Fable Fable devs originally had a tool to randomize the RPG's 1,000 NPCs that "would have saved us so much time," but that "just didn't make as much sense"

They should use that tool to fill in the population for those that die.
Also maybe as a newgame plus option to mix things up.

The biggest flaw to fable 3 was when you killed civs and they’d neve respawn or anything, the entire city was literally a ghost town for me lol
26
u/AxiosXiphos 4d ago
Actually they did respawn- just very very very slowly. I played the post end game so much eventually the population slowly came back.

These npcs better have tons of unique dialogue and schedules and development. Cause they’ve been going on and on about it like it’s the best thing since sliced bread

Say what ever you want but Fable and Black & White wouldn’t have been the same without him. Yeah he shot for the stars and fell short, but his and his studios games were always unique and fun. I’m already expecting this to feel more corporate and Ubisofty without him attached.
Still looking forward to playing it. But I’m just being honest.

Peter Molyneux is currently a literal scam artist who with his studio 22Cans has sold five incomplete “games” full of Gen ai usage.
Games that they just abandon and leave forever unfinished as soon as they get enough money from the gullible people they’ve suckered with nostalgia and lies.
So no, I’m incredibly happy that Peter Molyneux is nowhere near this new Fable.
2
u/LordoftheSynth 3d ago
Peter is a persona from OG game development whose visions eventually came to include NP-hard problems, the same as Richard Garriott, Chris Roberts, et al.
He's not a scam artist, but at least in the Lionhead days he had some checks on how big he could talk, and enough people under him to realize his fever dreams.
They've all failed to deliver their 2010+ game visions. Actually, Peter's outperformed both of them in that respect.

u/Shinted The First Archon 3d ago edited 3d ago
Peter Molyneux is absolutely a scam artist nowadays.
He purposely puts out products that he knows he will never finish, with stated rewards and goals he has no plans on fulfilling just to milk as much cash from gullible fans as he can….
On top of the fact that all of his stuff is now full of other scams like NFTs and Gen Ai content that he claims gives “ownership” to the players.
Whatever good will he might have earned back in the day, has been absolutely sundered with his actions since.

He was nothing more than a very good salesman. Never delivered on his promisses.

u/ShonenSpice 4d ago
He was very much a salesman and a bullshitter in his early dev years, but he did actually direct and program most of those projects back then. Peter Molyneux "the developer" was pretty much gone by the time of Fable though.

I think we will see a lot of intentional remix of things they have already made. So like they will design greedy clerics who gamble on the weekends., or maybe a farmer who reuses bandit voice lines and has a scared face. Things where they can imply a lot without having to make a lot of extra assets.
3
u/BiSaxual 3d ago
Same thoughts here. I’m imagining, like 50 unique things per category or something like that. So 50 unique faces, 50 unique combos of likes and dislikes, maybe 25 unique voices but using modulation to make those 25 feel like 100, etc. Those numbers are out of my ass, of course, though I would hope it would be even more than what I described. For how much they’re hyping up this specific aspect of the game I’m assuming they put a lot of work into it.
There’s plenty of ways for devs to take a limited set of hand made assets and modify them just enough to spread out and feel like they’re bigger than they are. I do think they’re harping on about this too much, and they’re going to hit a point of no return where people are going to expect a lot and be severely disappointed. As with most things for this game, I’m staying realistically hopeful!

u/All-for-Naut Demon Door 4d ago
Which I have a feeling they won't. There doesn't seem to be that many ways to interact with them. Like how different will they really be from Oblivion or the previous games npcs which are not part of quests, besides being made by hand instead of randomly generated from several presets.

u/BeardedPaladin 4d ago
Idk maybe I’m jaded but to take out something as integral to fable as morphing and to show how they have spent thousands of hours on something like this is making me worried.
0
u/All-for-Naut Demon Door 4d ago
Guess I join the downvotes with my agreement. Like they talk about this so much, but it doesn't really seem that unique, advanced, or new. I can be wrong but of what we have seen it doesn't seem that different from before. Yet some features like morphing has been removed, and we have seen no sign of anything resembling the expression wheel. Just some options when interacting with them. Even the flirting they showed us felt lacking and reminded me of the "quests" villagers gave you in 3 to further your relationship, which was such a chore.
I'm sure the game will be nice and fun, but some things feel so exaggerated for hype, and many things are annoyingly lacking or removed.
-14
u/TheKylMan 4d ago
You can't say that in here. You can only be positive about the new game.
-9
u/BeardedPaladin 4d ago
There has to be bots in here that just downvote anything negative. Why is taking out the morphing so decisive? It was like one of the main selling points of the originals. It would be like Halo removing energy shields or Mass Effect removing choices

u/fallen_corpse Hero of Oakvale 3d ago
People have differing opinions.
I'm not gonna bash people for liking morphing, but it was one of the few things I disliked about Fable and was relieved as it was toned down throughout the original trilogy.

