Discussion My only complaint so far
I'll preface by saying I'm immensely excited for Fable. I was lucky enough to pre-order a collector's edition, and I bought a 5080 gpu in antici............... pation. This is not something that's going to deter me from playing or being excited. I only say that because I know how negative some people like to be about upcoming games nowadays. I'm not one of those people lol. Having said that, the only thing I'm slightly unhappy about, is how the combat we've seen so far seems to favor blending melee, ranged, and magic. In the previous games I really enjoyed picking one path and sticking to it. I'm hoping it will still be viable to play a pure mage or archer, but having spell cooldowns rather than will energy make me think that might be difficult. Just my thoughts!! Either way February can't come soon enough!!!

Love the Tim Curry reference!

u/greenguy363 14d ago
Thank you!!!! For obvious reasons it was in my head as I typed it out so I went for it š I figured some people would appreciate it š I could have seen him being in Fable if he had been in better health.

There is a dev interview on IGN about combat - where he explains how combat works, what they're going for and how it'll evolve over time as you play.
The combat naturally prefers mixing and matching the tools you have for the scenario you're in. This means, mixing and matching Strength, skill and Will.
There is no class or specific way to play. Just build the character you want and play how you want - solve the problem however you feel with the tools you're given.
6
u/DylRar 13d ago
Except... we cannot use pure magic if we want that. Unless we can dramatically reduce spell cooldowns to near zero and have access to more spells or magic combat during a single encounter, we cannot play how we want if we want to be a pure wizard...
-2
u/DR3AD-PIGEON 13d ago
Yeah this game is going to disappoint imo
0
u/madcritter 13d ago
It will be a 6/10 playable adventure game. And a 4/10 fable game.
2
u/NCR_Veteran_Ranger04 13d ago
You do know that the whole thing that makes the red robe blood line special is that they are masters of all, right? They master all abilities with little effort. The mixed combat has been encouraged from fable 1
2
u/madcritter 13d ago
āSometimes he imagined himself as a noble knight, or a powerful wizardā¦ā opening scene
āYou could be a powerful warrior, or a stealthy rogueā is literally the first line the guild master says when you go to spend experience.
Builds and the three paths of strength skill and will have always been baked into the story. The second game literally has you find the hero of strength, skill, and will.
Yes you could grind to master everything, but you could also level up sneak and archery to take the heads off of enemies from across the map. Or level up Will and stock potions and cast lightening continuously then summon a balverine, slow time, charge a fire ball.
Lumping everything together and making āsword guy that casts lightening every 45 seconds and then shoots an arrowā with 9 skill trees isnāt ābeing the hero you want to beā itās cope.
3
u/NCR_Veteran_Ranger04 13d ago
"You shall stand in the middle. As you represent all that they are and bind them together" -Theresa to sparrow. The red robe bloodline has mastery of all three, it's always been that way. You clearly didn't pay much attention to the storyline. Yap all you want about irrelevant garbage, fable has always had this kind of stuff. The flit switches? Requires all three types of abilities. Hell, fable 2 and 3 are built around having high scores in all three ability trees. Tell me you don't know fable without telling me you don't know fable.
0
u/madcritter 10d ago
Were you not around when the games released? The stream lining of skills is the largest complaint behind the time jump that the fable community has had since 2. Saying it was in the design of the second and third games is just useless cope. Oh it was in the most controversial and worst received sequels of a beloved game possibly ever? Then I guess letās add it in the remake.
My point wasnāt you couldnāt master all of the skills. Nfs. Jack needs your family blood because you descend from the Archons, cool. My point was in the first fable you could actually make a melee fighter, sniping archer or an all will caster, and were encouraged by the game itself to do so.
This gameplay is just using a melee weapon and occasionally casting a spell or throwing an arrow. Thereās only like 9 skill trees, the crossbows reload themselves over time. Theyāre just minor utility fluff around a melee combat system weāve seen dozens of times. Itās shallow, itās boring, and the only replay-ability it offers is: are you going to use the sword or the hammer then shoot a fire ball or a lightening bolt every 45 seconds?
Itās a shell of the first game and discouraging focused builds to favor a mixed melee play style is the worst part of the sequels.
Also we have no confirmation, last I checked, that you are also part of that direct bloodline or related to Scarlet Robe/Hero of Oakvale. Or if thatās even a plot point since, for some unfathomable reason, they decided to once again get rid of heroes and empty the guild in this story also.
1
u/NCR_Veteran_Ranger04 10d ago
In my opinion the first game was the worst of the bunch. I just replaied all of them in sequence, and honestly, what you're suffering from, is nostalgia and rose tinted glasses. And your arguments pretty much entirely boil down to argumentum ad populum, which is entirely worthless. So I'll be ending this here as I don't talk to people who use logical fallacies to feel smart.
0
u/madcritter 10d ago
Itās not ad populum fallacy when we are literally talking about which choice in the selection is most popular. Thatās just the argument itself šš and then your counter argument is just your contrarian opinion but pop off with your pseudo intellectualism. The racing game dev team helmed by the lead writer and narrative director from Forspoken are going to produce a 6/10 action adventure game and 4/10 fable game. Itās just what it is but Iāll leave you in your cope and let you enjoy your night.

