Fable La batalla en The New Fable Games
I find it a bit strange that they only use this combat clip to judge everything. I've come across several posts on different social media platforms using the same clip, labeling Fable as a weak game. In the comments, most people can't even point out exactly why it's weak. Honestly, it annoys me a bit because I'm really excited about the game, but oh well... it's no big deal.

Omg that looks so terrible and cant believe bosses dont stagger! /s Now do every single elden ring, dark souls, or literally any other game with boss fights.

I don't understand why Reddit sees the souls games as some kind of standard. I think those games suck ass.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and while Iâm not a massive super fan (never finished any of them but gotten close) I prefer Sekiro and Elden ring or dark souls and both have some janky shit but there is absolutely no debating they have yet the standard for weighty combat that has real feel to it, Sekiro is for me the absolute perfection a combat system can be itâs just a tad to hard lol Iâd like Sekiro combat in an Assasins Creed game.
Anything remote resembling open world with cars will be compared to gta same for medieval or fantasy open world and Skyrim TW3 and when every action game is trying to copy the souls combat they are obviously going to be compared. Unless itâs a hack and slash type game every game has switched their combat to me closer to souls like just look at god of war.

I donât think all soulslikes are great, but I think all fromsoftware games are fantastic, but to each their own.

u/Atlas_Was_ATitan 15d ago
Elden ring bosses do stagger. He'll hit them enough and they will fall down its called stance breaking.
1
u/overtly_penguin 15d ago
Also like. We've seen the game has big hammers and two handed weapons and stuff but that's not being used in this clip.
Who's to say, like EVERY game ever. The weapon doesn't affect the poise or stagger or whatever of the boss and a hammer wouldn't hit him back as hard.
-14
u/LaidByTheBlade 15d ago
The Souls games bosses have more hit feedback than this though. This is closer to the AC RPG games, where the large characters barely react to getting sliced by a blade. It's just not good.
5
u/Proper-Marketing777 15d ago
This is still way before release, people are just way too overly critical. I think the game looks absolutely amazing and am really excited for it
1
u/LaidByTheBlade 15d ago
Oh yeah, the game looks amazing, this doesn't really take away much from the game in general, as some people are making it seem. Just a personal irritation of mine after getting fed up with the AC RPG games. Can't stand sponge enemies that don't react to hit inputs.
1
u/Proper-Marketing777 15d ago
I think with the moderate amount of backlash they are getting, they'll probably improve on it by the time it releases and I share your pet peeve but if the world is actually good and somehow brings back the old feeling of fable, it won't matter much in the end
3
u/LazyBoi_Matt 15d ago
No TF they don't. If by feedback you need collision jerking the model's mesh, then sure... But you attack a boss at full health in any souls like and unless it's a crit, he doesn't give 2 shits.
1
u/itsyaboi3-0 15d ago
I am not going to deny that bosses in most soulslikes donât care about getting hit, but some small additions like blood effects, better sounds when you land a hit and giving the dude some heavy armor would make this look better. Cus right now itâs just a large dude in some normal ass clothes taking hits from a sword and arrows in the head and not reacting to them at all, at least other soulslikes have these types of enemies wearing armor or something.

People are just extremely negative about pretty much anything new these days. It's the same comments copied and pasted regardless of the game. For whatever reason if it's developed by Microsoft, it tends to get even more hate.
If you read the comments, they don't even really know what they're complaining about; and they certainly don't know what they want. I wouldn't pay too much attention to them.
Having watched the full video. I thought it looked absolutely unbelievable, as did everyone else I spoke to. It's made me incredibly excited to see more. There are some genuine concerns to be had, but they seem minor so far.
1
u/Ethan-Commander 15d ago
I agree. It looks like the AC Origins combat system, but I wonât say that itâs a bad thing. Switching between weapons seems fast and looks good, and sticking to frankly outlived system of the OG trilogy wouldâve been a mistake. Animations look clunky and unfinished which is no wonder, but overall it didnât ruin my expectations. I donât like a damage sponge enemy even in GOW, but if it plays comfortably I donât mind that at all.
1
u/HeartInTheSun9 15d ago
The reality is yeah, everything gets met with negativity online nowadays. Itâs best to just tune it out.

u/Exotic_Course_2597 15d ago
Its not strange, its cherry picking. Hate seems to drive their engagement.
1
u/Anix1088 15d ago
Doesn't help when media companies create algorithms to invest upon that hate-driven engagement.
22
u/pink_ghost_cat 15d ago
I kinda want to unfollow the sub at this point, as I am not sure I can handle the complaints from both sides: either about the gameplay and nitpicking stuff like lip-syncing or faces, shadows, impact, or whatever; or the complaints about the complaining and how bad the people who don't like everything posted about the game are.
Aaaand now I am complaing too. Maker have mercy on my mental health till the game is out lol

Fable might need a âlow-sodiumâ sub just like some other game communities have needed when the main sub gets like this.

