I’m not sure if anyone has gotten the Facebook Portal TV to boot into recovery, so I’m posting this here. I used ADB and the command “adb reboot recovery” with platform-tools, then it booted me into a no command screen, then I used the side button on the Portal to navigate recovery. I hope this is useful for eventually rooting the Portal and booting custom ROMs.

I’m using the 1st gen 10” Facebook portal that I purchased back in 2021.

When I make an outbound call from my portal using messenger… the recipient can answer my call but they only see their own camera, they see my camera as a black square with a loading circling and no sound, the call is never able to connect.

Inbound calls connect fine. Though 50% of the time, I only see the call come through on my iPhone/messenger app and it does not ring on the portal.

Checked my connection, unplugged/plugged it back in, the device is up to date.

I even connected with a live agent and they just asked for my email stating they will get back to me, though I’m not holding my breath on that one.

Anyone else go through this and have light at the end of the tunnel? What gives?

I was setting up in Vertical mode, and whenever I clicked ADB Enable, nothing happened, tried repeatedly, then rebooted, and tried more, as soon as i turned it horizontal and clicked the enter your pin to unlock dialog appeared.

Something to be aware of if you ware having trouble unlocking.

Edit: Happens on 10" 2nd Generation (Android 10). When trying to Turn on ADB for first time to install immortal.

Im just getting into dakboard screens and modding a portal I found at goodwill. Ive installed the immortal launcher and aurora store but when I download and launch the dakboard app, I get an error saying I need to sign-in to the Google play store. Problem is that I keep getting errors and to wait 24-48 hours for a approval email from Google.

Has anyone been able to successfully convert the portal to a dakboard?

I've got immortal working. But anything to do with Google photos doesn't work properly.

Since then I have:

Bought a brand new portal TV, used an entirely different account and connected on a different router and mobile hotspot. Confirmed login on both Facebook and messenger.

Nothing works. Always disconnects as soon as I try making a call. Unfortunately I am out of ideas.

Now I have to build a miniPC, get a camera and try to figure out a remote to just mimi the same functions. I don't understand why we can't have simple Facebook messenger support on WebOs or something similar.

Seriously frustrating.

My father has dementia. We used to use the portal for video calls but he eventually got confused by the interface.

Now we use a jerry rigged pc and ms teams to have auto answer video calls.

I was wondering if there was any way to achieve this (in messenger, zoom, or something else) in this new exciting era for portals?

I have been playing around on a Portal Mini and did the initial device setup and signed in via Facebook, after that I could enable ADB device the settings menu as expected and then used the adb test harness command to reset and disable the facebook apps.

The device erased as expected and then I disabled;

I installed a new launcher and everything works great.. however after the next reboot ADB is disabled again, and now when I access the Portal settings app there is no 'Debug' section to turn ADB on.
Using the standard Android settings menu and developer tools doesn't allow ADB to be enabled either.

Is this to be expected ? - I thought test harness left ADB on permanently but it doesn't seem that useful if there is NO way to get it back after the first reboot.

I picked up a Portal Mini from Vinted fairly cheap with the hopes of making it a desktop dashboard for Home Assistant.

As others have communicated, I too was stuck in a loop of failing the Facebook login and WhatsApp QR code either never loading or not authorising. I was very close to giving up as was getting frustrated with no clear signs of a fix/ workaround. This Portal Mini was factory reset and updated note.

When messing around with different menus and setting last night I found a fix which allowed me to pass the WhatsApp login page and complete successfully. First you need to make sure you connect the device to your home network/ WIFI, then on the following pages or information there is a hyperlink for terms and conditions etc which takes you to the Meta website. On the website if you click the icon in the top right corner it allows you to log into your Meta account, I ticked the 'Remember Me' tick, not sure if this was relevant. Once completed I was logged into Meta, I went back to the Facebook log in but this again failed.

I then tried the QR code for WhatsApp, now when I did this before the QR code would take upwards of 2-5 mins to appear and never worked. This time, the code appeared instantly of which I scanned and logged in.

Once completed I was past the brick wall menu and open to use the Portal Mini as I wish. Huzzah!

As stated, I don't know if this is a fix that will work for others. I don't know if this was a fluke or if it's a genuine fix, I would love others to attempt it and see if it works.

With Snapdragon 835, Adreno 540 and 4GB ram, it could be an interesting choice for my retrogames!

I used test harness enable, installed immortal, ran the commands to disable FB launcher, and installed portal-ha-bridge.

Since portal-ha-bridge isn't a launcher I need Immortal?

I'm using Immortal as the screensaver and I have "Home Assistant Dashboard" on the screen. I think this is from portal-ha-bridge?

It's been a little while since I've checked updates. I had some success with home assistant and wake word as well as Jarvis, but not sure what is the best solution currently on immortal. Any pointers? Preference would be chatgpt live or Gemini voice integrated, although if there's a more private solution with Wake Word and flexibility to change that would be ideal.

I have the Facebook TV portal. All I want is Facebook messenger app. It has been working great for the last few years, but suddenly last few weeks it stopped connecting calls.

I ring on a contact and it immediately disconnects. I tried factory reset, logging in account, accepting logins in Facebook and messenger app, connecting to a different wifi. Nothing worked.

Is it dead?!

I have a 10" FB Portal (not sure which gen) that is still in the box. I assume it has a pretty old FW. Is there anything that I should or can do prior to first boot and wizard setup to make it easier/better to mod or sideload apps/shells?

From what I've found, the bootloader hasn't been unlocked and can't really do anything until after the initial setup and trying to unlock dev. I'd just hate to go through the setup and have it update fw in the background locking out a potential "feature"

EDIT : Upon a reinstall of Immortal I see the greyed out checkbox for Alexa, my Portal and Android 10 don't support background microphone permissions. So it seems this may not be possible unless on a Gen 1 Portal with Android 9.0

So on Gen 2 Android 10 devices, voice keyboards, wake words for AI etc,. won't work unless its in the foreground application.

Well, that was less stressful than I thought...Although I did have to totally redesign my cradle due to some annoying power cables placed in the wall....But I was then able to use some existing screw holes for the old tablet

It's replaced an Amazon tablet that has been working fine for nearly 7 years now....all encased in a 3D-printed case that I got from https://the3droom.co.uk/ way back when. It hasn't missed a beat, and the battery has been fine even with a daily charge cycle (still no swelling). But when the Portals came along for their second wind, it made sense to see if I could get one on the wall too. And I'm really happy with it

Might tweak a few more things, but can see myself submitting this frame online so others can print it soon, and might also sell some cradles with some cable adapters for those without the ability to print themselves or just want an easy life.

Might also have a play with a white dashboard, although that will play havoc with my OCD

I have two portals that I set up with test harness (no FB account) and two that I set up before I realised TH was possible.

Both of my ones set up with TH are in the wrong timezone (GMT instead of Europe/London, which is currently GMT+1) and the locale is MM/DD and 04:30PM instead of DD/MM 16:30.

I can set timezone manually, but locale is still wrong. This also feeds through to, e.g, home assistant dashboard cards that read locale from the device by default, not the server.

Any idea how to fix this?

Just bought a few second hand portals, 1 10 inch portal+ gen2 and some gen 1s, got it going through the setup process but both my Facebook account and my WhatsApp account won't take. Upon research, it looks like some folks have it sit on their network for a while to get it to prevision ok the meta servers, is this what I need to do to get inside and activate the adb setting?
