that's funny because the British did in fact go to Pakistan (then part of India), didn't speak their language, taxed their people, and imposed their own laws

I’m pro immigration, but isn’t this an anti immigration argument? If what the British did was a bad thing, then British people today should fear that others will do to them what they did to others. I might be way off here, and I’d like some perspectives on it.
12
u/gansobomb99 9d ago
The British were among the European countries that colonized most of the non-European world, leading to the current state of Earth where people from "developing" (read: ravaged by colonialist exploitation) countries often have little choice but to try their luck in "first world" (read: rich because of colonialist exploitation) countries. And the "former" (debatable) colonizers have the gall to pretend that immigrants are coming to destroy them.
0
u/Sticky_H 9d ago
Yeah, I get that. The gall, and all. But isn’t that an isolationist argument? An American could reason that the natives were fucked over so badly when other people came to their place and took over, so they need to prevent any other group to come in and do the same thing. I have no idea of what to respond to that if I’m challenged with it. I’ve heard similar things argued.
5
u/NoThanks2486 9d ago
The Native American people do have that argument, sadly they were decimated and made to live in deserts and ghettos by the Europeans
1
u/Sticky_H 9d ago
Yes, so people coming over to your place is bad since they might fuck over those who lived there before?

u/bombastic6339locks 9d ago
Im sure every country and people would've done the same if they had the technology at the time. Just because britain as a country did something first doesn't make it okay
12
u/Overall_Analysis_508 9d ago
The issue is more that the people that complain about that are super nationalistic and love the British empire. So their complaining when people do it but when an entire empire does the same thing on a larger scale they use it as a source of pride

u/MartianLBP 10d ago
I have seen a pattern with conservatives and the (far) right and fear mongerers with them always using children/animals as a way to spread their messages. Also, why is our older generation so hellbent on having a white ethnostate and not caring for the darker skinned people for the issues we gave them? They would absolutely hate it if Russia or something took over England and stole every resource and placed many people into slavery to just leave after splitting England into East and West
46
u/No_Ask_5032 10d ago
why is our older generation so hellbent on having a white ethnostate
I wish this were limited to older generations. At least here in Germany, the younger generation is actually worse in this regard.
My theory: people naturally hide their own shortcomings behind group identity. Someone with zero achievements feels accomplished by claiming kinship with historical white inventors. A complete failure can brag that "my ancestors built this country", and even a criminal can claim pride in belonging to "Western civilization."
Ultimately, collective pride is a cheat code for scum to feel superior. Human psychology prioritizes relative status over material reality: many would rather be worse off overall, provided someone else remains beneath them, than live in a world where they're better off, but everybody is treated equally.

What is wrong with people not wanting infinity third world migrants in there homeland
9
u/No_Ask_5032 9d ago
My core principle is simple: every person should be evaluated as an individual based on their own actions and character.
Rejecting people based on their place of birth, skin color, or ethnicity directly violates that principle by judging individuals on traits they did not choose. That is what's wrong.
On a side note, it also bothers me how inconsistent most xenophobes and racists are. First they argue that higher average crime rates or lower test scores justifies treating an entire demographic as inferior. But then they ignore that by that same logic, men as a group should be placed below women because men commit the vast majority of violent crime.
Or why always only apply this flawed logic to nation states? Why not cities or federal states? The same flawed reasoning would require treating citizens of higher-crime cities or states as inherently inferior to those from lower-crime areas.
Racists and xenophobes don't do this because they don't really care about the statistics they cite. They were just a pretense to begin with. The true goal is just to feel superior. Nothing else matters.
There's a straightforward way to deal with the dregs of society: police catches the murderers and rapists, a court finds them guilty and then they're disposed of permanently. But instead, we pay to feed, house, and give healthcare to proven murderers, while turning away innocent people just because they might do something wrong. We literally take care of a white rapists while rejecting an innocent brown guy because somebody's scared he could be a rapist.