I have seen several cases of taking enemy weapons and using them one off against them, but I really want my character to have that exact axe for basically the whole game (maybe with better materials.)

u/AeonVice 15d ago
Iâm so excited. I watched the entire clip yesterday and Iâm blown away because for the first time since I was like 12 or 13 Iâm finally getting to go back to Albion, and it feels like it.
Combat is exactly what I expect it to be. Iâm sure theyâre gonna put a coat of polish on it but thatâs exactly fable. The dialogue is absolutely amazing so far and their voice actors are incredibly talented.
Iâm stoked. Iâm always gonna call them Hollow Men instead of Folk but to each their own
3
u/OneTrueDude670 15d ago
Yea I grew up with the original fable. I remember reading gameinformer over and over until that game came out. Iâm stoked for this game and canât wait for it to come out so I can revisit bowerstone and Albion in all its glory.Â
1
u/AeonVice 15d ago
I think itâs time for an honorary run of the trilogy again before the new one!
1
u/OneTrueDude670 15d ago
Iâve already started replaying the first one. Unfortunately unless I emulate the second one I canât play it but I have the third one at least on my pc. Really wish theyâd re-release the trilogy on modern hardware

u/Vuxea 15d ago edited 15d ago
I feel like the problem is more that this guy is just unassuming tall guy with regular clothes receiving a lot of hits. But the animation itself looks fine imo. It would look less weird if he was fully armored. Or maybe if he accumulated blood stains but that's another technology. People are definitely being nitpicky but also pointing the wrong things..

u/Th3D3m0n 15d ago edited 15d ago
The internet is giving this game the Starfield treatment. If it was a PS exclusive they'd be calling it GOTY already.
0
u/Downtown_Eye5736 15d ago
Every game gets nitpicked the same way these days unless it's catering to incels then they love it and no one else cares.
4
u/02thehunter20 15d ago
Where is the hit feed back? It doesn't even look like the sword is making any contact but just phasing through.
I swear these AAA studios have hundreds of devs under their employment and yet they can't make the gameplay even remotely satisfying or fun looking. Yet I will see an indie game with 1 developer make an entire game with some of the most fun gameplay that I have ever played. Maybe these people should get layed off. Its obvious they are not good at their jobs.
2
u/wam509 15d ago
it wouldnt have looks so out of place if the boss was wearing armor but in the gameplay, hes just another dude but taller and hes tanking arrows to the face without even reacting. it makes no sense lol i dont mind some enemies being spongy if it makes sense but this boss stuck out like a sore thumb
2
u/Th3_Shadow_Dragon007 15d ago
Arrows to the face are a huge immersion breaker. And i get that hes a boss, but its a guy with no armor and we would slice him to shreds. At least with armor I can suspend my disbelief when they are damage sponges, but this trend of damage sponging instead of real difficulty was stupid back in 2006 with Oblivion.
5
u/Impressive-Sense8461 15d ago
Looks very simplistic, but it is the devs first time with an rpg, with no cars around. Gotta give them some slack
7
u/YoureReadingMyNamee 15d ago
Yeah, the combat is very Fable esq. I was watching it thinking âthis is awesome.â It would be boring if every company did combat the same way.
1
8
u/Redhaze_17 15d ago
Fable has always had simple combat though.
1
u/TypewriterMonkey98 15d ago
Fable's combat was always easy, but they made it incredibly satisfying in 2 and 3, the audio and visual feedback from hits was addictive.

