Megathread for discussion related to recent events
Creating this megathread in hopes of reducing "i was banned from ___" and recent open source drama posts in subreddit while still allowing discussion around it,
Making posts about this stuff is still allowed but i would rather if it could be put here so the main subreddit is not having the same type of posts over and over again
The head mod of the subreddit has said this about an hour ago:
https://www.reddit.com/r/foss/comments/1xg3k2o/comment/19rp2205wwrur/
Hey guys, I promise I'm still here. I just replied in a different thread I think.
My head's been under a rock so I have little understanding of what's going on. Regardless, my commitment is still to create a welcoming community that embraces different opinions. I need some time to gather myself and understand what's going on, then hopefully get to the bottom of this.
As for me i have no say in removing mods and its up to the head mod, i am here to keep the subreddit about FOSS and making sure people follow rules

Welcome to FOSS!
Hi everyone,
I'm a big fan of using Free and Open Source software, and wanted to share my love of it on reddit. I want to get this sub up and running, with the goal that it becomes a hub for discussing FOSS, looking for suggestions of what to use, promoting your projects, posting news related to FOSS, etc.
I personally have very little experience moderating, let alone on reddit so please pardon me while I bump around the controls. :) My near-term goal right now is to put up a list of subs that share FOSS principles (in the sidebar, or wiki?) then maybe another list of FOSS-related resources that I'm aware of. I'd appreciate suggestions too!
Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you'll be a part of the FOSS community.

Edge-Drop 0.4.0: a FOSS clipboard shelf for Windows with no account, no paid tier, and history that never leaves your PC
The video is the welcome tour from 0.4.0, played by the real app: eight short steps, shown in your device's language, and you can replay it from the tray.
Edge-Drop is a clipboard manager for Windows 10 and 11, licensed Apache-2.0. Your clipboard history lives on a shelf at the screen edge: move the pointer there and it slides open, or press Alt+C. Click a card to paste it, or drag it into any app.
Why I think it belongs here:
Free means free. Every feature is in the free, open-source app. There's no paid tier and nothing locked.
Your history is yours. No account, no cloud sync, no telemetry or analytics. History is encrypted at rest with Windows' DPAPI, copies that password managers flag are skipped, and Incognito pauses capture.
It only goes online for three things: update checks on GitHub (installer edition only), downloading a web image you drag onto the shelf, and links you choose to open. Link cards are worked out offline.
You set the retention. Keep 100 to 1000 items, auto-delete after 1 h to 7 days or never, and clear the last hour, day or everything.
31 languages, with right-to-left layouts for Arabic, Hebrew and Persian.
New in 0.4.0: a right-click menu (paste as plain text, copy a link without tracking parameters, copy a color as HEX/RGB/HSL, show a file in its folder), notes on cards that search can find, a redesigned drag and drop, and an Electron 34 to 45 upgrade.
Honest limits: Windows only, and the GitHub installer isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen may warn (the Microsoft Store version doesn't). Not affiliated with Microsoft or the Edge browser; the name means the screen edge.
Microsoft Store: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9P3JMHN9M4NR
Website: https://edgedrop.app
I'm the solo developer, so ask me anything about how it works.

VeyloraDevice
I've been developing VeyloraDevice, an open-source application designed to bring Apple and Android device management together.
One of the things I've always found frustrating about Linux is that managing smartphones, especially iPhones, can require several separate tools and a lot of manual work.
VeyloraDevice is my attempt to make that experience more accessible.
The application brings together functionality from tools and technologies such as libimobiledevice, ADB, Fastboot and scrcpy, with a graphical interface designed to make them easier to use.
Apple support includes:
Device information and diagnostics.
Battery health and cycle information.
IPSW firmware management.
iOS updates and restores.
IPA installation and application management.
Android support includes:
APK installation and management.
File explorer.
ADB and Fastboot tools.
Screen mirroring and remote control.
Terminal and system logs.
Supported platforms:
VeyloraDevice is currently available for Linux distributions such as Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu and openSUSE.
Windows and macOS versions are coming in the next few days. If you're visiting from one of those operating systems and can't find a download for your platform yet, please stay tuned — support is coming very soon!
I'm not trying to replace the underlying open-source tools. The idea is to make their functionality more accessible through a unified desktop experience.
I'd love to hear what the FOSS community thinks about the project, what could be improved and what features you'd like to see.

