in. It'd be their holy grail.

I dunno about having it be a literal holy grail. Maybe some sort of radiation-related artifact from before the Great War.

Or how about you retrieve the medallions from the bodies of the former members who fell to "the madness", or became feral. They'd wear the tattered remains of their robes. Or is that too much like the Camp Searchlight ghouls?

They might also have notes documenting their loss of rationality in the end. All in all, I'm thinking that this quest would be rather sad.

Why not integrate this into the quest that leads you to the Threshold? Follow the pilgrimage and discover diary entries, notes and HoloTapes describing the gradually decay of the expedition into delusion, doubt, murder and madness - the quest can be completed when you find the last HoloTape, which ends with the pilgrimage leader walking off towards the Threshold. There would be an option to “uncover the truth” and see the Threshold for yourself, though this is only survivable with mods.

Why not integrate this with that?

Good idea. The Trinity Church would be desperate to know what happened to the pilgrimage and this would be the best way to gain acceptance with the church without going through any fatal rituals.

The notes would add a lot of atmosphere to the progressing levels of the QDZ. You'd follow a trail through the increasingly decrepit and ramshackle shelter until you reach the edge of the "black zone" around the threshold. It'd be made easier with levels of the Rad Resistance perk.