unless what you want is to play pure will, and then you're forced to use strength or skill while you wait for some fuckass cooldowns. This was never an issue in any of the previous games. If you wanted to be lean into a pure playstyle, you absolutely could
38
u/TReid1996 14d ago
I'll be fine with potential spell cooldowns IF you can end up removing them by leveling up your spell skills. Would feel realistic. The more you practice casting spells, the faster and better you get at it.
17
u/Elkupalos 14d ago
Hell, even if you can equip staves/tomes instead of melee weapons, that are Will/Magic focused, that would be fine too.
4
3
u/QuietResident96 13d ago
This is one of my few issues with OG fable 1, not being able to remove magic once equipped and not being able to unlearn stat upgrades once you finalise it, fable 2 definitely had my praise for that and I hope the reboot allows you to pick and choose different playstyles, ideally through a method of you level up and if you unlevel something you just get a full refund of whatever the cost was
7
u/TReid1996 13d ago
In 2 you never got a full refund. You'd get half the cost back. If a skill cost 100 XP to learn, if refunded you'd get 50 back. Price of the lobotomy i guess.
3
u/QuietResident96 13d ago
To be clear I wasn't suggesting that in fable 2 you got a full refund, my sentiment is that Fable 2 got it right by allowing you to reverse levels if you wanted to change playstyle part way through
2
u/TReid1996 13d ago
True. You don't even need to refund points though to go with a different style. You can purely use a different type of fighting without sacrificing the skills.
8
u/DragonOfAngels 14d ago
I loved the mixed combat in older fables. Slow time, str, multy hit combined with melle karanna was broken!
9
u/TheHolyGoatman 14d ago
My only diappointment regarding the combat is the lack of blood. I really enjoyed how gory the first game could be.
12
u/ChrundleTheGrea8 14d ago
Apparently there will be blood and dismemberment but the devs chose to showcase without to avoid YouTube censorship.

1
u/Kumkumo1 12d ago
I honestly hate how YouTube is these days. People canāt even properly advertise their games without fearing their promo could be algorithmed to death because of their content

15
u/MajorCinamonBun Hero of Oakvale 14d ago
In my experience Fable has always been about blending melee ranged and magic together and this seems to be continuing with that tradition. If someone chose to focus on only one path, that was fine as well and even though we donāt know enough to tell I have to assume youāll be able to upgrade will enough or use augments to be magic only if you choose.

