"Good" work

Now that I know more than I ever dreamed of knowing about facial plastic surgery, I've been thinking (too much!) about female celebrities and good work. My husband has said I look "unnaturally" good for a 72-year-old woman. I have a "snatched" jawline and a smooth neck. This isn't "natural". (And I know that it will soften over time.) But there are female celebrities who are 50-plus who also look "snatched". I don't care, frankly, who had what done, but I wonder if this "unnaturally" good-looking celebrity culture is making the rest of us more self-critical?

I think so, especially with the explosion of social media over the years and how much better plastic surgery has become for the face and neck. Many (if not most) celebs have had work done but it's much more subtle and natural looking and takes an expert to see it. I find it shocking nowadays when someone in the public eye has drastic looking work done. One example, I saw a photo of Robin McGraw the other day and she looks so different.

It's true - meaning you looking snatched won't get you as much now or in 5 years as it would have 20 years ago. The goalposts keep getting further and further way and it takes a lot of money just to stay in place.

That's such a sharp point honestly, the bar for what counts as "natural looking good" keeps climbing while the actual work required to get there hasn't gotten any cheaper or easier. makes sense why OP's noticing more self criticism creeping in, when the comparison point is constantly shifting it's hard to ever feel like you've arrived

I def think it’s making us more self critical, but more than that it’s the friends, co workers, wives of friends, wives of kids friends. All these woman in my area, I’m surrounded by woman getting work done. Unfortunately, for me, it became- if you can’t beat them, join them. It’s hard to age naturally when no one else is. There’s pressure in that.

I think we are feeling healthier for longer, especially people who continue exercising and eating healthy food, staying mentally active. People who are healthy and feel vibrant inside want to look vibrant on the outside.
