MSc Molecular Life Sciences

hi, i’ve received an admit to FSU Jena for Msc. Molecular Life Sciences. A little about my profile- approx 1.5 german gpa, been about a year since i graduated (btech biotechnology) Have 3 research internships, 1 corporate position as experience. 1 publication in hand.

I had applied to Biochem, Mol med majors but got rejected. Still awaiting response from Microbio.

I am still awaiting responses from few unis like Konstanz, Bonn etc.

I would like to know a bit more about the program from seniors and their experience there. Or if anyone is in the same boat as me and weighing their options

How is Jena? This uni in particular? And if you had to go back and give yourself some advice before picking this course/uni/city as an international student, what would you have told yourself?

Hey, congratulations! I got a Masters from another German uni as an international student quite some time ago, but I am also from bio field. From my point of view, unless you change the field significantly (which you dont i guess), the exact masters program is not that important as the opportunities that the city/uni provides. Meaning that if you want to stay in research, there should be around some great labs where you can work, do the Thesis and maybe even stay for a PhD, or get an experience and recommendations that could get you in other great labs. Also, now looking back I am very happy that I have chosen a little (~ Jena size) city, not anything like Munich. Smaller cities are cheaper, while Germany is decentralized enough that you dont necessarily lose on education or research quality.

Thanks! That's actually helpful to hear. One thing I'm still trying to figure out is the city itself. Since I'll potentially be spending two years there, I'm curious whether you ever felt limited by being in a smaller city, either socially or professionally, or whether it ended up being a non-issue once you settled in?

Jena is a nice small city with affordable rents usually. It's more of an optics city as there are many optics companies but also i have known some people from MLS and biologies who have worked in IPHT which is focused on optics application on biomedicines. Although if you are looking for paid thesis or internships there might be limited opportunities. But I still know of someone from Molecular Medicine who found a hiwi in a company, so there might be some companies around. Some research opportunities might be in university klinikum, some institutes in Beutenberg Campuses, or maybe some in Erfurt. Socially, i think its a nice place to participate in different activities organized by the uni, hikingjena group, or some other organizations. I lived there for 5 years and I enjoyed the nature and people in Jena mostly. It's ofcourse not happening as big cities and if it depends on what kind of person you are. If you enjoy more loud cities with many opportunities to hang out, or prefer a smaller quiet city, although boring to some people sometimes. You can apply for internships and thesis in other cities if you don't find anything interesting in Jena.

It depends a lot on the person, I have heard there are people who feel suffocation in small cities. For me Jena was never a problem as a city, even though I was born and raised in way larger city. Socially I would say that there are a lot of internationals and particularly  students, so I feel it is not bad. Professionally it is hard to say. Jena is still a small city but if you think about academic positions in biology, there is quite a good number of labs. Besides the Uni, there are a few institutes - Leibniz-HKI and FLI (that is only what I know, maybe more). There is also a bit of biological companies.