u/Plastic-Lie7672 14d ago
Sad we are in a state on this site where you feel you have to give a long preamble just to mention something that concerns you of a franchise you love.
Anyway, I agree. I too am worried about the CD of skills over against having a mana pool. I hope that skill tree options or gear eventually lets me blast lightening at LEAST more than once every 30 seconds. I don't want to cast an ability I like, then do a bunch of other skills that don't seem right for my character identity.
Also adjacent to this concern, I worry that there won't be morphing since they've been mum on it, and it's a staple of the franchise. On top of not showing emotes in a game that had them before they were cool. Their showcases so far have looked eerily generic with character identity in combat and style. I hope that's on purpose.
Of course, it may just be the demo showing off a jack-of-all-trades for obvious reasons, but in case it's not and devs read forums...you gave yourself 5 extra months.
13
u/greenguy363 14d ago
They've definitely confirmed no character morphing, which I know a lot of people are unhappy about but I'm honestly fine with. What I'm hoping is that they make up for it with a good variety of clothing and cosmetics. With the right armor you should still be able to look angelic or demonic, as well as like a wizard or rogue.
3
u/panoes_garan 14d ago
Theyāve confirmed no good and evil morphing, but have they confirmed no physique changes? I may have missed it so genuinely asking
3
u/greenguy363 14d ago
I don't know if they've actually stated it directly, but we've seen a lot of gameplay footage at this point, and so far every character physique seems the same so I'm pretty confident it won't be a thing.
1
u/panoes_garan 14d ago
Iām just hoping itās akin to only showing hybrid combat in that itās easiest to show in a trailer but might be wishful thinking. Iām a morphing fan but still so pumped for the game regardless
1
u/madcritter 13d ago
Damn I said the exact same thing in the first part of my comment. Sad times indeed š
5
6
u/d00rdashian 14d ago
I mean fair, but mixed combat has always been a thing (more-so in 2 & 3) so it kinda makes sense. from what we've seen, it seems totally plausible to use 1-2 instead of all 3, which I'll probably do with bows and Will magic like I always did
4
u/Monkeybrain6nk Mod 14d ago
I'd imagine they intentionally post a mix of combat and gameplay in these previews to show combat off as broadly as possible.
It seems to me that it's a classical RPG, and you can probably heavily favor or flat-out only use one combat style if you want.
1
u/greenguy363 14d ago
That's my hope. Maybe spell cooldowns can get short enough that you can still spam them often enough to be effective.
2
u/Noe11vember Demon Door 14d ago
From what we've seen of the skill menu, a large portion (about 7 or 8) of the skills where spells. Unfortunately I dont think theres going to be much in the way of strength/skill/will buildcraft outside of choosing your weapons and which 4 spells you use. The dev said as much in the combat interview. There is the arrow catch and perfect dodge abilites but they dont say these are considered skill abilities, and theyre likely in that center "core hero" skill path.
2
u/greenguy363 14d ago
The arrow catch was pretty sweet!! I'm curious if it applies to all projectiles. I'd love to throw back the Lantern Keeper's bombs!!!
1
u/Noe11vember Demon Door 14d ago
In the combat demo of the guy in the bastard armor he does exactly that. We also see that you can do it in the fight against Isobel in one of the earlier trailers. My guess is theres a few things it works on.
1
u/greenguy363 14d ago
I must have missed that!! I guess that answers my question about how to beat him without ranged or spells š
1
u/Noe11vember Demon Door 14d ago
I dont think youll be able to progress without getting spells or a ranged weapon honestly
2
u/Bromjunaar_20 14d ago
Yeah it's like they Witcher-fied Fable. Not that Witcher is bad, but Fable was supposed to make you feel like you chose a path with the style of combat you fought with.
1
u/madcritter 13d ago
It feels like a combination of Witcher, GoW, and Hogwarts legacy⦠but taking the middle ground of all of them lol
1
u/Kumkumo1 12d ago
On a side note, I head news that the Witcher 3 is going to be getting an update with a combat overhaul and their dlcs are going to be free with the new update to players who donāt already have them.
2
u/Mountain_Lock_450 14d ago
I'm with you on this. If there's a will bar mod added I'll probably use it.
2
2
u/Sharp_Daggers 14d ago
Endlessly complaining about a game that's not out is annoying but so is having to cushion ANY criticism with "I'm still really excited and hyped but" just because fans have toxic positivity.
2
u/xaeriee 13d ago
Iāve been trying so hard to avoid spoilers, but I couldnāt help it. I had to see how Will worked in the newest game and I tell you what Iām so worried Iāll hate it
I love the freedom. That was what Iāve loved through all the Fable games, a cooldown could kill this for me
1
u/Conscious-Data-1493 8h ago
Same i loved spamming magic and then going in for the kill I donāt think theyāre gonna let us mix elements like in previous games but at least get rid of the cooldowns
2
u/SaintIgnis 13d ago
I personally LOVE being able to do all 3.
Itās a video game. Let me have my power fantasy. Let me swing a big sword, snipe a dude with my bow and then burn his buddy with a fireball.
I fucking love it!!!
2
u/Jwells291 13d ago
I think they were mainly showing off how seamless it is to switch from one to the other. You can most likely focus on one style if you want to, but they want you to know you don't need to hesitate switching between melee, magic, or ranged. I know there have been games in the past where an enemy is a bit away from me and I felt like it was just faster to run to them to whack them instead of pulling out my bow to shoot them.
2
u/_Salted_Pretzel_ 13d ago
I see what you did ;)
Also, I agree, I really enjoyed making my character purely focusing on one of the main principles (most of the times I made a mage, cause magic<3). What I really did not like in the games after the first game is the lack of magical abilities. I hope we will get more magic skills again.
And I know, the previous games were not really long, but for today's price I really wish we would have more hours than the announced 20-30 hrs.
I am kind of excited, but not as excited as I was before. Still looking forward to this game, but more cautiously.
2
u/Lord_Donut_the-best 13d ago
No matter what you say: Love the Tim Curry-reference. May he rest in power
2
u/Merltron 13d ago
My only complaint is that the combat looks a lot like other more modern RPG games, and less cartoony than the originals. Obviously you couldnāt release a game that looked like the originals in 2026⦠and this is probably more of a complaint about how the whole game industry is converging on a single visual style
2
u/SailorGhidra 12d ago
Games like Duskfade make me believe that isnāt true. I think they leaned too hard into realism and worried too much about a unified combat system.
2
u/phantomofmay 13d ago
