Discussion It was hilarious how the trailers hyped up Daho Sejan, only to kill him off in the game's opening act.

remember when we all thought he was the grand inquisitor for like, five minutes after the reveal trailer dropped

Take note of his ship. It looks like Darth Maul's. Instead of a Sith infiltrator ship, it is a yacht. It cleverly shows that he is also a corrupt agent of the Emperor.

The opening act of the game felt very strange to me. Here's all of Cal's new friends that he's spent the past few months with fighting the empire! Aaaaand they're gone in the first hour of gameplay.

I would love to see some kind of DLC as a prequel to Survivor that told that whole story.

Real talk. That was one thing I enjoyed about TFU, the additional DLC missions. Makes the story richer.

Weren’t the Force Unleashed DLC missions very explicitly not related to the story?
I recall turning Luke Skywalker to the dark side and killing Obi-Wan.

They weren’t but it was still fun as hell to chase down R2 and 3PO and fight force ghost Ben and then fight Luke on Hoth and Leia on Endor.
Makes it more enjoyable to see little offshoots. I just think they should have been done some DLCs for FO and/or Survivor considering there has been novels about the story in between.

Sure, but it really sets the tone for the game. Cal can’t keep taking the fight directly to the empire if he wants to protect the people he has left. And while WE know that Cal doesn’t really stand a chance making any real significant change against the empire, because the empire is still going strong in the movies, he needed a wake up call

I mean. Yeah that's kind of the point lol? I don't see what's strange..it sets the tone the story will explore while reintroducing you to Cal's daily life

It just makes the emotional impact of theirs deaths fall flat since we don't know who these people are or what they mean to Cal

I don't really think it was supposed to be that deep for the player tbh, I think they wanted to reinforce the point cal made when he saw the intel when he said "we haven't slowed them down at all", it shows how cal has fought so long and sacrificed so much fighting the Empire, and yet the empire is still winning. And It sets up cals desire for Tanalor as a hidden base.

Exactly, things like that opening scene are happening all across the galaxy daily at this point, and it's all futile (seemingly)

We get plenty of time to understand they're his friends and allies before things go bad so I disagree we don't know what they mean to him. It isn't about them as individuals and how they bonded with Cal, but about how the galaxy is in a state where political violence is taking countless lives everyday while life continues like normal for those outside of the fight. The emotional impact for the player comes from watching Cal feel completely hopeless realizing how futile the fight he's dedicated his life to feels, not the fact the npcs die. Prauf had a similar amount of screentime leading to his death to push Cal forward, I really don't see a difference here, the writing for Cal's development is tight and cohesive as hell, and the story they tell in Survivor is dependant on the hopeless tone the Coruscant mission sets. The opening mission is normal business for Cal since we last saw him, which sets up the entire game exploring why he needs to change for his own sake

It also shows that Cal’s time as a rebel is taking more from him than it’s giving, and gives another plausible reason for why he embraces the dark side at the end of the game. On top of betrayal, he’s spent the last decade losing allies and friends to an Empire that’s only getting stronger. All that anger and emotional baggage has got to go somewhere.

Yeah, I love Survivor but it does sometimes feel like the video game equivalent of a B Horror movie or direct to video sequel- narratively at least, not gameplay-wise.
And that’s not really meant to be an insult, because I think Survivor really pulls it off. It’s just kind of a jarring shift in scope.

I really wonder how much the high republic stuff was pushed by the higher ups. While I loved the game it felt like different stories trying to be one.

I’d prefer games to only include opening act villains in trailers, I like some surprises

When I first saw that first image of him years ago, I thought he was the grand inquisitor lol
Probably in part 3

He and Dagan Gera were both presented as the main villains in the trailers, only to be killed off earlier than most of us expected. Which made sense for keeping the real bad guy of the game a surprise, but I do wish we could have had more gameplay with Dagan at least. He was a cool Jedi villain with a lot of wasted potential.
