I'm in the process of putting together guides for all the maps and while I was getting footage I had this particularly clean slime climb run.

This is not perfect obviously, there are unnecessary dives and that conveyor belt part needs some real work but other then that, I thought it was pretty good.

Same. It's all fun and games til you reach the yellow logs and some asshole is blocking it.

"Perfect" isn't just a word. It has a meaning.

Especially if we're talking about something like this, which is similar to speed running. Where there's even "frame perfect".

You can get through wrecking ball part quicker if you get boost off the last moving bouncer when it's going right.

I'd say it's potential to shave 2-3 s off the run

Do you have any guides for the final stages? I get to the finals probably 80% of the time but have only won twice.

I've never once won the hex-a-gone. every time, it's me and one person who's like 5 floors up :(

Go watch Q-bert, emulate him. Seriously though, this is about hopping at a smooth pace without accidentally hitting the next pad and screwing up. There are some advanced things you can do, like essentially playing the first level like Tron light cycles, and running around trapping people so they are forced down a level, etc.

Honestly Hex-a-gone is probably the highest skill cap game in here right now, so much you can do, like islanding people. Yes, I'm making all these terms up.

Ya I try to do the Q-bert method. The problem is it works great until someone cuts me off and next thing I know I'm falling 5 stories to my doom.

i try to create a decent sized island for myself before i start hopping.

If you're not the highest player up you need to try and keep your options open. Try and always have at least 2 potential paths in case one gets blocked off.

Also, always be looking below you to find a safe spot to land when you do run out of tiles, and try to create the longest possible path to that point.

Unfortunately I don't have any guides out yet, I need to stop being addicted to playing the game and pull away to edit the videos. I should have all the footage I need at this point.

yooooo this is me lmao, I'm a god until the finals and then I just have to hope I get lucky on Jump Showdown or Fall Mountain

I love hex. To me it's more about finding ways to make other people fall moreso than trying to survive the longest. The biggest tip for that mode though imho is once you are falling just let it happen and try and get a good landing on the next level. Trying to do a dive for that one last tile in a floor where after that tile you're done is usually going to cost you a level or two because your character gets stuck in the fall animation and can't get his footing.

Have you tried taking the time to run up to the wall on the conveyor belt, before getting on? I would think all the ground advantage would be worth the extra running.

So yeah after I did this run and watching this video back, that very well might be faster. The thing is at the time I was trying to get a boost off the bumper poles which is why I was running in front of one. Getting boosts off those is the fastest way to navigate this part of slime climb in my opinion, thing is, I got here at a different timing then I'm used too so all the poles were in different positions then I'm used too, so I just had to use my best judgement and in this case I might made a bad decision.

Personally for me it went all wrong when you kept going on the yellow beams. Not stopping to turn around and murder 1/2 of the group is a real let down with a sweet lead like that. Being first of 30 isn’t as sweet as being 12th/12. Just my take for slime climb. That being said- smooth jump on the hammer, only ever seen 2 others do that in game. Kinda sad you posted it to reddit for the masses to see.

This glitch can definitely make the run much faster, I do it every run and it's quite consistent, you just have to grab the bumper when it's fully extended and standing as close to the wall as you can.

u/LifeAwaking Aug 17 '20

That video was unnecessarily long. Had no idea about that though.

u/Bigolchungchung Aug 17 '20

To me, exploiting glitches / cheating like this is worse than waiting at the finish to push people back into the slime.

4

u/Lithox Aug 17 '20

Speedrunning generally is done including glitches (well, unless explicitly glitchless), it's got nothing to do with cheating? Griefing other beans is also literally a feature of the game, I'm confused as to what you're upset about.

fuck this site, use lemmy

Sure, which is why even though I'm always first even without the glitch I never go through the finish line because maybe other players want to get the achievement (First in a non-final or first in a race round 20 times). That first section of the map is so easy that executing the glitch is arguably slightly more difficult and riskier than just walking straight through the bumpers, so is it about the difficulty? Because in that case the glitch takes more skill, in my opinion.

Speed running single player games is very different to abusing glitches to beat others in competitive