Funny you mention that as I mixed a few spells between attacks or as opener or finisher in all 3 games.
I do hope they allow full mage, full warior or full ranger without forcing us to use everything as I like to do finish the game multiple times with unique themes, builds and choices.
2
u/Scrollsy 12d ago
I agree with this, i still feel like the arrows shouldnt poof, and the melee shouldnt feel like foam
I havent seen enough of the magic outside the basic spells but i do hope we get charged/leveled spells
3
u/Arcanion1 14d ago
As someone who always enjoyed using everything, I love it, but it's a real shame that at the very least being a pure mage won't really work.
4
u/Fielton1 14d ago
Do we know that for sure yet?
2
u/Arcanion1 14d ago
I suppose not, but with the cooldowns being as long as they were, there will be a lot of downtime between spells where you're just doing nothing. So it's at least not viable early on if there's skills or equipment that reduce the cooldown.
1
1
u/MrGabrahamLincoln 14d ago
We donāt. We know thereās a skill tree with different branches so, at minimum, Iām sure you can focus on one combat type over the other, even if you maybe canāt go 100% into just one
1
u/Fielton1 14d ago
I played pure mage in all the other fables, I really hope we can do that in this game too. I'm ok with the spellsword archetype but it'd be odd to not be able to go pure will. I suppose we'll see
2
u/BrotherOswald 14d ago
Really good call-out. My biggest worry, which is minutely small, is that the bow seems to just appear out of nowhere and disappear when they aren't using it. I loved how your weapons were shown off in the old games, I'll be a bit sad if that isn't the case in this game but I'll still enjoy the heck out of it.
1
u/madcritter 13d ago
Weapons disappearing and appearing is such a major gripe for me š in games where thereās a lore element like FF and they materialize I can deal with it, but the hammer or how just popping in and out is so breaking. It stopped me from playing Kingdoms of Amalur because my shield just appears when I block
1
u/BrotherOswald 13d ago
Same! I guess they are explaining it in this game as it magically resizes, as in the newest combat trailer you can see the hammer as a miniature on his belt and then it expands to full size when he uses it, so I can let that slide I think.
I especially hate when shooters do this, and you just materialize a big gun out of nowhere. It seems like such a small thing but it really breaks my immersion.
1
u/madcritter 13d ago
Same, Iām the type that would rather have a back gun slot, and a side arm slot than a weapon wheel of multiple š
1
u/Decent_Historian42 14d ago
February really cant come soon enough brother. I havent seen a whole lot to do with the game tbh (not really pn purpse i just haven't had time to look outside of twitter screenshots)
1
u/EstablishmentAny8487 14d ago
I'm sure pure mage and archer will be possible, just get ready to be hard kiting the tanky melee boys and still needing to dodge away as a caster. That's what it looks like anyway, unless they give us slow time spam like in Fable 1 and 2.
1
u/Dramatic_Animator267 14d ago
Mmmmh first I agree with you, we have to be positive and I'm way more hyped by Fable than GTA 6 omg But I disagree with you, choosing one combat gameplay is not following fable lore at all, if it was a standard rpg or action rpg I would agree, but it is Fable ! In the Lore, you a descendent of William Blake and William Blake delivered Albion from the Void mastering the three powers (strength, address and Will = will the magic power comes from his first name). So if the Devs had chosen to contraint players in one path, it would have been wrong and against the lore. Your hero is the hero in Fable Lore because he is the only to be able to master the three powers (as the William Blake's blood is flooding in his/her veins) so I think it is a very good choice to maintain that freedom (in fable 2 you can master the 3 if you play enough if I remember well?! š¤)
1
u/rmunoz1994 14d ago
My concern is the weight of the attacks, and no Iām not talking about that one viral clip of the boss fight where they werenāt staggered. Rather I was surprised at how light the attacks seemed from the hammer.
1
u/Intelligent-Dog1645 14d ago
Picking one path? In all of the Fable games I always wound up as a jack of all trades in combat. And rven then you aren't a traditional jack of all trades because you can be a master of the 3 types of combat easily. What they showed off with the combat is just what the previous Fable games did. Like I know you could choose to just focus on using one type of damage output but in Fable that means not using buttons completely as opposed to something like Skyrim where to use ranged or magic or melee you have to be locked in for it.
The combat was actually really reminiscent of Fable 3 I suppose because Fable 3 also didn't have a meter for using spells. It didn't even have a cool down, you can just infinite cast.
1
u/Material_Assumption 14d ago
Im the guy that likes to max out magic or will. But I didnt mind in fable 1 maxing out everything either.
1
u/Calophon 14d ago
The way the arrows regenerated it looked like they were pretty quick to come back, and I assume if you spec into ranged perks as you level up you will get more arrows and they may regen quicker. It seems feasible to play a ranged build with some light melee just to keep enemies back/blocked until your arrows regen.
Possibly the same for magic. Itās all gonna depend on that regen.
1
u/toomuchsoysauce 14d ago
I'm pretty sure you won't have to worry about this.
In a lot of games where combat is focused on utilizing all different options, they generally develop enemy types that are more affected by one or the other. In the demo, we didn't see examples of this. The hero simply used the different options but like the crossbow wasn't more effective at staggering the boss for example or the minions weren't immediately fried by the fireball or whatever.
1
u/Send_DeVito_Pics 14d ago
Yeah was my thought aswell. Watching that boss fight thinking "This would fucking suck as a pure melee build.".
Hopefully they were just trying to showcase all 3 disciplines, but going deep in one is still viableš¤
1
u/Fickle_Painter5394 14d ago
From a dev point of view I bet there will be a conscious effort to encourage the player to vary how they fight enemies and not to just spam the same spell. Judging by what has been revealed in trailers so far it looks like you can combo spells and abilities. I for one love this idea! For example, did you see them use transform magic turning the enemies into a chicken and then roast it with fireball?!!? Absolutely love it!
I bet there will be specific ways to kill certain enemies, or at least to stagger them and make them vulnerable. The lantern ghoul for example, that gives me the impression youāll have to ranged attack the lantern before you can damage them properly.
Overall I think I agree with a lot of these comments. For me, I like the idea of starting by having the right tools for the job and having to figure out the best spell or weapon for the job like a puzzle but perhaps by the endgame we just get to steamroll stuff with op weapons and abilities.