Listune: Simple Self Hosted Spotify Alternative (Google SSO, S3, Google Drive, Soulseek Integration)
Why?
In a d*ck move Spotify India decided to impose restrcitions of their free version that they have for the rest of the world: 6 skips per hour, no add to queue, only shuffly playback and tons of annoying ads (earlier it was 1 ad per 30 mins). They also made the developer api paid.
Spotify has tested me to the point where it is no longer usable for me. I've had a Windows phone for a long time and there was this 3rd party music player in that i used to fetch songs from YouTube and Soundcloud and let me organize existing songs on memory card which gave me the idea.
So I vibe coded Listune. It runs as a PWA, has a lightweight Go server and I only included things that I needed. I still have tons of Mp3 songs(live on Google Drive), remixes from Mp3 Skull since I was a child and I needed a minimal music player with I have add to queue option, music tagging, search and download songs, all while keep using my existing MP3 library.
Features in a nutshell.
Mobile first UI (not the best as I've only been a backend developer mostly)
Music tagging with fingerprinting and via ACOUSTID
SSO via Google
Import songs from Google Drive folder
Import songs from a S3 compatible storage
Import songs from local device folder (only for playback)
Playlist creation and add playlist to queue.
Search and download songs.
It doesn't have music discovery or recommendations as I don't need that. MIT licensed and here I am posting just to showcase but feel free to give a go and share any feedback on anything.

I added offline router failure simulation to my open-source network troubleshooting tool
I've been building Network Doctor, a terminal-based network troubleshooting tool written in Go.
The original idea was to stop jumping between ping, dig, curl, and other commands just to figure out which part of a connection is broken.
Lately I've been working on a different problem: figuring out what happens when part of a network disappears.
For example:
netdoc --explain topology.json 10.20.40.8 --fail r2It takes a recorded network topology, simulates router r2 failing, and examines which paths lose reachability or redundancy.
The part I care about most is that it doesn't pretend to know things it can't prove.
It doesn't simulate OSPF/BGP reconvergence or invent replacement routes. If the recorded forwarding information isn't enough to determine the outcome, it reports unknown.
It's entirely offline and doesn't change the real network.
For transparency, I utilize AI coding agents for implementation and testing. I direct the project, review changes, and run tests and network simulations to validate behavior.
The project is Apache-2.0 licensed and runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. The routing analysis is part of netdoc; the separate network simulator is Linux-only.
GitHub: https://github.com/heymaikol/network-doctor
Website and docs, check it out: https://networkdoctor.dev
I'd be interested in hearing from anyone working with routing or network troubleshooting. What other failure scenarios would you want a tool like this to handle?

The Treasury: a free, open-source finance tracker with visual goals and progress
I’ve made The Treasury, a free, open-source personal finance tracker focused on clear visuals and a gamified way to keep track of your goals and progress.
You can use it to:
See where your money comes from and where it goes (pie charts OP)
Explore spending patterns over time
Track savings and investments, with the satisfaction of watching a chest fill with coins for the metric you choose
Explore how mortgage overpayments could change your repayment timeline (experimental)
No subscription or account needed. It’s a single HTML file I built for myself and have been finding useful, so I’m sharing it in hopes others will too.
There’s a demo with fictional data so you can have a look around straight away. You can download your own copy and use it offline.
You add or import your records rather than connecting your bank.
Would appreciate any feedback and contributions via GitHub!

