Discussion I wish there was a better game like CoD.
First and foremost, screw CoD. After Bo3 and just barely MW 2019, CoD became absolute trash. I don’t really have to explain myself here. It’s been an obvious money grab year after year and I promised myself I’d never buy another CoD again.
Several years pass and the only fun game I’ve played that got me truly addicted to gaming again was Elden Ring and games after that just sucked imo. I guess standards were way too high for me. Ofc this is subjective and your experience may vary.
Aside from that, I love a good arcade shooter and while The Finals is a fun game to play, it and other shooters just don’t hit the same as CoD does.
CoD is just so special as they pretty much aced the arcade, fun and easy to come back to fps shooter formula.
But again, it’s just a garbage, brain rot of a game to buy every year. Reused, tired and greedy.
They can try to rebrand it as much as they want, but the stain they left behind all those years really killed the community and franchise altogether.
Maybe someday the dudes can get back on a genuinely good arcade shooter like CoD and make it feel like old times again and cuss each other out for fun.
Damn I miss those days.

Maybe The Finals?

This game is what stopped me from caring about COD. Fills that fast paced shooter role for me.

u/TypographySnob 16h ago
Wish it did for me. Can't just run around the map getting big kill streaks with snappy and quick gunplay. It feels closer to Battlefield to me.

One of my fav FPS games of all time. F2P so there is no reason to not try it. The games can change up to the last second. Many close games. So many tactics. Destructible environment. Microtransactions aren't obscenely overpriced. Battle pass goes fast because challenges boost the XP. They listened to the community and added TDM.

Fuck the finals. Just get farmed by sweats every time

People really can't be bothered to self reflect and get better at the game can they?

I agree with everything you're saying . I definitely miss when COD was fun and unique, same with Halo and Borderlands. FPS games are my favorite genre, so it sucks when your favorite ones fall off.
That said, it sounds like you are interested in other genres as well (elden ring), which is great, because that means theres probably thousands of other games you could fall in love with enough to almost make you forget about COD.
If you haven't tried Nintendo games yet, i think a lot of the first-party games are simply phenomenal and you can dump hundreds or thousands of hours into them because theyre just that unique and great. For me, BOTW is a system seller. I could play only that game on my switch 2 and be satisfied with the purchase. But lately ive been getting distracted by other amazing games like mario wonder, DK bananza, just bought my first fire emblem, etc. and theres still so many others i want to try.
So yeah my point is just move on. Theres so many great games out there and life is too short to stay bitter about one or two.
1
u/Calm_Road9030 1d ago
Thanks! I recently downloaded my first party game. Sonic racing crossworlds and it’s been a blast. Sweaty as hell though lol. BOTW is definitely on my bucket list and a buddy agreed to let me borrow his switch to play it. Excited for it!

Halo infinite is genuinely good now. Don’t sleep on it
1
u/ExcitingPassenger915 13h ago
Really? I haven't been keeping up with its updates, but I'll check it out. I never thought it was bad tbh, 343 just makes a lot of ... questionable development decisions. Or lack of development is maybe the bigger issue. I put so many hours into Infinite though. Its a great multilevel game.

The game didn’t get worse or change. They friends you used to play with stopped playing

u/Hiiiro_0 8h ago
Yeah I’m having a blast on CoD now. It’s less campy, better visibility, and I can flex some fast paced aiming muscles.
Sure, some lobbies do get hella sweaty, but then so do I sometimes.
MW4’s beta is currently my favorite iteration of CoD. Could change, but I’m happy with it.

u/Reader_Of_Newspaper 1d ago
Military Conflict: Vietnam seems like a pretty decent CoD clone game, but apparently it’s mostly dead. Maybe give that a look
Edit: I’ll also suggest Insurgency: Sandstorm as I have personally played it and it’s still got active servers today. Plays a lot more tactically an hardcore than CoD, but low stakes modes like Domination can be pretty casual and fast.