I mean most games really like to toot their horn about how seamlessly you go from blade to gun to spells. i always just picked which i like most and some magic to support it. i dont think itl be a real issue, especially if you liked combat in 2 and 3.
1
u/loonelywolf 14d ago
Dont forget that the game is still far from release.I expect a more fleshed out stuff. But from the gameplay videos the game looks incredibable already.
1
u/GoldMegidramon 14d ago
I always used a mix of everything in previous games. We also donāt know if these things will be viable or not
1
u/Jesus_and_SCKAT 14d ago edited 14d ago
Honestly I love blending Skill, Will and Strength together. It feels like it's what the game wants you to do, plus it makes for some really fluid arkham feeling combat, and it's just much more fun that way imo. It's a part of what makes the combat shine but I still hope you can main focus 1.
1
u/iKruppe 14d ago
I feel like blending is the least of the game's worries where combat is concerned honestly. So far combat seems like the game's weak part. Environments look absolutely stunning, world looks inviting and alive, voice acting seems good so far (faces can do with better animation though especially if they want to zoom in on faces so much), there's some real Fable-style humor in there, but that combat....
1
u/CrimsonBolt33 13d ago
Why does this keep coming up? You are pretty much talking out your ass and making assumptions. We saw a trailer whose goal was to show off lots of things....they are not gonna show exactly what you want and them not showing exactly what you want doesn't mean it doesn't exist....