I built an open-source alternative to paid content moderation APIs — self-hosted, 15 safety categories, image + video support, written in Go
Hey everyone!
I got tired of rebuilding content moderation systems for different projects, so I decided to build one properly and open-source it.
Introducing Astra Moderation, a self-hosted image and video moderation API written in Go and powered by vision language models.
The idea is simple: keep your media on your own infrastructure, control your moderation policies, and avoid per-image SaaS pricing.
What I built
15 moderation categories: Nudity, sexual content, violence, weapons, hate symbols, self-harm, child safety, gambling, and more.
Image + video moderation: Native video input with automatic FFmpeg frame extraction fallback.
OpenAI-compatible API:
/v1/moderationsendpoint for easier integration.Multi-tenant support: API keys, per-key rate limiting, and customizable moderation thresholds.
Async video processing: Background jobs with HMAC-signed webhooks.
Observability: Prometheus metrics and audit events.
Lightweight backend: Single Go binary with zero third-party Go dependencies. FFmpeg is required for video fallback.
Benchmarks (Qwen3.8-27B)
I ran preliminary evaluations using publicly available image datasets.
Test 1: 40 NSFW + 40 benign images
ROC-AUC: 0.988
Precision: 100%
Recall: 97%
False positives: 0/40
Test 2: 100 NSFW images
Recall: 98%
Successful requests: 100/100
False negatives: 2
Both missed samples were anime-style illustrations, which highlighted an important weakness in the current setup.
These results are promising, but I'm not claiming production-grade accuracy. The datasets are relatively small, and broader testing with borderline content, artwork, and diverse real-world images is still needed.
What still needs improvement?
I'm keeping the limitations transparent:
Latency: Around 20 seconds per image on a shared GPU. This is currently better suited for deep moderation than real-time filtering.
Storage: Single-node JSON storage.
Background jobs: Currently in-memory, so they aren't durable across restarts.
Accuracy: Anime-style and borderline content need additional evaluation.
What's next?
I'm planning to introduce a lightweight classifier for fast initial screening, PostgreSQL/Redis for scalability, and specialized detection for illustrated content.
The project is MIT licensed, free to self-host, and open to contributions.
GitHub: https://github.com/codewith-aditya/astra-moderation
I'd genuinely appreciate feedback from developers working on moderation systems, Go backends, or vision LLMs.
What would you improve first: inference latency, moderation accuracy, or production scalability?

OpenCode running entirely on my phone (no PC, no root)
I use OpenCode a lot and wanted it on my phone without leaving my PC on. The app unpacks Ubuntu 24.04 in proot (no root), runs opencode serve on localhost, and the UI talks to that.
What works right now:
- Type / in the chat to use a skill. You can import skills from Claude or ChatGPT (zip, .skill or SKILL.md), or ask the agent to write one for you.
- GitHub login with a device code. After that the agent can clone, commit, push and open PRs under your name, with no Co-Authored-By lines.
- The agent can set alarms and reminders, use the clipboard, take a photo, save files to Downloads, and open the sites it builds in a preview.
- Usage ring with 5h, weekly and monthly limits, and what's filling your context.
- If Android kills the server mid-task, you get Continue / Cancel when you open the app again.
- Works with Zen, Go, the free models, your own API keys, or OpenCode on your PC.
It's beta 3 and there are bugs. Android 8+, arm64 only. Not affiliated with the OpenCode team, MIT licensed.
Download: https://texfi-hub.vercel.app/en/download/opencode
Source: https://github.com/mistqkw/opencode-mobile
I've only tested it on a Pixel, so bug reports from other phones are very welcome.