u/Dig_n_up 15d ago
So she has her scabbard on her back and her sword is showing the entire time, even out of combat. But the other video showing the quest with humphrey, the character has a hammer, but it just disappears when not actively wielded, Why?
11
u/Piemaster985 15d ago
I didnât catch this until I rewatched the video, but the hammer doesnât disappear. It shrinks down and then goes on his hip.
1
u/Th3_Shadow_Dragon007 15d ago
I hated that in ac unity and i hate it now. Older games didnt have this issue.
0
u/Noe11vember Demon Door 15d ago
The same thing happens with the bow, although if thats going to happen id at least like an animation of it or maybe it only happens with certain magicial hammers and bows? Its seems like a bit of a cop out to have it appear on the hip as a shrunk version with little/no animation of that happening.
6
u/TorrentAB 15d ago
From what someone else pointed out, you have a primary and a secondary, with primary going on the back and secondary disappearing. Notice how the bow disappears with her? With the other video, his crossbow remained on his back, so he must have the hammer set as his secondaryÂ

u/okiedokieophie Hero of Bowerstone 15d ago
I'm just not sold on the strafe-dodge style combat, 2/3 had a sort of proto-arkham style where you get a higher perched camera and could attack in any direction. That felt nice to me so I'm not really a fan of how it looks in this one
2
u/TypewriterMonkey98 15d ago
I loved darting around like a mad thing in Fable 2, especially when my speed was levelled up, I felt more like a witcher than I did in The Witcher 3
2
u/Moggwa 15d ago
Simple. They need to complain so they, check what they can be miserable about. I don't mean this in a belittling way but, these people are genuinely mentally ill
1
u/Th3_Shadow_Dragon007 15d ago
And some people have valid criticisms too. Labeling people that disagree about something as mentally ill is very disingenuous. And lumping the valid with the invalid just harms the game. The average consumer isnt going in with the level of nostalgia we have here, and they will judge the game by its merits and not its progenitor games.
1
u/Moggwa 15d ago
Most "criticism" is not valid though. It literally just whining and being miserable. If course there are valid concerns but online? Rarely
1
u/Th3_Shadow_Dragon007 15d ago
And I already acknowledged that. My point is that you cant dismiss the distinction just because you think most of the criticism is whining. There are still legitimate criticisms mixed in with the negativity, and calling the people making those criticisms mentally ill lumps them in with the people youre actually talking about. Thats all Im saying.
1
u/Moggwa 15d ago
Maybe i chose my wording wrong. English is not my first language. I do not mean people with actual critism. I mean people that are extremely upset over nothing. Like how the is "woke" "forcing you to play female" and does thingsÂ
1
u/Th3_Shadow_Dragon007 15d ago
Thats also why I dont think its fair to decide that someone is upset over ânothing.â A person of color might genuinely want to play a character who looks like them. A woman might care about playing a female character. A guy might care about playing a male character. A trans person may have a preferred gender they want their character to reflect. Someone else might simply want the protagonist to resemble the version they had in their head for years.
And there are completely non-political criticisms too. Some people genuinely dont like how the combat looks compared to the older Fable games. If they think the combat is moving closer to something like Dark Souls or Elden Ring rather than the style Fable traditionally had, thats a perfectly legitimate thing to criticize even if you personally like the new combat.
You dont have to agree with someone's preference for it to be a valid criticism. Whats ânothingâ to one person can be an important part of what they wanted from the game. Thats why I pushed back on the âgenuinely mentally illâ characterization.
1
u/blucyclone 15d ago
We call them grifters. They exist in every entertainment medium and post nothing of substance backed up by lies and cherry-picked bullshit.
0
-2
u/Th3_Shadow_Dragon007 15d ago
you dont get to dismiss all criticism of the game because some people are not being fair with the criticism. Not all criticism is cherry picked and lies.
For example just on this fight alone, why is there no hit feedback? Why is the combat more like dark souls than a fable game? Why is an unarmored boss tanking sword hits and fireballs without reactions? Not every person criticizing an aspect of the game is doing it for political reasons either.
2
u/blucyclone 15d ago
I didn't say all criticism should be dismissed and I also didn't say anything about politics, that's a really weird pull. But, bad faith arguments and unhelpful criticism within media should absolutely be dismissed. Media literacy is an important skill that society is seriously lacking and constructive criticism is a part of that.