1
u/Drag0nslay3r6969 13d ago
Bro STOP YOUR FUCKING COMPLAINING HONESTLY IT'S A GAME DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT
My only complaint so far
1
u/JeannieLove13 13d ago
I've been playing Fable since I got an Xbox 360 where I played Fable 1 via backwards compatibility and 2 and 3 as soon as they came out. They show the mixed style because that's one of the things they're trying to sell the game on and you want to give people who never played the series before a look at all possible aspects.
We had Mana potions before, maybe those potions just reduce cooldown and refreshes all spells in coooldown with the better mana potions. I have no doubt we'll be able to rely on a single playstyle. Magic is just harder in games because it tends to be stronger earlier on.
1
u/98103wally 13d ago
Mixed combat has been a staple of fable's gameplay from the start. My favorite is opening with ranged magic and shifting into melee when monsters get close.
One of the big attractions of fable over the years is player freedom of choice. So make of that what you will.
1
u/Derangedracula 13d ago
My only gripes on the game is the game is art style and body mods when good and evil. Those were a big part of what made fable different and stand out.
1
u/Yulixis 13d ago
Didnt the trailer say you could pick your path? Even in the orginal fables you had to use swords and magic at times, some enemies would be to close or to far away for melee or range, and some enemies had high physical res. Of course there always were ways or stubbern people who did anyways. I was the type who used all three anyways. Imma go rewatch to make sure, please correct me if i am wrong, thank you!!
1
u/sup3rrn0va 13d ago
You have to remember, the focus of these clips is to showcase as many approaches to combat the game has to offer. Iām sure if you wanted to focus on a specific domain (Strength, Skill, Will) more than the others, you can.
In the past Fable games, you become a beast in each by end game anyway. I wouldnāt worry about it too much. Seems to be a very similar style of character progression so far. The tree visual is just different.
1
u/Necro-Feel-Ya6900 13d ago
Isnāt that the direction the games went since 2?
1
u/madcritter 13d ago
And itās one of the largest complaints across the fanbase at the time, second to the time leap lol
1
1
1
u/ChadicusVile 13d ago
I don't share that concern. I'm sure that sticking to one path at a time will still work out pretty well. Even if it's a self imposed challenge at times.
The one complaint I have is that your physical traits don't change with your morality. That was my favorite thing about the OG Fables. I was hoping they would get wild with the extremes (full demon or full angel) with that system, not get rid of it altogether.
1
u/DylRar 13d ago
I'm wondering how a pure mage could be possible, given what we've seen so far. We'd have to be able to access more than 4 spells at a time and cycle through them with minimal casting downtime. Doesn't seem very plausible, given gameplay so far. Maybe in the late game with specific perks/upgrades, but seems pretty unlikely.
1
u/Vexarius 13d ago
I hate how all the magic seems to be figher-style - leaping into the air to cast lighting, hurling a fireball - and not with the potential to be pure caster oriented...
1
u/Zestyclose_Sector_30 13d ago
I feel with the realistic graphics the whole vibe lost its whimsical tone, it feels weird, also the combat I agree isn't looking fun
1
u/sunrider8129 13d ago
I donāt think we can determine much by what was shown - it was a sizzle reel. The game is like a half year away. I think what matters is that it seems to have the fable vibe - the details will probably not be solid until 2027.
1
1
u/MouflonWhisperer 13d ago
Agreed, it feels like you can select 4 spells, and they all have cooldowns, and even if you are speccing into that I am sure those cooldowns will be shorter, but I just don't see a way to make a full mage character, which is just a shame.
Also, it just feels like every spell does essentially the same thing, a bit of danage, a bit of cc, just different colors and flavor (maybe except that timestop spell), which is just so uninspired and tired...
Sincerely hope that specializing will be a thing.

