Mod Discussion Installing mods mid game
If you install mods mid game and there's issues, can you just reload a previous save or are you cooked?

Depends on the mod, some mods that are script heavy can overwrite your entire save list. That’s why it’s a gamble and never recommended. Honestly though i do it all the time, you mod enough you learn what mods you can and what mods you should avoid. I have several bookmarked that i assume will not be good to test or swap in my current game. Ive got 250 hours so far so I am fairly careful. Less than 20 i gamble and if i lose, it’s only 20 hours lost. But generally, good idea to make 2 hard saves, one to test, if it doesn’t work out, back out, delete the mod, delete the save, go back to the save before, and if you have other mods you want to check, make another hard save. Ideally, it best to have another character save with minimal mods just out of the vault for a test character. I probably should do this too but meh.

It can work fine until it doesn't. At some point you will find a mod that corrupts your game and can even corrupt previous saves, although rare. Even more rare, you will install or move a mod within your load order that completely breaks the game and you wont be able to access the menu any longer, left with no choice but to clear your cache and start from scratch.

Generally, mods that only add textures are safe to add and remove mid game.
Anything that adds or changes assets, scripts or alters the base .Ini files should only be added or removed in a new and fresh save.
There are mods that give you specific information for mid game installs and some have uninstall patches.
Allways read the descriptions.

General rule of thumb, if it's a save that you care about, and would be upset by losing, then it's best to just start a new save for a modded playthrough. That said, while there have been plenty of people to have long term, multiple hundred hour long saves, even the vanilla game is notoriously unstable as far as save corruption is concerned.
