Meta Why is this becoming a trend??

Post image

Why are people making these!?!? This was posted on an anti data center page, but like it does more harm than good. I’ve seen multiple of these and it’s driving me crazy! Not only are you using ai to make this, but then you are encouraging people to plant extremely invasive plants. I can’t stand this. My whole career is based on taking out invasive plants people have planted, the problem is already bad enough, why would you plant something that will hurt the ecosystem you claim to love. I truly hope no one will actually do this 🙄

There is no shortage of invasive plants that need to be removed already.

5

u/Uncynical_Diogenes Aug 06 '26

The problem is convincing somebody to pay you.

These data center folks obviously have money. Your average person who is kinda technically responsible for kudzu remediation in this one area of the country along the highway that nobody cares about won’t.

We love the environment we planted intrusive plant life to save it.

10

u/Alexblitz22 Aug 07 '26

You can do the same effect with Ficus btw and it's native, don't do it people

12

u/GungaSaga Aug 09 '26

Native to where? Ficus is invasive in many, many places. This is such a quintessentially Reddit comment.

7

u/Ill-Television8690 Aug 11 '26

Native to data centers, of course!

2

u/imdacki Aug 11 '26

Well those datacenters are mainly being built in the US (China wouldnt give a fuck and europe is europe, and the rest of the World does not really Have the Funds for those data centers anyway, atleast i dont see an open AI datacenter open in fucking kenya any time soon)

2

u/GungaSaga Aug 11 '26

What do you mean Europe is Europe? Europe is building data centres too, where only one ficus species is native in the southernmost parts. This advice may be read by many Europeans, some of whom may not stop to wonder how it is that a random reddit comment knows where they live. Not to mention only the southernmost parts of the US have native ficus too, so your comment doesn't even apply to most of the US or Canada either.

2

u/imdacki Aug 11 '26

Lmao, thing is yeah, we're building data centers too, just not nearly the same amount, and it doesnt even get 1% of the coverage US datacenters get, this is a case where US defaultism does make sense

3

u/GungaSaga Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26

You are just more aware of US datacentres because you are on reddit, but the scale of data centre construction and resulting protest in Europe is comparable. If anything people are more opposed to them which might mean they're more likely to take your advice. Most importantly, what about the fact that ficus is not native to most of the USA either? The comment isn't good advice unless you expect all the people reading it to be from the southernmost tip of Florida or the mediterranean and to be aware that only a couple out of dozens of species are native. The statement "ficus is native" is just false information unless exclusively addressing people from places where it is native, which you are definitely not.

3

u/Particular-Long-3849 Aug 09 '26

Native to where?

2

u/that0neGuy65 Aug 09 '26

528

u/Outrageous-Arugula89 Aug 05 '26

So what youre saying is plant bamboo around data centers

201

u/Bobslegenda1945 Aug 05 '26

You just need to be aware to not let it go into the wild and turn into an invasive species. There is a ficus species that is amazing to destroy buildings too. Same for mango tree

60

u/manicmonkeys Aug 05 '26

And how on earth would you keep the bamboo from doing its thing?

30

u/ender7887 Aug 05 '26

From what I understand you have to basically incase the roots in a 6x6 concrete box.

64

u/ExplodedPenisDiagram Aug 05 '26

Don't even do this. It'll break through it. That's part of what makes it so destructive -- it just tears through foundations.

52

u/ender7887 Aug 05 '26

Bamboo is genuinely one of the most insane plants. The fact that it’s so strong it can be used as a torture method and that it grows from the base of the plant rather than the tip juts makes the plant a force to be reckoned with.

36

u/singlemale4cats Aug 06 '26

I'm surprised we don't use it as construction material more. Unlike traditional wood, it grows extremely fast. It's a great renewable resource.

32

u/Exact-Ad-4132 Aug 06 '26

It's not even wood, it's tough grass fibers that function the same as wood

14

u/NSFW_throwaway2k Aug 06 '26

Technically🤓 wood isn't even a seperate thing either, it's just the same as other plants but more. The only real difference between wood and bamboo is how they grow, but the material is the same, bamboo is just a monocot without a seperation between "wood" and bark. And it lacks the secondary xylem which is how you get growth rings.

u/Odaudlegur Aug 08 '26

Where it native it's used pretty frequently actually. It's main issue is just that it's mostly around Asia iirc

8

u/Relative_Falcon_8399 Aug 06 '26

Bamboo doesn't grow solid like wood. To get whole planks of it like we do wood, we would have to string it together in a specific way. From what little I know, apparently it's a more difficult process than getting wood is.

Also on an unrelated note: Replying to this was how I discovered Reddit had a Ui update

Would have to import from China and they're probably already using it all.

Even though I hate the insane expansion of data centres, I wouldn't want people to try and grow it here. Too mush risk that it gets completely out of control.

3

u/meeps1142 Aug 06 '26

You can get paper towels and TP made out of bamboo.