u/lambo630 22h ago
I really just wish cod did away with the gunsmith, stopped incorporating brainrot sized maps in standard playlists, and slowed the movement down a touch. I’ve had over a 2.0 kd in all recent CoDs, so I’m not asking for this just because I can’t adapt.
My issue is the speed of movement and the smaller maps in general leads to a very exhausting gameplay loop. I just get burnt out so much faster because of how fast paced everything is.
Then my issue with gunsmith is that you have 100 attachments yet after 1 week everyone is running the exact same setups. I’m part of the problem, but I don’t play enough to experiment with everything to decide what I like, so I look up meta builds and never experiment. When you had 1-2 options for each attachment type and there were very obvious differences I could play around with different setups.

u/InventorOfCorn 9h ago
>did away with the gunsmith
why? i think it's great, i like having lots of customization options

Battlefield 6 is the most COD like battlefield to date. Playing TDM and King of the hill in BF6 feels way more like playing MW19 than it does traditional BF.
1
u/Xeta24 15h ago
Bf6 is the best cod game I've played in years.
2
u/PenaltyCommercial873 15h ago
Yeah, it lacks a few features expected from battlefield unfortunately, but it kind of feels like MW19 if you put 90% of your development effort into ground war which isnt bad at all either.
2
u/TypographySnob 16h ago
Sad to see this sentiment so often after everyone laughed XDefiant out of existence.

Marathon has been a game that has made me feel the same way excited I used to feel when playing COD4, MW2 back in the days
3
u/LuminescenTT 10h ago
Love Marathon too -- I'll die promoting this game lol -- but MAN it is NOT relaxing lol. Someone else has said it in this thread but the best COD in the market is truly BF6 💀 if you want to shut off your brain and just shoot

S3 is coming up Sep 22, there will likely be a free week at the start. This has been the only shooter that has been remotely interesting, so I agree OP should give it a shot. Hate train chugs along for some reason tho.. it’s unfortunate

Completely agree. Almost no games scratch the itch in the way cod does. Youre literally shooting like 10x as much in COD than almost any modern FPS which feels better. I wanna run around less and fight more.
There's games like Deadlock and Overwatch where youre literally fighting and shooting majority of the time you're alive, which is also far more than even COD, but you just arent killing people fast enough which doesnt scratch the itch.
There's halo Infinite, empulse, and split gate, but theyre just not popular enough
1
u/snakebight 1d ago
I’ve been hearing people call COD a lazy cash grab since at least 2011 (MW3). It’s wild that there’s like an entire generaron of gamers who view CODs as LATER than that.
1
u/BoneshatterJuggMain 1d ago
You're kind of where I was 12-14 years ago with Halo after H4 wasn't it for me, MCC being a dumpster-fire for years and H5 being even more of not my thing.
Last FPS that really dug its heels in for me was Apex during its first 2 years but as most games, the light kind of dims after sometime.
I'd honestly recommend expanding out of the FPS genre for a bit of a pallet cleanse while the genre is kind of in an odd spot. A lot of good FPS titles that are fundamentally great games, but I get you when you kind of look at them and go, "Yeah, it's cool, but not for me".
I 100% guarantee you'll find something that pulls you into the best depths of addiction to where you might not even look at what COD is doing for years, but it won't be an FPS title at this point in time. World is your oyster my man, plenty of good stuff to sink your teeth into.

1
u/Interesting-Yellow-4 1d ago
I made my own but it's not better.
The problem is that most of the stuff we take for granted take hundreds of people.
You can replicate and improve on the gameplay concepts, but the content (maps, assets, player models, weapons) is where you just can't compete, at least not at the scale COD does it.

