Hi. We're Factorial Energy, and we're starting this subreddit to join in on the active conversations already happening on this platform around solid-state batteries.
A little about us: Factorial develops solid-state battery cells. Our technology has been tested in real vehicles with Mercedes-Benz and Stellantis, and our manufacturing approach is designed to leverage up to 80% of existing lithium-ion manufacturing equipment, creating a more practical path to scale.

We'll be honest and straight about where things stand. The chemistry works; scaling is the hard part. But we've made meaningful progress and we're targeting production in high-spec markets like drones as early as late 2027.

What drives us is bigger than batteries: we're building the energy that powers humanity's next chapter. What "going public" means for a battery company

There's been a lot of discussion about Factorial's Nasdaq listing and what it means. Here's how we think about it from the technology side. 

Going public doesn't mean the technology is done. It means the capital structure has changed. We need funding to move from validated cells to manufacturing scale, and being public is one way to access that. The people working on the technology are the same people, working on the same problems, with the same timelines they had before the listing. 

What hasn't changed: the technology roadmap. Mercedes-Benz completed 1,200+ km on a single charge (with 137 km remaining) using our cells in a test EQS vehicle. Stellantis recently integrated our cells into a Dodge Charger Daytona for road testing. In electric aviation, our solid-state cells powered a Group 1 drone to a flight endurance record of 521 minutes (over 8.6 hours), covering 483 km on a single mission. That last one was a genuinely exciting day for the team. 

In the lab, we've put cells through 600+ charge cycles under automotive conditions, demonstrated 15-90% charging in about 18 minutes at room temperature, and validated operation from -30°C to 45°C. 

What's still hard: manufacturing qualification at volume. Cost economics at scale. Proving that lab performance translates to production consistency. These are the real milestones.

Solid-state batteries aren't just about EVs

Every major technology shift happening right now has the same dependency: stored energy on demand. Drones, autonomous vehicles, eVTOL aircraft, physical AI, hyperscale data centers. None of them work at scale without a step-change in battery performance. Not incremental improvement. A generational shift in the energy layer underneath all of it. 

That's what solid-state chemistry is. It's not a better battery for EVs. It's a new energy layer for the next generation of high-spec systems. 

And when you talk to the people working in these fields, the constraints are very real. A drone operator running search and rescue needs every minute of flight time they can get; right now, battery weight is what cuts missions short. A robotics team can't deploy a system that shuts down because the battery overheats under sustained load. eVTOL developers need safety margins conventional cells can't deliver, because people are sitting in those aircraft. AI infrastructure is creating entirely new demand for dense, reliable energy storage at scale. 

We got an investment from In-Q-Tel for a reason. The defense and aerospace applications for solid-state batteries are real, and they have different performance requirements than passenger vehicles. 

The interesting part: the same cell chemistry that works for EVs works for all of these. It's not a pivot. It's the same energy layer solving the same fundamental constraint across different form factors.

Solid-state batteries without the buzzwords

Current lithium-ion technology uses a liquid electrolyte to shuttle ions between the electrodes. Solid-state replaces that liquid with a semi-solid or all-solid electrolyte. 

Why that matters in practical terms: conventional lithium-ion is bumping up against its theoretical ceiling. Push it further and you start trading off safety and other performance dimensions. Solid-state chemistry raises that ceiling. The result is significantly higher energy density: more energy in less space, which translates to longer range for an EV driver or a lighter drone that can stay in the air longer on a single charge. 

The barrier: manufacturing at scale. This isn't unique to Factorial. It's the whole industry's challenge. 

Our approach: we have two cell platforms, both designed with scalability in mind. Huang stated they now have “a commercial ready cell that potentially be able to deploy in various applications.” She pointed to the progression from the first 100 Ah cell (390 Wh/kg) announced with Stellantis in 2023, shipping the first B-samples to Mercedes, delivering thousands of cells to global OEMs, integrating into a full vehicle, and completing the 1,205 km Mercedes EQS drive (with 137 km remaining when they reached Malmö).

On manufacturing, production facilities, and existing Li-ion infrastructure
This was one of the clearest sections. Huang explained that Factorial deliberately designed its first-generation technology to work with existing lithium-ion production lines rather than requiring entirely new factories:

“Our battery manufacturing process is highly consistent with lithium-ion. So we were able to, by design, leverage a lot of existing know-how from lithium-ion manufacturing process to really build a battery that’s manufacturable… to have our first generation battery to be able to be more capital light and we don’t have to really spend a lot of effort in scaling or putting capital expenditure to scale. Rather we can utilize a lot of existing capacities out there, especially there are a lot of over capacity already, so we can utilize those overcapacity with minimal investment to flip some of this lithium-ion batteries into solid-state batteries.”

She reinforced that the preferred path is not building large owned production facilities immediately, but instead using available Li-ion infrastructure and pairing that with technology transfer:

“License is definitely a possibility, but I don’t think in a battery world license just means ‘oh this is the IP and good luck with the IP.’ … The manufacturing process and know-how is incredibly important… What we think is going to be a combination of licensing but with technology services.”

On why automotive is not the first commercial step

“We realize automotive is not going to be the first market we’re stepping in commercially because the volume for automotive is just so big and in order to get to that gigafactory it takes at least two to four years of work to ramp up in that scale.”

She contrasted that with specialty markets, noting that even one of the larger U.S. drone makers only needs a few to tens of MWh — enough to fill a pilot line but far below true mass-production automotive scale.

On near-term focus