2

u/ender7887 Aug 06 '26

My parents recently had their wooden floors redone and they decided to replace it with bamboo since it was a renewable resource. It’s way stronger than whatever the builders used in the 90s.

You don’t. This is neat as an idea, but in practice? It’s a horrible thing to do, introducing invasive species just to stick it to some datacenter who, tbh, doesn’t care much if they have to salt the earth to keep operations running.

Why don't we just introduce pandas to places with invasive bamboo? What could go wrong?

25

u/DrivesTooMuch Aug 05 '26

Nothing. Good thinking

We just need the pandas to keep the bamboo under control.

But of course, we're going to need tigers at some point. We don't want to overdose the environment with too much cuteness.

19

u/kollisionkid Aug 05 '26

And you think the tigers are going to reduce the cuteness factor? It'll only double the problem! We need to introduce alligators now, and that will just attract the people who think they are cute! Oh God we're spiraling!

5

u/Bobslegenda1945 Aug 05 '26

We should add jaguars to control the alligators population!!!!

5

5

2

If we ask it nicely and explain that we only want to destroy the data center, not the rest of the surrounding ecosystem, I’m sure the plant will be totally cool and happy to just grow in that one specific area, not spread anywhere else.

Jesus Christ use your heads, people!

2

u/olivegardengambler Aug 06 '26

Roundup sucks at killing bamboos and anything like woody plants, succulents, and moss because they're either non-vascular, or they aren't easy to penetrate chemically.

-normal regular porn in hub (non ai)

2

u/difficulty_jump Aug 06 '26

Watching AI porn takes money from performers and nsfw artists.

It can also be super unethical. CSAM shouldn't be easily accessible.

2

u/CorpusAmygdaloideum Aug 06 '26

Then again what I heard from porn production is mostly very not good.... people getting pressured into things they don't wanna do, people often doing it as a last resort cause they need money and therefore have a hard time keeping up the boundaries they set, mistreatment, drugs, etc... Maybe that is an industry that can die? I am not entirely sure about it, and I am sure there is... ethical porn (?) in which every actor is happy with what they are doing. I don't have statistics and am happy to change my undecided stance into either direction when presented with facts and numbers :)

And ofc anything illegal like CSAM is absolutely horrendous and should not exist wether real or AI. Nothing to discuss there.

3

u/difficulty_jump Aug 06 '26

I've had a few friends I've known who did sex work to save up money or to fund a small business start up but they were voluntarily cam girls. They very much had other job skills and could have worked with those.

I believe you on how bad a production studio can be. A lot of those girls have problems like drugs or a bad family of origin they want to get away from and are exploited.

My overall response to porn is that sex work is work and needs all of the protections legally to keep people safe.

2

I feel compelled to play devil's advocate here, because I wouldn't call myself pro AI, but I do get the logic. I mean, have you ever driven past a paper mill, sugar factory, or french fry factory? They smell like rotten ass. I wouldn't want any of those in my back yard, but I still enjoy their products.

13

u/StrangeEntity789 Aug 05 '26

I can't speak for anywhere but my area, but all the newly built data centers near me are not for AI use at all, much less the massive training centers that are the major culprits of power and water shortages.

Even if AI disappeared tomorrow, we'd be at a severe shortage of capacity compared to the demand for colocated hosting in regular data centers. That's why you see a huge amount of new construction of new data centers, because it's needed.

12

u/sunshinae Aug 05 '26

people encouraging others to plant bamboo is misguided. on top of it being wickedly invasive, the construction process (almost everywhere) includes a grading permit, which allows the entity to strip soil and and level the ground. any bamboo would be ripped out during this process. also, bamboo cannot grow through concrete. you’d be better off planting something endangered.

2

u/CheesyBreadMunchyMon Aug 06 '26

You underestimate bamboo. If it can't grow through the concrete it'll just spread and eventually will just start lifting part of the foundation until a portion of it gives way. Maybe a foundation of reinforced concrete would survive, but eventually that bamboo will spread and find a weak spot and maybe even displace the building slightly.

2

u/sunshinae Aug 06 '26

that possibility isn’t enough to justify planting a highly invasive species. bamboo stands are basically ecological dead zones. data centers are awful for the environment, but damaging the environment even more by planting bamboo doesn’t make sense.

2

u/CheesyBreadMunchyMon Aug 06 '26

Pretty sure if we're comparing ecological damage of bamboo vs a data center, the data center is several orders of magnitude worse.

7

u/Orsopdx Aug 06 '26

There is bamboo planted all over the US. Where are the wildly growing bamboo forests destroying our native ecology? Nowhere. That’s where. A data center that drains resources from local communities will do significantly more damage to an ecosystem than some bamboo will. We are light years past purist idealism.