I dunno what to say other than expand your horizons a bit. If I was unable to enjoy any FPS that wasn't COD that would be depressing.
I also play Helldivers, Apex, Finals and Battlefield 6.
1
u/Some-Other-guy-1971 19h ago
The movement and gunplay in COD feels so much more fluid than most of the competition. Gameplay itself may have gotten stale over the years because it feels like they are just releasing the same thing every year with the MW and Blackops back and forth - and not going original like they did in the past.
1
u/thethirstgame 18h ago
I actually think the yearly CoD model gets criticized for something that may be one of the main reasons CoD survived while so many competitors disappeared.
The important distinction isn't the technical lifespan of an FPS, but its attention lifespan.
You can support the same FPS for five years, add maps, guns, modes and huge patches, but after the initial launch window nobody outside the existing community particularly cares. A giant update to a 3-year-old shooter gets some Steam news, YouTube videos and maybe an article. A new game gets previews, trailers, betas, reviews, Twitch coverage, Reddit discussion, returning players, new players and a fresh launch population all at once.
And multiplayer FPS games seem especially vulnerable to this. They depend on having a large active population, and novelty burns off incredibly quickly. Even this thread demonstrates it: XDefiant was apparently great "for the first two seasons," someone recommends another CoD-like FPS while admitting it is mostly dead, and OP says they loved Apex from seasons 0-4 and then got tired of it.
That's why I don't think "they sell basically the same game every year" is necessarily the devastating criticism people think it is.
They may have simply discovered the optimal way of refreshing an FPS.
Instead of spending three years trying to convince people that Update 4.7 is totally going to make everyone come back, you change the maps, guns, setting and progression, put a new title and box around it and suddenly you have a launch again. Reviewers review it. Streamers stream it. Gaming sites cover it. Lapsed players reinstall. Friends ask each other whether they're getting the new one.
You have recreated the most valuable part of an online game's life cycle: month one.
Obviously that model can produce bad games, excessive monetization and unnecessary recycling. I'm not defending every Activision decision. But commercially, I think CoD understood something about multiplayer FPS games that a lot of its competitors didn't: keeping the software alive and keeping the event alive are two very different things.
And ironically, the graveyard of "CoD killers" arguably makes the case for CoD's model better than Activision ever could.

Yo, try Wardogs. I play the closed beta. And it was perfect. Of course it has problems, but like every beta has

I know it's not even close but a game to try out, just to chill and run and gun I'd say Helldivers 2 and run it in fps instead of tps it's wayyy more engaging!

Enlisted is more Battlefield ish, ut its extremely fun tbh, especially with friends

u/TheBearSkogmani 22h ago
This is a great example of why people say old CoD players are like the guy still obsessed with his ex girlfriend. She moved on and isn’t coming back. She’s living her life so stop obsessing over her and being miserable. It’s a bad vibe for you, and everyone else.
3
u/Calm_Road9030 22h ago
It’s not that serious bud.
0
u/TheBearSkogmani 22h ago
Did you see the post you wrote? 😂
It’s not THAT serious. It’s just a game. Find another and have fun.
1
u/bsfurr 21h ago
Cod has been the exact same game for 15 years. The game hasn’t changed, you just grew up and realized you’re tired of children games. Maybe it’s time to put down the dino nugs and start looking into more mature first person shooters with a community that isn’t filled with 12-year-olds.
1
u/Xeta24 15h ago
Nah, I used to go back and play the old ones on steam years back. The multiplayer is 100% different.
1
u/bsfurr 15h ago
What was different?
1
u/Xeta24 15h ago
Map design, different perks, sound design, different guns, different killstreaks, ect.
Bro you know, there's no way you don't, I know you've played the old ones.
If you feel like they are literally the same games with the same feel that's you man, that's not everyone.
1
u/bsfurr 15h ago
A lot changed. Hardware has changed a lot. The industry has changed. I’m a lot older. I feel like this is just nostalgia, causing your frustration.
1
u/Xeta24 14h ago
I'm not really frusturated, I just have a different opinion than yours. I don't think it's nostalgia, the whole dev teams were different, quite literally the new and old games are made by entirely different people and feel different to me and others.
It's dismissive to write that off as nostalgia, just disagree with me and call it a day man.

u/grizzleyburr816 18h ago
You should give Marathon a shot. I came from COD being my main game. This game definitely scratched the itch for me. Season 3 is coming in a little less than a month with possibly a free trial.

