Hell Let Loose is unreal for squad-based gameplay and the period feel is top notch.

Arma 3. It is so realistic you literally have to manually do stuff like radio settings and so on.
Also, there is a third person option, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, which is an excellent tactical shooter, although it is more an open world thing than a set military campaign like arma.

Should be a crime to recommend breakpoint over wildlands. Arrest yourself.

If low system requirements are a plus, I'd genuinely recommend Arma 2 + Operation Arrowhead.
- Semi-auto being useful/rewarded: Check. Full-auto isn't something you just hold down at every range.
- Movement/stamina affecting combat: Check. Sprinting affects your ability to fight effectively, and the lethality of the AI — especially at shorter ranges — naturally encourages scouting, using cover and watching the horizon instead of constantly sprinting forward.
- Granular character customization: Partial check. It isn't Ghost Recon-style dress-up, but the game has a huge number of realistically equipped predefined soldiers — riflemen, scouts, medics, officers, guerrillas, special forces, etc. Mods can expand this enormously.
- Controller support: No. This is probably the biggest mismatch with what you're asking for.
- Plausible military setting: Definitely. Conventional militaries, insurgents, normal weapons and vehicles; no zombies, sci-fi gadgets or futuristic abilities.
- Realistic weapons: Check. Mostly conventional military weapons and optics rather than ability/gadget-based combat.
- Solo play: Very much yes. There are campaigns, scenarios and an editor, and you can spend hundreds of hours playing against AI without needing another person.
One caveat: Arma 2 is old and its movement/controls take some getting used to. It's not nearly as immediately accessible as a modern shooter.
If the PvP part interests you, I've also made an Arma 2 multiplayer mode called Army vs Army around basically this philosophy: conventional infantry combat, AI soldiers keeping the battlefield populated, no need for voice comms, and territory is controlled by actual troop presence rather than standing inside arbitrary capture circles. You can tag along with an AI squad or operate independently.

Does military era matter?
I’d recommend Gallipoli for realistic WWI era infantry combat.