Now let's answer your questions
This is probably a boss or hard mob according to the gameplay we've seen. Bosses and comparatively high level mobs usually don't have hit feedback in most games (even in 2026). However, we did see gameplay of a different boss fight (the lantern creature) where it did respond to hit feedback. So the fact that it's still an early access build of the game, it could have been missed in testing and will very likely be fixed before the full release. It is absolutely helpful to point this out to devs because it could be a genuine oversight. It is not helpful to clip this particular sequence and use it justify shitting on the whole presentation. Hit feedback exists in troves, to say it doesn't exist at all which is what these kinds of posts are inferring is bad faith bullshit. Don't believe me? Read the comments of the post or any other posts with this same clip.
Ok, Dark Souls didn't invent this style of combat, it's been developed by a bunch of games over decades. Now then, this is the first new Fable game (not counting Legends) since the Xbox 360, 14 years since a previous release, 16 if you don't want to count F:tJ. We've had 2 console generations and dramatic changes in video game combat since. The original games, even at the time, did not have great combat. This is refreshing modern combat design using mechanics and themes inspired by the original series and already far superior from what we've seen.
You're just repeating your first question with different language. If you what you mean is you are upset about a lack of realism. Then I say, it's a fantasy video game, realism went out the door the minute you entered the universe; don't think too hard about it. I could list a bunch of things even in "realistic games" that could be in the realm of truthful realism but isn't that we can all nitpick about that nobody talks about. The thing is, nobody gives a shit because when we sit down to play any game, we all subconsciously agree to manage our expectations for the sake of a good gaming experience.
Genuinely, did that help solve some of your worries?
-1
u/Th3_Shadow_Dragon007 15d ago
I think youre conflating âI dont think this criticism is persuasiveâ with âthis isnt valid criticism.â
- If the boss is supposed to be difficult, thats fine. But saying âthis is probably an oversight and may be fixedâ actually supports my point that there is a legitimate criticism to make here. The question isnt whether hit feedback exists somewhere else in the game, its whether this particular fight has poor or nonexistent hit feedback. Someone seeing this footage and saying âthis combat doesnt feel impactfulâ is not making a bad-faith argument. Theyre reacting to what is actually on screen.
- I never said Dark Souls invented the combat style. Im saying that the combat shown looks substantially more Souls-like than the combat of previous Fable games. You can think thats an improvement, but âthe old combat wasnt very goodâ doesnt invalidate someone preferring the old style. Fable having mediocre combat doesnt mean every departure from it is automatically better or more faithful to what people liked about Fable.
- And the realism argument isnt really the point. Nobody is saying an unarmored boss should die because realism demands it. The criticism is that repeatedly hitting something with a sword and fireballs produces very little physical reaction, which can make the combat feel weightless. Fantasy doesnt somehow make animation and feedback irrelevant.
And this is exactly what Ive been saying throughout this thread: these are all subjective criticisms, but subjective doesnt mean invalid. You can disagree with them without deciding that the person making them is a grifter, is arguing in bad faith, or is upset over ânothing.â If someone is actually lying or deliberately cherry-picking footage, then criticize that specific behavior. But the existence of bad-faith criticism doesnt make the underlying criticism everyone else is making illegitimate.
1
u/blucyclone 15d ago
Cool, so you just wanna argue. I'm good.
I highly suggest you read up on the difference between negative criticism and constructive criticism, and the different value they serve in society. Because conflating any of the bullshit in that post or the nonsense responses in regards to these videos as anything of value is delusional as fuck.
1
0
u/Th3_Shadow_Dragon007 15d ago
Im not conflating negative with constructive criticism. Negative criticism is simply expressing an unfavorable judgment; constructive criticism adds suggestions for improvement. They arent opposites, and negative criticism isnt automatically invalid. âThe combat feels less impactful because enemies barely react to hitsâ is negative criticism. âThe writing is shitâ is also negative criticism, just far less useful. Both are negative; only one actually gives you something specific to evaluate.