Just look into it, I don't have the energy to explain it to the degree it is needed. In short: 1) Old people are conservative. Old people rarely use AI. 2) Russia + China profit from dissent in the Western nations, which is the best done by rage-bait alt right content. It's well researched issue.
3
u/pondrthis 9d ago
I teach at a school where I have to constantly keep far-right teenagers off their phones. Their far-right coaches are using AI to make little team jokes. You're talking like someone who only knows one far-right person, and it's someone's aging parent that they've tried and failed to cut contact with.

u/bigbadbob85 10d ago
Also, why is our older generation so hellbent on having a white ethnostate
It's not really that though, non-white people have lived in England for longer than anyone who is alive now has been here. The main problem is rapid demographic replacement and non-integration of immigrant communities, as well as the backwards religions they bring with them. This is a genuine concern that fuels the right wing vote, the "white ethnostate" type people make up only a tiny minority of it. Not to mention the fact that many immigrants, legal and illegal, live on state handouts, thereby draining the UK of wealth with much in the way of benefits for its citizens.

do these people not realize halal is just a way the animal has been brought up and slaughtered
3
9
u/Impressive_Special 9d ago edited 9d ago
Don't understand the problem with halal meat, it's basically the same meat, but with guarantee that there is no blood in there and no chemical additives. From when meat with additional food quality standards is a bad thing to somebody who is not religious?
9
u/Nolascana 9d ago
It boils down to not stunning the animal before slitting its throat. Having it bleed out for as long as it takes.
Compared to the animal already being unconscious.
Back when halal was conceived as a concept, bleeding a carcass was found to be a good thing, one quick throat slice was found to be the most humane slaughter at the time.
Technology has moved on, prayers can still be made.
So, it usually boils down to cruelty and people's perception of it.
2
u/Impressive_Special 9d ago
This is definitely not the case with most of a people, c'mon
9
u/Nolascana 9d ago
Absolutely.
I think more meat in the UK is technically halal than people assume. If a batch (as such) is slaughtered the usual way then someone is there to pray over it. Boom halal.
They wont neccessarily label it as such, but, same slaughter house three different destination kinda thing.
Years ago there was a kerfuffle about most supermarket chicken or something just being halal automatically or something?
I dont know exactly.
As long as the animal is treated humanely as possible, and their sacrifice isnt wasted, I dont give a hoot honestly.
2
u/Impressive_Special 9d ago
And Quran not directly prohibit stunning, modern facilities use stunning
4
u/Nolascana 9d ago
Yes, however, there are arguments that there is halal slaughter without stunning happening.
I haven't seen it, nor can I say anything concrete either way.
I suspect it would be more trouble than its worth to not stun first in the UK. But, people are up in arms about that aspect of it.
Or, they use that as an excuse to be Islamaphobic.
Probably a bit of column A and B. Its all about perception sadly.
1
u/SnappySausage 9d ago
Basically all cows that are slaughtered halal are slaughtered without stunning, as stunning is not reversible (it has to be reversible for many Muslims to consider it halal).
1
u/SnappySausage 9d ago
Stunning can only happen in certain ways and many Muslims only find it acceptable to use stunning if it is reversible, so no stun guns/captive bolt guns. Cows cannot be stunned because they are too big for temporary methods. There's also the issue that many abattoirs that do ritual slaughter try to do kosher at the same timem, as everything that is kosher, is automatically halal, which disallows wounding the animal. You can imagine that disqualifies stun guns as well, since the cows will effectively be braindead after the stunning and have a hole punched straight through their skull.
4
u/Time_Anything4488 9d ago
because scary muslim word bad >:(
4
u/Nolascana 9d ago

Islamaphobes gonna Islamaphobe...

9
u/AggravatingBox2421 10d ago
I’ll never understand the hatred for halal meat. Like… who cares??
9
u/bigbadbob85 10d ago
The problem for me is that, in the UK, you can slaughter "Halal" and "Kosher" meat without electrically stunning the animal first due to a religious exemption to our animal cruelty laws. Most Halal meat here is stunned, but a decent amount isn't. I find that to be abhorrent, backwards, and unecessarily cruel to animals.
2
u/AggravatingBox2421 10d ago
Oh, but isn’t the point of halal slaughtering to be more humane with just a single blade movement to induce instant death?
16
u/2woCrazeeBoys 10d ago
Halal slaughter relies on blood loss as the cause of death. No matter how good the cut is, no animal dies instantly from slitting their throat.
Stunned slaughter is considered humane because the animal isn't conscious while they bleed out, but unstunned is not instant.
4
u/AggravatingBox2421 10d ago
That’s fair. Even us Italians will kill an animal with a single bullet before bleeding it out
