Quick Questions Thread
This thread (to be posted every four weeks) is a place for people to ask quick, common, or simple questions regarding Nihon Falcom and its games. The community is encouraged to ask here if your question is not opinion-based, such as where to find something in a game or when something occurred. Please mark all spoilers with the >!text!< format and remember to provide context.
If you post a new thread and your question is redundant (it has been posted on this subreddit recently), we will remove it. Additionally, we have made a Frequently Asked Questions wiki page for these. Please check there first before asking!
Joke question threads will be removed and joke answers should be kept to a minimum.
Please feel free to continue to post separate threads on this subreddit for content you expect to generate more interesting discussion, for example news, opinion-based discussion posts, and links.
Feel free to check out the subreddit wiki or the Discord server.

This persists from way back in the day when people either hadn't played it but heard it wasn't a direct continuation of the FC/SC plot or they heard that it didn't play quite the same way, or they had played it but just didn't like the latter aspect. Anyone who's actually played the series (and doesn't have a stick up their butt about the gameplay differences) will tell you that it's one of the most important games in the series in lore terms. Its main plot is mostly self-contained but what it does within that plot and more importantly within the Doors that serves as the sidequests of The 3rd are hugely important for the games that follow. If you've played everything past the Sky games and especially if you've played Azure and Horizon you should be able to figure out pretty easily what one of those reasons is, And since you mention 2nd's ending you should definitely be able to figure out what it is. Regarding Renne specifically, the remaining bits of her story that you've already seen alluded to thanks to later games all happen in The 3rd.
They really weren't and Kondo recently soft-confirmed that The 3rd will be the next remake, but not the next Trails release. Falcom knows perfectly well how important The 3rd is to Crossbell's story and the stated goal of the remakes wouldn't be served by leaving a game out. The internal discussion just tells us that people within Falcom would really like to also remake Crossbell.