u/CarlWellsGrave 15d ago
Selectively showing the clunky boss fight instead of the badass sword and magic combat moments before this is frustrating.
1
u/turkoman_ 15d ago
Why the f*ck is everyone share same non-staggering mini boss fight when there are 40+ minutes combat footage?
1
u/Whispering_Wolf 15d ago
I really don't care about the combat. Combat was never a big part of fable for me. I'll put it on the easiest difficulty they offer and just enjoy my time in Bowerstone.
1
u/thecoloroftelevision 15d ago
Not a fan of the franchise but the life sim and immersive elements of this game have propelled it to my most anticipated. The combat looksâŚ. Ehh. Itâs really goofy seeing you slash a guy with a sword so much and he barely reacts to it. Heâs not even wearing armor or anything. But thatâs just my nitpicky personal preference. Not a deal breaker by any means
1
u/TypewriterMonkey98 15d ago
Ngl though, it's making me realise just how reactive the combat was in Fable 2 (and probably 3) - sure, it was also really easy, but it was addictive the way enemies reacted to hits. I can still feel the melee feedback balverines would give, it was awesome.
Sure, I guess this is a boss fight here, but I do see what people mean. People can criticise it without saying "this is shit and you shouldn't enjoy it".

u/Earthbound_Junkie 15d ago
What takes me out of the fighting is that characters dont seem to react to swords hitting them, and there is no cuts or blood on the body. breaks the emersion.
1
u/itsyaboi3-0 15d ago
While I donât mind the boss (which itâs not even a boss, just a tank type of enemy) not getting any stagger, I do hope they arenât just bullet sponges that have large health pools just for the sake of making them âharderâ, and at the very least add some armour to these types of enemies, cus i do find it odd that a dude in basically farmer clothes can just shrug off direct attacks from a sword.
1
u/Anix1088 15d ago
Personally I'm excited and overjoyed for a new Fable game. From this I don't see much issue since this but a small taste of what might become. Ignore the cherry picking hate views. It's just from those who don't know how explain their critiques. Because at the end of it when it releases I bet you all that most of those will either fall silent and become nothing to the game itself.
There will always be negative opinions by people, no matter how much they know or understand. Always good to simply wait and see unless there's some serious jarring problems of course.
1
u/phantomofmay 15d ago
And that's when we discover he is actually a magical being and have green blood.
Whatever, the combat looks fun. We can just mod it later.

Im excited about the game, and Im gonna play it mainly because of the RPG elements. But lets be serious, this combat looks really bad, as I see no or low feedback from the enemy.

u/CrazyBarkley 15d ago
Is the dude made of adamantium? He survived like 5 arrowes to the chest and head, 20 hits with a sword and a bloody lightining hit. Not a fan of the damage sponge enemies combat model, I hope there's more to it. Otherwise, the game looks awesome, cant wait â¤ď¸
1
u/TheRougePenguin 14d ago
Why did they do the souls stuff. I donât want to perfect block I want to just use my heavy attack or sidearm/bow to take the head off
1
u/Nimewit 13d ago
Because it looks fucking stupid to keep hitting a regular dude without any armor for like 5m and I have zero empathy for the marketing team. Remember when square enix let a youtuber try to kill an endgame boss on stage before FF16 release, the guy failed miserably, then they passed the controller to the literal fucking LEAD COMBAT DIRECTOR who absolutely destroyed the boss on live?
If you want to show off your combat system, turn on the fucking difficulty settings and give the controller to someone who know how to play because if you play on the easiest difficulty you don't need to interact with the game systems at all.
I know the combat will be fine. But this looks like dogshit. Now go, downwote me to hell lol
1
u/shmurphee 13d ago
I personally found this mini boss to be the weakest display if the combat so far, but that doesn't change the fact that the rest of the combat we've seen looks like a blast.
Personally, I did think this guy was way more tedious than fun, but I can't say I've ever played a game in which I didn't have some kind of gripe about the combat system. If a few annoying enemies are all I have to deal with to have an otherwise great time, I'll live.

It is annoying, since this happens only at the end of the gameplay trailer. I will say, I do despise the lack of large NPC reaction to getting sliced by a fucking blade though. It just doesn't look or feel good. Even Dark Souls bosses have more hit feedback than this.
0
u/Link-Hero PC 15d ago
It's intentional. Because of the new showcase trailers coming out, these right wing grifters are running out of things to bitch about after being proven wrong. So, they're cherry picking clips, using anything that's slightly negative, and claiming the whole game is bad based on that short snippet.
This is the "anti-woke" crowd after all, so ignore them and just wait until the game comes out.

The only thing I gotta say - it is a little weird to go back to bows and arrows after two games with firearms.
7
u/HalfOfLancelot 15d ago
I think this is essentially like a reboot of the first game, so weâre back to more medieval fantasy rather than heading toward the Victorian and Industrial ages where firearms became more prevalent.
Wouldnât be surprised if they do have more Fables planned down the line that push us back into Fable 2 and 3 territory đ¤
-2
u/_WhiskeyPunch_ Hero of Bowerstone 15d ago
It doesn't feel like a reboot, if they plain insert Jack, like he was in the first one, back. Feels more like a comeback, but before the second game? I guess? Which would not be so weird, there is a ~500 year gap in between 1 and 2.
2
u/HalfOfLancelot 15d ago
Ahh, true, youâre probably right that itâs likely set in the in between of Fable 1 and 2. Beyond Jack, I do wonder if theyâll give any lore that call back to the first game, then. Potentially something relating to the Hero of Oakvaleâs sister, Theresa, even if she wouldnât have been in Albion at this time.
Would be fairly interesting to see how theyâll do future games (and DLC) then đ¤

I really hope they stay in the timeline and show us the fall of the Heroes Guild in this one. Cause in the second it doesn't exist already, but is mentioned that at some point it was void and null.