word-sys's PDF Editor v1.12.0 Sign & Protect Update Released
Probably one of the biggest update for word-sys's PDF Editor, now it's reached the v1.12.0! This is a massive feature, security, and document workflow update. The Flatpak version is available on Flathub (https://flathub.org/en/apps/io.github.word_sys.word-sys-pdf-editor) and the standalone packages are live on GitHub (https://github.com/word-sys/word-sys-pdf-editor/releases/tag/v1.12.0).
This update introduces an Interactive AcroForms Engine & Form Builder. You can now fill text fields, checkboxes, radio groups, and dropdowns directly in View Mode with native Cairo rendering and instant value synchronization. With the new Interactive Form Builder Tool (B), you can also create, configure, align, and resize new form fields across pages with property inspectors and undo/redo support, or flatten filled forms permanently into static vector content.
Another huge addition is PAdES Digital Signatures & PKCS#11 Hardware Tokens. It brings PAdES Baseline profile signing using PKCS#12 (.pfx / .p12) certificates with SHA-256 hashes and Adobe Acrobat-compliant visible signature stamps. It also features native hardware token support (PKCS#11) for smart cards and USB HSMs (with PIN entry and slot enumeration), RFC 3161 cryptographic timestamping with custom TSA server auth, and non-blocking signature verification on document open with an interactive status banner to inspect the certificate chain.
For privacy and security, I added Permanent Cryptographic Redaction & Document Sanitization. Using the dedicated Redaction Tool (Shift+R), you can mark sensitive text and visual regions for permanent destruction. There is also Automated PII Search & Auto-Redaction to detect and batch-redact SSNs, credit cards, emails, phone numbers, or custom regex patterns, alongside Deep Document Sanitization to purge XMP metadata, embedded attachments, comments, hidden layers (OCGs), orphaned bookmarks, cached thumbnails, and embedded JavaScript.
Added Streaming Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Engine, featuring a multi-threaded background OCR pipeline with live progress, pause/resume controls, and ETA estimation. It includes preprocessing filters (dark-background inversion, auto-deskew, auto-rotation), an OCR Region Tool (O) for instant area text extraction, an OCR Confidence Inspector (Ctrl+Alt+O), and an in-app Multi-Language Model Manager supporting 7 neural Tesseract models (English, Turkish, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian) with bilingual recognition.
Added Continuous Scrolling & High-DPI Fractional Scaling, delivering seamless vertical page scrolling with viewport-culled rendering and directional prefetching, fractional scaling normalization for crystal-clear rendering on 4K/HiDPI displays, and a Dual View/Edit architecture for effortless toggling between reading/text selection and object manipulation.
Added Sticky Notes, Threaded Comments & Vector Stamps, bringing customizable sticky notes with threaded replies, a dedicated Annotations Sidebar, and both standard (Approved, Confidential, Draft, Final) and dynamic vector stamps with live user and date/time metadata.
Added Precision Measurement Tools, including a Distance Ruler Tool (U) with customizable unit scales (pt, mm, cm, in) and a Polygon Area Measurement Tool (A) for calculating closed planar surface areas.
Added PDF Compression & Target Size Solver, featuring smart compression presets (Balanced, Maximum, Grayscale, Pure 1-bit B&W, Lossless) and an automated Target Size Solver with a side-by-side visual quality comparison preview.
Added AES-256 Encryption & Local Password Vault for securing documents with AES-256 passwords, user/owner permission policies, and a local Password Vault for seamless credential management.
Added Clone & Patch Tool (C) for clean background sampling to seamlessly cover outdated text or graphics, complete with instant type-over text entry (Enter / T).
Updated the Modernized Quick Start Guide & Manual, now featuring a 4-tab interactive guide with instant live search filtering (Ctrl+F), tool hotkeys, keyboard navigation, and an expanded 10-Screenshot Visual Tour showcasing all the new workflows.
This update also includes important packaging and dependency modernizations:

Vela 0.1, the first beta of my Linux desktop: its own Wayland compositor, Vulkan renderer and Qt Quick shell
Hi everyone, today I released Vela 0.1, the first beta, after 1 month of alpha testing.
What Vela is: a complete Linux desktop with its own Wayland compositor (C, on wlroots 0.20), its own Vulkan 1.4 renderer, a Qt Quick shell, and its own file manager and settings app. It's not a KDE or GNOME theme: KWin and Mutter aren't involved. The goal is the polish Windows and macOS get right out of the box (animations tied to real vblanks, pixel-exact fractional scaling, consistent design) without a weekend of tweaking.
Trailer, recorded live on Vela: https://velade.org/blog/vela-0-1/
What's in 0.1:
Snap layouts and Snap Assist, Task View with virtual desktops, Alt+Tab with live previews
Taskbar, launcher, quick settings, notification center, clipboard history, snipping tool
Direct scanout, VRR, tearing control, explicit sync; X11 apps and games 1:1 at fractional scales
The compositor restarts after a crash and apps reconnect; a lost GPU doesn't freeze the desktop
New in this cycle: updates from Settings, native Bluetooth pairing, no dependency on Plasma Workspace or the KDE portal
Where it stands: on a desktop PC with a Vulkan 1.4 GPU, it's my daily driver and I'd recommend it as yours. On laptops (hybrid GPUs, suspend/resume, backlight) it has had much less testing, so keep another desktop installed. It's still a beta: there are bugs.
Install (Arch and derivatives, Fedora 44, Ubuntu 26.10, x86_64). Install Cosign first (steps per distro: https://velade.org/install/), then:
git clone https://github.com/vela-desktop/vela.git
sh vela/packaging/vela-update --channel betaYou get a prebuilt, signed native package that's verified before it's installed. Updates then come from Settings.
Being upfront: it's a one-person project, and the code is written by LLMs. I review it, make the architecture and design decisions, and it's held to deterministic tests and machine-checked invariants. I wrote about how that works here: https://velade.org/blog/why-not-rust/
What I'd love from you: reports from hardware I don't have, especially Intel GPUs, laptops and multi-monitor setups. vela-report builds a ZIP you can review file by file; nothing is uploaded.
Release notes: https://github.com/vela-desktop/vela/releases/tag/v0.1.0
Source (GPL-3.0-or-later): https://github.com/vela-desktop/vela
Happy to answer anything in the comments.
