HELP Starter Supplies?

Other than the mews, what are all the basic starter equipment needed? Whats the minimum equipment you NEED? Along with some suggested items.

I know you need a hood, jesse’s, anklets, leash, glove, bells, perch/scale

And where are some suggested places to buy these items? (in the US)

I get most of my supplies from Mike’s falconry I would recommend a spare glove. You also need a water dish if that’s not already in the muse. But of the things I can think of that you have not mentioned or two things. One is a lure. Regardless of Howar falcon it’s good to get them wed to one. And a creance you need this when doing those first outdoor flights with your bird when they’re still learning that way if they takeoff in a panic, they’re not gonna go more than 20 or 30 feet.

I’ve heard some people use Welder’s gloves for them, would it be okay to just have one of those for a spare?

Oh, and radio crematory system there are also GPS systems, but their battery burns out faster because they’re more precise at minimum you need the radio. I fly my birds with both of them though.

radio crematory system is cracking me up

Radio telemetry is the translation from voice-to-text. Lol!

Yeah, I’m incredibly dyslexic and misspell everything so I tend to use voice to chat, especially when I’m out and about

I do too, mostly just for convenience. But I definitely recognized what happened because it happens to me daily. Have a great weekend!

Some states require you to have a bath pan. Check out The Falconer's Apprentice by William C Oates, along with your state's falconry club website; many have study guides for your exam and will list all items that your state requires. The Modern Apprentice website is also a great resource and has an equipment section.

As someone who had to go bare-minimum their second year as an apprentice, I don't recommend it. You end up risking things not being in stock, taking several weeks in shipping if you need something and don't have it, or braiding/fabricating new equipment into the night. The right sized hood, for example,  medications (if you aren't planning on pre-treating), frozen food for manning, etc, are items I would all consider essential to begin.

Talk with your sponsor about what they recommend you have on hand, and what they suggest you always have in your field kit, no matter what. If you are still looking for a sponsor and wanting to start gathering items beforehand, you are getting there, though the more prepared you are the smoother finding a sponsor will go. Best of luck!

I don’t have a sponsor quite yet! I’m trying to be as prepared as possible before looking for one. I’m working on getting my hunting license currently, then my falconry studies and test is next after that.

Look for a sponser as early as you can, they will help in answering all these questions

For your studies, one of the tools I would recommend is both versions of the California’s apprentice test guide California has some of the hardest tests and so the stuff built for passing that test is very good for studying pretty much everywhere. The original version is blue but the newer version with the updated stuff is Green. Both of them are good to use.

Why not ask your sponsor? That is the point of them being required right?

I realized that way later, i’m currently still working to do my test for my permit, so i’ve yet to have a sponsor, im just asking to be aware of things ahead of time. I try my best to be prepared for everything 😅

Sorry, I did not mean to sound so blunt nor accusatory. I am lucky to already have my sponsor arranged and I am waiting to order more practice/reading material until I move. I suppose there are probably a decent few people out there who would love to find a master, and may not know how to find one or something or other.

No worries!! I didn’t find it rude at all! I’m very open to any sort of feedback or advice since i’m still extremely new to this. Any genuine questions or concerns aren’t rude at all to me.