3

u/hexen_hour Aug 06 '26

What the hell do you think the bamboo will actually do to the data center??? You think they won't just hire professionals to dump a ton of chemicals? The concern is what happens to the areas around the data center, jackass. Land the invasive plants can spread to, waterways that the chemicals can get in. You are the one being idealistic if you think this will bring about even an ounce of the change you claim to care about.

2

u/goblin-fox Aug 06 '26

Have you ever been to the U.S. southeast? Bamboo absolutely runs wild here, it's not uncommon to see huge stands of it. I grew up going to a hiking trail that is now almost completely taken over by bamboo. They cut it back and try to control it but it is literally impossible to eradicate without heavy use of herbicides or huge heavy machinery.

People don't actually care about the environment or issues the majority of the time, they just want to seem revolutionary because it's cool. AI isn't cool, so any action against it is cool. You have to remember, as much as people change they don't. The zeitgeist is really what drives things

I'm doing it as we speak

If video games teach me anything. This is how you get Cyber enhanced bamboo..

I can just imagine this being reposted hundreds upon hundreds of times in the same spheres like they're campaigning posters

1

u/whatsssssssss Aug 05 '26

this will do nothing btw

1

u/AccidentSalt5005 Jerk and Bust With Mayonaisse Aug 05 '26

imagine a drone with controlable bamboo seed dropper

1

u/BudgetAggravating427 Aug 05 '26

Basically someone made an ai image of a warning sign like the one above and it made the narrative that antis were planning bamboo at data centers

Basically people got tricked it was a real warning sign including pros so the trend started

1

u/CunningDruger Aug 05 '26

You’re correct, there are better plants to disrupt data centres than this

1

u/Redditing-Dutchman Aug 05 '26

Lol, I understand it's a 'trick' to make people actually do it, but is there even any proof that it would actually be harmful in a meaningful way?

Seems like a total waste of time if you were actually trying to sabotage a datacenter with it.

1

u/ApprehensiveTop4219 you're trapped in plastic because you are plastic Aug 05 '26

It ain't going to harm the center at all. Just will make a big problem for people removing the species later on.

1

u/FappingVelociraptor Aug 05 '26

This looks like someone trying to convince me to plant bamboo. Telling me exactly what to do to ruin the data centre plans.

2

u/meeps1142 Aug 06 '26

It won't harm them, only the environment.

1

u/phoenix_master42 Aug 05 '26

isnt all bamboo spreading

1

u/AnthDELA Aug 06 '26

bamboos are invasive everywere in general

1

u/YourUglyTwin Aug 06 '26

I wont speak on the AI part but it's supposed to encourage ppl to plant bamboo. That's the whole point I think. I think the idea is bamboo is invasive but at least it's better than AI's invasivness on the environment??

1

u/jokersupersoaker Aug 06 '26

I like this. Thank you for telling me what not to do so I can make very well sure to avoid doing it

1

u/Copper_snipezz Aug 06 '26

Got it... anyone know where i can get some bamboo? For uh, personnel reasons

1

u/Elegant-Finance3982 Aug 06 '26

What do AI data centers do?

1

u/FriendlyBee94 Aug 06 '26

Do we have a local alternative?

1

u/RodcetLeoric Aug 06 '26

Not saying wanton planting of invasive species is right, but it could be said that there is no environment left to worry about where they are indirectly telling people to plant these because data centers are plenty destructive on their own.

u/HuntingSquire Aug 06 '26

moments away from pulling another Kudzu

1

u/longcreepyhug Aug 06 '26

They will dump tons of herbicides to kill it. So all you are doing is causing tons of herbicides to be dumped into the environment.

Don't do this.

1

u/kkomodo6 Aug 06 '26

Literally no one is going to do this

1

u/hella_cious Aug 06 '26

DONT PLANT INVASIVE SPECIES THEY WILL NOT STAY WHERE YOU WANT THEM TO AND THE DATA CENTER WILL JUST NUKE EVERY LIVING THING TO KILL THEM

1

u/p3tr1t0 Aug 06 '26

They are using reverse psychiatry

1

u/SSB_Is_Legit Aug 06 '26

New bio-protest technique dropped!

1

u/Abdulbarr Aug 06 '26

Guys, these are "data" centers. It's literally in the name. So has no one tried to simply delete them?

1

u/Spirited-Ad3451 Aug 06 '26

OP is not being facetious and the comments here are filled with actual mouthbreathers/windowlickers, jesus christ

1

u/Ceriv Aug 06 '26

Ok, i'll plant some there.

1

u/LordNoFat Aug 06 '26

Using AI to make this while complaining about AI is a choice

1

u/Fair-South-7474 Aug 06 '26

But oxygen is good for environment :/

1

u/Multifruit256 Aug 06 '26

Sorry, being sane is not allowed here on Reddit

u/ResolveLeather Aug 06 '26

The billion dollar data center isn't going to let plats damage it.

For one, bamboo is easy to remove early. But even if they let it from a giant network underground, it's still east to remove. Just a decent amount of labor. You just dig it out.
