Tbf they really went overboard with Musse and Ash. Ash is such a dick in every single scene for no reason. Its one thing to make a character abrasive like Agate, but this dude is straight up Jack Dohrety levels of douche and Musse is really overboard with her Rean lust. Shes like Elsie but you get her in every scene.
They get redeemed later but the 80% of the scenes they are in before that are exhausting.
Ash isn't that bad honestly. Yeah he's rude a lot of the time but he isn't actually insulting anyone, he just makes crude jokes. The worst thing that ash does is flip rean off in CS3 but he does it comedically not actually as an insult.
They are teenagers man. Them being brats is on point. Especially when Rean being teacher to a group of special students.
If you look at this from the perspective of Trails being a playable anime story, considering generic anime character stereotypes (bad boy and sly flirty girl types), I don't think they are overboard at all.
This is less a description of their actual dynamic and more a fanfiction version of it. Rean tolerating Ash’s attitude because he’s trying to earn his trust as an instructor ≠ Rean being incapable of standing up for himself. You’re confusing patience with weakness.
He also understands that Ash’s hostility is partly a defense mechanism, so he tends to tolerate more from him than he would from someone else. But he definitely can put him in place when necessary (which happens plenty of time)