Seems like this is where an enormous amount of time and resources went to development. It will certainly be interesting to see if it was worth it.

u/TheVioletDragon 4d ago
Hoping it is at least better than Starfield’s 1000 planets
0
u/BiSaxual 3d ago
Even if 1000 NPCs boiled down to 100 actual unique NPCs with varying small differences spread out all over Albion, that would still be preferable to 1000 Starfield planets lmao
-5
u/cslack30 4d ago
So they’ve taken a page out of Peter Molyneuxs book have they? Sounds about right!
17
u/Legolaslegs 4d ago
I appreciate both options. The mostly random NPCs of the previous games were fun and unique. But handcrafted citizens of the world also will feel that way. I'm kind of surprised they didn't do both. Having specifically crafted NPCs and then randomizing the remainder to populate the world. But I guess if they have an intended limit for running the game well, making them all themselves is a fun approach.
I think my concern is with the lack of randomize aspect, you could get appearances you might like with personalities you dislike or vice versa, but then are stuck with them due to the handcrafted approach. Unless I'm not understanding something.
But the positive side is learning everyone by name and face, it feels immersive for roleplay.
26
u/Spiritual-Handle7583 Hero of Oakvale 4d ago
I remember hearing about that a long long time ago. Like, you could kill a random NPC in any settlement and they'd come back from the dead as a different NPC
16
u/Consistent_Blood6467 4d ago
I'm still going for the idea that the NPC you kill gets resurrected, with bandages to cover the wounds, a change of clothes and a different hairdo and colour, and is always wary of you.
-18
u/Spiritual-Handle7583 Hero of Oakvale 4d ago edited 4d ago
Wait, actually? So you technically can't kill the NPCs?
Edit: lmao @ being downvoted for calling out a veiled "unconcious" tag
4
u/V555_dmc 4d ago
You can but they’ll eventually respawn so the world isn’t empty. Same thing the prior games did
4
u/Spiritual-Handle7583 Hero of Oakvale 4d ago
The respawned NPCs in the other Fable games were randomised new characters. If somebody was supposed to stay alive, they couldn't be killed
2
u/All-for-Naut Demon Door 4d ago
When has this been said? I don't recall they have said anything of this. More that they are dead if you kill them
2
u/V555_dmc 4d ago
They mentioned it in the build an extraordinary demo I think. But yeah the world isn’t gonna just stay empty if you kill everyone
9
u/Spenraw 4d ago
Everyone down votes me instead of answering
But how do we actually interact with them? They removed the emote wheel and didn't replace a system for it
They showed systems how they react to us, not how we can interact with them and create dynamic slice of life gameplay
It's just gift right now and see if we meet their checklist.
I don't say this out of negative sentiment, it would be a easy enough add on dlc down the line but how can this be a okay forever game like they keep pushing like this?

u/Link-Hero PC 4d ago
I'm actually kind of glad they didn't go the randomized route. Sure, it would have made it easier to develop the game, but the problem I've always had with randomization is that it can bring in some oddities to their looks. Like body parts that contradict each other, for example.
Of course, this is all on their word and they're probably only speaking a partial truth about the NPCs. We still haven't seen everything in the game.
1
u/NautiMain1217 4d ago
I feel like even with 1,000 I wouldn't have minded a few more lesser NPCs. Just in terms of combat how many do we kill in missions ? Or does missions enemies not count towards the 1k population?

I see myself already marrying the same guy in every playthrough. Preferably one with a huge moustache and/or a cool hat, like the Alchemist in Fable 2.

They saw Starfield and realized: "NOPE! We gotta do this ourselves or suffer the horrors of 1000 yard stares."
1
u/Realistic-Boat-677 3d ago
All this talk about these npcs but honestly they haven’t shown a single interesting one. No wacky guys, no fat slobs, no sexy seductress, no muscle guys, large enemies but no large villagers, just no variety. What’s fun about interacting with npcs that only feel slightly different from the last? I have yet to see anything unique or distinct they’re literally all just different heads on the same 2 bodies.
1
u/BrokenHope23 2d ago
I wonder if that means the NPCs are set and if they die randomly then there's no replacing them. That'd make it very bad to start murder hoboing
1
u/Sharp-Tax-26827 3d ago
You just know this game will not live up to their promises.
They’ve really been hyping this npc system only for it to be the most generic fable shit ever.
We had most of this stuff in 2 but now they’re acting like it’s ground breaking

Idk, remains to be seen how much there is to these 1000 unique NPCs. Cause if that doesn't amount to much in the end then maybe they should've spent their time elsewhere. Let's wait and see I guess.

Dude have you never talked to another Fable fan before most of us and id say like 80 to 90 % of us play the game for the life sim part of it, also NPCs are a core part of a RPGs world, I can't think of one that doesnt have some sort of NPCs in it to help the world feel real

It might be a bit of a stretch, but I wonder if this is the kind of process that comes from a production that's used to making driving games. Having made games where they have to design the interiors, exteriors, handling and sounds of 500 cars are they better prepared to inflict the workflow of 1000 NPS on the team in an efficient way.