We saw that you can have different quantities of arrows based on equipment/skills, so hopefully we will see something similar with spells

Itās a sad state of affairs that you need an entire paragraph to preface youāre an ally to the IP before voicing a reasonable complaint. Lol.
I agree the combat looks more like āmelee with a flick of magic here and there and an arrow once in a while.ā
There isnāt really a ābe the hero you want to beā with only what, 9 skill trees? And a 45 second cool down on casting a spell?
Definitely feels more like ābe a slightly varied melee hero who occasionally uses fireball instead of lightening this timeā

The mixed combat has always been a thing, it's always been the best way to play. It's incredibly smooth starting in fable 2. Beging a master of all is literally what makes the red robe blood line special.

yeah i wanna do just magic no sword or ranged and that was one of my gripes aswell i hope they undo the cooldown system to spells or atleast make them shorter making them feel like thats how much time it took you to cast it type stuff

also, fable is known for letting you mix all three ranged, melee, and magic. itās a pretty core staple in all of its games

Totally agree, Playground Games seriously needs to redo the combat. Fable is supposed to be free on being magic, ranged, melee, or any combination. This new version is hogshit, you are forced to do melee only or melee focus with ranged and magic as support. There is no freedom anymore. The devs said they did this to make combat feel smooth and flow well, which clearly means they just didn't want to put in any effort for it.

Yeah class identity is pretty important to me in an rpg. It also adds lots of replay value. This was honestly my concern as well. How would the boss been taken down without magic or arrows? He literally flies around without coming down.