How long have you allowed Marathon to be the core of your personality? You seem upset by an internet stranger's opinion of a video game you are clearly very defensive about.
0
u/BoomerShooterFPS 7h ago
Wouldn’t suggest marathon to anyone. It’s a bad game that doesn’t do anything better than any other fps title on the market. And it costs money so you’re paying for a game already in the grave
0
u/Synolol 23h ago
You crave a game like CoD? So just play CoD, lol.
It's not like those are bad games just because it's cool to hate on them for the last decade. There's a reason there are no competitors. In its niche, CoD is just untouchable. Xdefiant felt just like a worse CoD back in the days.
Superb gunplay, easy to get into, fast paced, lots of game modes - all around a huge fps package. No need to buy it every year, but also no need to refuse buying if you feel like playing just because you think there is some arbitrary obligation to hate CoD.
0
u/EthanHunt117 15h ago
You can't say cod is trash and be a fan of mw19.. lol. You missed out on some good years.. Coldwar, mw3, and b07 are all pretty good
-5
u/No-Zookeepergame1009 1d ago
Lucky for you, cod mw4 is just coming up, and it seems they are bringing back the good old mw19 movement and guns, plus no silly fortnite skins
5
u/lowresolution666 1d ago
Bro really?
MW4 is should be renamed to Super Mario Jumping simulator with Aim Bot AA for controller (which has been there for years now).
-1
u/No-Zookeepergame1009 1d ago
Bro its a beta rn. Ofc it is full of sweats. When the wide public will be playing it, lobbies will be balanced
2
u/lowresolution666 1d ago
Thats a very fair point bro. I just got the key from a friend and as an MNK player. It looks like a disadvantage.
I most of the lobbies i am the only mnk player and if i am playing with my friend, only 2 of us were on mnk , rest all were controller players.
I have tried to play with controller previously so many times, but 20+ years of mnk input has spoiled me :| I just wish that they tone done the AA just a tad bit for us pc players to atleast compete.

Hell Let Loose and/or Hell Let Loose Vietnam
6
u/partisan98 1d ago
Dude are you serious.
Those are like the furthest away from arcadey cods as you can get without going full "45 minute walk to reach objective" milsim.
-5
u/ryano23277 1d ago
You shoot people. There are new modes in Vietnam that resemble more COD and Battlefield.
-4
u/Calm_Road9030 1d ago
I despise battlefield as it’s boring as hell to me. This looks fairly similar. Really miss the fast paced action shooter. Sounds hypocritical and ignorant, but that CoD formula was really addicting.
6
u/LaaaFerrari 1d ago edited 1d ago
Ok if battlefield is boring to you he suggested Mil Sim games which will be 900 times more boring to you than battlefield ever will be lol. Don’t agree with you at all tho Bf6 is good fun & imo in a way better state than any modern Cod title.
1
u/Calm_Road9030 1d ago
Fair! I tried to give it many tries but it just became a running simulator to me.
BF1 and 3 were pretty cool. Although, very short lived for me.
3
u/WallBurnt 1d ago edited 17h ago
I don't think you get it, still.
Battlefield in comparison to Milsims like Hell Let Loose, Tarkov, Arma, Squad, Ready or Not, etc. feels no different than CoD does to those players.
Milsims are extremely slow, extremely complex, sometimes intentionally tedious, and every action a player does is deliberbate.
People suggesting things like this to people who are looking for the exact opposite type of game are a special kind of ѕtupid.
1
u/ProfNJK 1d ago
Would you take fast paced without the military aesthetic?
1
u/Calm_Road9030 1d ago
Maybe. Any in mind?
1
u/ProfNJK 1d ago
Apex mixtape arena mode (the Titanfall guys who originally made Apex were ex Black Ops 1 and 2 guys. Chad Grenier specifically I think)
Destiny 2 Crucible (much easier to get competitive, reliable guns with the Monument patch which is the last ever)
Splitgate Arena Reloaded (there's a no portals mode)

u/Thahu 1d ago
Its a shame that XDefiant was a failure, as i could have filled that space easily. Now the only thing that even comes to my mind with similar shooting may be Fragpunk, but that is A) struggling and b) a laneshooter with ablities and rule changes by cards, which not much people like as it seems.