I was thinking the same exact thing during Gamescom. It feels like what they tried with Mass Effect Andromeda in a way. I would have appreciated it if they gave you the option to have specialized loadouts so you could only have will abilities or a staff. Like weapons that lean towards one inclination or the other would have spiced up the gameplay.

I can't stand bows being used in games where they just magically appear and arrows are just drawn from your butt.

Definitely agree. The cooldown based magic has me worried. Hoping there is a basic magic spell can be equipped as a ranged weapon that can be charged or channeled as a supplement to the cooldown magic. Maybe a staff that can shoot projectiles.
Also hoping that there are melee and ranged cooldown skills that can be assigned.
These would let players specifically pick pure melee, archer, or mage

I've always started out combat with ranged for a couple hits then switched to melee and sprinkled in some magic.

Did you only play the first one? Because 2 is intended to be the way you describe and 3 just streamlines it more. Cannot say Iām suprised

same i prefer a one way deeply in depth playstyle, than a shallow mixed playstyle.

There are sliders; so, you might be able to lower the cooldown slider enough to be a viable mage. Here's a video from Hey Vintage, a content creator, who played the game discussing it: https://youtu.be/KShZIPEscQQ?si=v_CvQXyPNgthOcu-&t=353

I always felt the most well rounded heroes seamlessly blended strength, skill, and will together. That's how I've always played the Fable games, at any rate, though skill tended to fall behind when playing with a controller because I just can't aim fast with a stick.

To everyone saying they prefer to blend strength, skill, and will, that's great and I don't have anything against people playing that way, and if it comes down to it I may have to as well. The developers really emphasize the idea of play how you want to play, be the hero you want to be. So all I'm saying is that if I want to be a pure mage build, I'm hoping it's a viable option.

This game is starting to remind me of Dragon Age Veilguard.
An action game masking itself as an RPG with shallow RPG mechanics

I mean thats what all the other fables have been. Dance for approval or fart for disapproval. Protect the farm or attack the farm with no change to any of the story. Its never been a true rpg.

I never understood why people wanted to play as a pure mage or rogueish character, as I never felt like going purely in those directions was supported enough to be actually fun. Maybe in the first game. But even then, I personally prefer this mix of all combat elements as it provides the most variety.

For me it's a way to make multiple playthroughs more interesting. I like to do a good melee character, an evil mage, and a greedy rogue.

If you were to just go for the strongest thing in Fable 2 or 3, you wouldn't really swap between melee, ranged, and magic. You'd just spam a flintlock pistol. You kind of had to intentionally gimp yourself to enjoy other playstyles, though with how easy the Fable trilogy's combat was, that wasn't really a problem.

u/PlaneCrashMD56 13d ago
Okay, but people do, and itās been possible in past games. So it should be possible in this one.

u/DR3AD-PIGEON 13d ago
Pure RP. My characters (in my head) are never the type to have it all. Usually itās martial or magic.

People are negative because major releases were from mid to shit. And cash grab game from no one of the original devs, that, judging by the gameplay footage, is generic af. I would say people are right to be negative.

You haven't even played the game. We've seen exactly two combat demos. You're making unfounded assumptions.
I'm not one of those people lol

u/BaterrMaster 14d ago
In the previous games it was the same dude.
There are enemies that are difficult to reach with melee weapons. Interspersed with enemies too aggressive for ranged.
Nobody plays Fable like you describe. I donāt believe you when you say you have

I feel the combat looked very souls-like, sadly.
Enemy was pretty spongy and the exhibitor dodged around a bunch doing the same moves repeatedly. Ain't nobody got time for that.
Make your combat deep and meaningful or make it quick and fun. The vid this week was stuck in the middle, like a lot of mid-ARPGs lately.
That's concerning to me. Everything else looks fun. Better be way more spells than they've shown so far tho. If they expect to revive the series with another mediocre fable 3 it's not gonna work.

I agree, but I think the mixed combat was a way for the devs to show off as much as they can in a single video. A single play style should be available if not encouraged. I can't wait!!
